acids and bases have to deal with the pH of a solution on a scale from 1-14 (7 being neutral, approximately the pH of H2O), a low pH (under 7) is acidic, very low pHs are strongly acidic (closer to 1 than 7). bases have high pHs (over 7), strong bases have very high pHs (closer to 14 than 7) - this is all assuming i can still remember my chemistry from highschool and college.
