C-C-C-Combo Maker!
Objective:-Design a card with a randomly assigned partner that has a fun combo/mechanic with two chosen in-game cards!
Rules:- There are three major parts of this competition: Sign-ups, Design, and Inverted Voting.
- SIGN-UPS
- For this competition, all members must sign up on this topic first. In order to sign up, players must simply post in this topic with a statement expressing desire to join.
- Contestants must also send a personal message to Kuroaitou, the host of this competition, with TWO cards found in-game. These cards must be of different elements and be of different types
- Examples of CORRECT submissions: (Retrovirus and Chaos Seed) - (Thorn Carapace + Elite Scarab)
- Examples of INCORRECT submissions: (Freeze + Shockwave) - (Acceleration and Elite Armagio)
[li]
If you post the in-game cards in this topic, you will BE DISQUALIFIED if you do not remove and change them to something else upon personally messaging them to me. This is to prevent unfair pairing.[/li]
[li]Sign-ups will last for a maximum of 4 days.[/li][/list]
- DESIGN
- Once the sign-up phase is over, participants are RANDOMLY assigned to another player. (Note that the cards they they've message the competition organizer will not be revealed UNTIL the sign-up phase is over.) These two participants must then design a card that will have a unique mechanic/combo using two of the four ('team') cards they've chosen. This means that the card can be based off an element OR type of one card while improving the mechanic of another to form the 'combo', OR it can be entirely based off the mechanics of both cards.
- You can use either version of the selected card (if 'Chaos Seed' is listed, 'Chaos Power' can also be used for the combo card).
- If one fails however to communicate or assist in the card design process, the other team member must notify the competition organizer immediately, or else both participants may fail to be included in the poll stage.
- During the card design process, if there are an odd number of players, the remaining player will be paired up with (*gasp*) the competition organizer*.
- Designers MUST SUBMIT THEIR CARD SUBMISSIONS HERE: http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,29914.0.html
- Designing will last for ~7 days.
- INVERTED VOTING
- Unlike normal voting, inverted voting will take a new twist on polls; instead of voting for their favorite and most balanced card concepts, participants are instead encouraged to vote for their LEAST favorite card ideas or inappropriate and 'unbalanced' ones. This means that the candidates with the lowest votes are the 'winning' candidates instead.
- All voters get to choose their 5 LEAST favorite card ideas. Voters may remove and change their votes at any time, but will not be able to see the voting scores until the competition is over.
- Teams that have either a) failed to submit any cards (no entry & disqualification), b) failed to submit notes (+2 vote penalty), or c) failed to have both members post (+2 vote penalty) and without notifying the CO of activity issues (+2 vote penalty) will automatically receive certain penalties or votes added to their scores after the polls are over.
- The voting stage should last a total of 3 days, although this phase may be extended for multiple days if tie-breakers are needed.
- If there is a tie for first (i.e. - multiple cards with 0 or fairly few votes), they will enter a regular tie-breaker where users may vote for their top candidate.
CURRENT PHASE: Vote Tiebreaker! And the winner is girlsgeneration and Jenkar for their Sadism | Sadism idea!
Sadism : noun. any enjoyment in being cruel.
Jenkar :
Fire Shield, ThunderstormGirlsGeneration : Graviton Fire Eater,
Unstable GasThankfully, three of our cards were mass creature control, and they gave a rather obvious idea.
Sadism is a card somewhat a mixture between Empathic Bond and Voodoo Doll. If Cloak prevents the creatures from being affected by creature controls,
Sadism encourages it and receive full benefit from the damages inflicted. It is even more useful in the sense that hurting opponent creatures count as well.
Note that the card counts every
instance of damage inflicted, NOT the amount of
damage. A 5-damage Lightning Bolt triggers
Sadism once, just as if a 3-damage Rain of Fire would. Cards such as Gravity Pull or Ice Bolt used on a high HP creature can trigger
Sadism multiple times, obviously.
Also note that killing the creature does NOT trigger
Sadism. We think enjoyment of death (Necrophilia? <_<) is completely distinct from the enjoyment of pain. This also happens to be the main reason why this card is not in Element
.
There are way too many cards that could create synergies with
Sadism, but we will list a few.
*
All mass creature controls. Pretty obvious.
Special mention : Unstable Gas. Hurts your own creatures and doubles the effect.
Special mention 2 : Plague. Damage instance from all opponent creature EVERY TURN?
