Since there are currently no advantages to changing a card's element to Aether, this is just a really expensive quint, and that is only the upgraded form.

However, if you also paired this idea with a card that improves Aether cards specifically, this could become a very interesting card.

Assuming every card like this will do the exact same thing of changing the card into the target element, yes.  Of course, elements like Water are already taken care of because of Flooding and others like it.

Actually.. an idea. If this could work for cards in your hand, imagine the synergy with Mindgate. Assuming the cost of the creature also becomes Aether.. it would be pretty neat. Not OP since you can only have 6 of this spell, but really cool.
Or we could come up with a wacky ability.

here is my new idea for 

Grant Aether cost 3 
Creature gains 1  Static Charge: Generate Spark.

Infuse Aether cost 4
Creature gains 3  Electric Charge: Generate Ball Lightning.
