I would make it a passive, as it is meant not to belong to any specific element. Right now too encouraging of :aether.

Seems like a nasty combo with Mitosis as long as you have the pillars to maintain it.
Does Adrenaline drain one more quanta for each strike?

At what turn should both Mercenary and a Theoretical balanced comparable vanilla creature be equal?

Theoretically a creature with X|X+1 attack and hp of 1-5 would cost X-1 elemental quanta + 1 card.
This card costs 1 mark quanta per turn after the first attack + 1 :rainbow + 1 card.
1 :rainbow (~0 :aether) is small enough to not include in the following comparison.
Mercenary costs 1 cost unit per turn (T)
A Theoretical creature with X attack costs X cost units.
The theoretical creature catches the Mercenary when X=T or on turn 4|4 in this case.

PS: Mercenary should be passive. Lobotomy is not Mind Control.

I assume it'll probably be like devourer, one quanta drained for every two attacks or something like that, though, I don't think many people would want to put adrenaline on this card.

I created this card with the idea of a elementless creature that any deck (like monos) can use for a quick sudden damage dealer. The payment the mercenary squad demands basically disables one of your pillars, so when you use this card, you'll get a good head start, but eventually, the quanta draining will catch up to you. I made both versions have a cost of 1  :rainbow, so fractalling it wouldn't be that powerful.

Still not sure about whether it's ability should be active or passive though.

Right, which is why I kept the ability as active.

I originally planned for this to drain random quanta, but found that to be way too overpowered when coupled with nova and immolation. Now, it drains your mark's quanta, making it an other card that's more useful in monos and duos than actual rainbows, although perhaps an immobow could also use Mercenaries quite effectively.