*
Aflatoxin. Fill opponent's field with cells and boom.
*
Rage Potion, Acceleration, Voodoo Dolls. Sadistic cards by default.

http://thetemplekingbooks.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.htmlThis sword was made to synergize well with both Spark and Flying Weapon. Synergy with both is obvious: Using Zephyrus's ability, you can buff Sparks to keep them alive as they attack your opponent. With Flying Weapon, you can multiple on the field, as well as allowing it to buff itself. It also fits a niche of giving Unupped Wyrm a mono Buff, making able to compete with Pegasus.
We arrived at this card idea after reviewing several mechanics and discussion. After we got our ideas rolling it was fairly easy to pick out a mechanic that works well.
Stats while flying are 4 | 3 and 6 | 3.
--------------------
I must admit that this was one of the more fun comps I've been in just because after thinking about it, and bouncing ideas back and forth, we were able to create a card with an ability that we both agreed with. Without great teamwork, this would've taken waaaay longer than it did.
Original Art:
http://www.sxc.hu/photo/980370We probably have the most redundant card choices ever (Gravity Pull + Armagio
), but our second choices of cards (Mind Flayer + Fog Shield) made for an interesting brainstorm -- pun possibly intended. What if the Flayer's lobotomy made its victims easier to control? We played around with the idea until we hit something interesting and thematic: giving a miss chance to creatures without active abilities (essentially anything that can appear underneath a creature's card when in play).
Psionic Shield is designed to synergize well with Mind Flayer, while giving a balance adjustment to miss-chance shields like Fog. The higher cost and a need for a two card combo (with either Flayer or Lobo) to work justify its 50% miss chance, while also being a counter to straightforward rushes like mono-Life. The spell reflection is a thematic add-on, as the Psionic Shield is based on the powers of the mind -- telekinesis and the redirection of spells can be one of those applications.
Durahan is meant to work well with Butterfly Effect and Skull Buckler. Butterfly Effect and Skull Buckler can give the small push Durahan needs to produce a huge chain of death effects and clear the board of annoying creatures.
Durahan can also support Butterfly Effect and Skull Buckler in return. Poisoned creatures will gradually lose HP, increasing the chance to turn into skeletons by Skull Buckler. With 0 attack, Durahan can even be used as a vessel for Butterfly Effect.
Our discussion started roughly one hour after teams were assigned. It went well.

and atlast. we made it! greatwork with you TuckingFypo
Original Art :
http://www.sxc.hu/photo/989644This card is a clear synergy between Arctic Squid & Acceleration because it allows you to heal creatures while they are frozen as well as a provide a counter to shields like Fire Shield and Permafrost, while doubling as a source of Creature Control on it's own.
Overall, working as a team and balancing the card was easy.
This is a good synergy with Nova and Fahrenheit because Nova can net you quanta, while using this card with Fahrenheit in play to deal great damage. Rounds down.
Example: you have 4 of each quanta. Using this card, you get (44/4=11) 11
quanta and 0 of all other 11 elements quanta unupped. upped you get (44/3=14,666) 14
quanta and 0 of all other 11 elements quanta.
Teamwork did good. Both of us did a splendid job.
-------------
Yup, what playeroa said. Nova/supernova can fuel the card to get more fire quanta, and Fahrenheit obviously loves fire quanta. I'm happy with the teamwork that went on as well.
This card is a clear synergy between Dimensional Shield & Procrastination because it's ability to easily work along side either shield. Very useful for stopping momentumed creatures that render your shield useless or help slow down the growth of creatures trying to overcome the one-turn-attack-one-turn-delayed style of Procrastination.
Teamwork was great. Bounced ideas back and forth until one stuck and we modified it. I whipped up the art, but the majority of the idea came from Majofa.
So this is an obvious combination between Nightmare and Fire Spirit. The catch is that the growth ability itself synergizes with the card, Nightmare, making for an interesting mechanic.
-----------------
This card works similarly to Fire Spirit in that it gains attack power with its skill and has the potential to be deadly after a while, but it can be overcharged with Nightmare. The way it works (unupgraded)
1-3 cards = +1 damage
4-6 cards = +2 damage
7+ cards = +3 damage
Upgraded version:
1/2 cards = +1|-1
3/4 cards = +2|-1
5/6 cards = +3|-1
7/8 cards = +4|-1
Important note for the upgraded version: The card does not actually lose defense, it just takes damage. Its max health does not change, so you can still heal it. Like Rage Potion and Rage Elixir.
