Real life druid sacrifice rituals (if indeed it took place) was meant to be an offering to their gods, and involved innocents when they ran out of criminals. Death seems like more of a neutral force to me, while darkness is aligned with maliciousness and perhaps evil.
Just a note - there have been several heavy debates on what Darkness represents in the game, but the end result has been proved that Darkness =/= Evil. Some users are stingy about this subject, so state with care.