The cards this idea came from were Crusader and Minor Vampire. It allows you to have a rareless version of Vadersader. (But that's just one combo!) This gives Crusader the ability to combo with nearly everything (creature-wise; no immaterial for you, Mr. Crusader).
The teamwork went well.
Flying Weapon stats will vary.
-------------
Just a few more notes: Algrator/Logthregor cannot regain Endow by endowing a Crusader. If it endows a Crusader it will not have a skill. When gaining the skill, the activation cost and skill will match the creature's.
EXTRA INFO:Potion of HungerMinor Vampire: A creature that Potion of Hunger can be used on
Dissipation Shield: Gains Entropy so that Dissipation Shield does not get destroyed when you are out of Entropy Quanta
Mutation: You need Entropy to use Mutation. So more Entropy Quanta so you can use a Mutation or 2.
Adrenaline: Goes great with Minor Vampire so the more successfull attacks the more Entropy Quanta.
UPPED CARD:Potion of StarvationMinor Vampire: A creature that Potion of Starvation can be used on
Dissipation Shield: The random quanta could be Entropy Quanta. More Entropy = More Damage Reduction (DR). or More Entropy = More Entropy to use the card.
Mutation: When you use Mutation is turns a creature into a random creature. That random creature could be any element and could use any type of quanta. The more random quanta the better chance you can use that random creatures ability or bring it out if Reverse Timed (RT). Random could get you Entropy. Entropy = Use Mutation.
Adrenaline: Goes with Minor Vampire so the more successfull attacks the more Random Quanta gained
Team Card Pool:
Flooding, Fate Egg, Acceleration, Boneyard
It took us a while to come up with some synergies for that list. And we ended up generating a new card that was more a fusion of Flooding's effect and gravity (Acceleration's element). So we went with a card that is a permanent with psuedo-CC but that fit the flavor of gravity... pulling things down.
It has strong synergies with Wings and also is a soft counter to AirBlitz decks, because right now there aren't many cards that stop AirBlitz Chimera OTKs (even if they aren't super common decks).
Jocko supplied the initial idea and art and I took care of balance tweaks and wording.
Personal notes:
Working as a team was very slow at first as we were both reluctant to take lead of the project, although we both tossed around a couple ideas. Once we figured out that we were both being a little too passive, we both got really active. At that point the teamwork became an enjoyable and easy process that quickly led to a solid result. Thanks Combo for all the support and the great ideas.
--------------------------
Thanks Jocko for speaking up and saving the project!
We had some interesting synergies and tried to go with one that wasn't --too-- specific such that it could be extremely flexible.
The brainstorming for the card went something like this: What happens when there is no air? Vacuum (and Silence).
While Vacuum may be tricky to use it can be very potent.
Works well with Phase Spider and Toadfish, both cards which cost
to use. Keep in mind that Vacuum assesses
quanta quantities as soon as
a turn ends, not when the turn phase is transferred to the enemy and thus allows pillars/pendula/marks to generate
.
Other cards we had in our mix were Parallel Universe and Fog Shield, which we had also brainstormed something for but decided to go with the one that was a little more creative and structured.
Thank you ddevans96 for having made the process so smooth. I enjoyed working with you. ^_^
Card pool: Nightmare, Spark, Blessing, Mindgate
After some deciding and sorting out of the rules, we ended up liking this idea best. The original idea was for it to be 2
/1
and simply have the unupped effect for both versions, but since that would just be a worse version of the current RT/Nightmare (Without the super life drain or, in fact, the Reverse Time) we modded it so that it would be unique. It denies draws on a 2:1 scale, which is powerful, but I feel it would never be used if it were merely 1:1 with no other effect. The obvious synergies are with Mindgate, allowing you to copy your own cards endlessly, and Nightmare, to just stack draw denial on the opponent. It it also of Mindgate's (And Spark's) element and the same type as Blessing.
This card is a clear synergy between Pulverizer and Animate Weapon because the effect can be triggered by both Pulverizer's "shatter" ability and Animate Weapon's effect. We were and still are derping.
Additional Affect: Also while Asleep it drains two quanta per card generated when Nightmare is cast on it. Drains works like the Devourer/pest ability (Convert 2
)
This card can be used on any vanilla creature or paired with Lobotomize skill. With the added affect of quanta siphoning a player can easily recover quanta spent.
