Elements Council - A New Way To Organize the Community https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=11743.msg144376#msg144376
« on: August 22, 2010, 09:48:26 pm »
This is an idea I've had for a while now. We talked about it in the chat, and the more we talked about it, the better it sounded.

Prologue:
Problem I've had with running this forum is that I have to spend ridiculous time doing administrative work like hiring new people, posting announcements, coming up with new stuff, tweaking the forum navigation, making all kinds of minor decisions that anyone could do. What I'd like to do more, is things like come up with new theories, post new decks, write tutorials, etc. because that way I would be a much more productive force in this community. However I don't have much time to do these things because I have to do these administrative things AND also try find time to play the game.

Solution:
Elements Council

Elements council would be a group of well-known and respected Elements players. They would consist of three groups:
1. Staff members
2. Masters
3. Elected Council members (community vote)

Council members would have a secret forum section where they would meet up and make decisions that affect the future of this community.

Examples:
- hiring and firing people
- deciding the "big picture" of forum events
- deciding the "big picture" of .. something else

Promoting new staff members is a perfect example of something where I could use all the help I can get. Contrary to what some believe, I don't care who gets promoted to which job, as long as the job gets done. Council would be perfect for this because we would have multiple people with multiple opinions and views. Although I try to be fair and objective, and I truly think I have been, sometimes it's possible that I make decisions subjectively without even realizing it yourself. With a Council, this wouldn't be a problem.

In theory everyone has the same objective: to make the community run as smoothly as possible. I believe in the Council because it would be very counter-productive for them to make decisions that are bad for the community.

Anyways.. I'll post more details here later. Please post your thoughts and ideas, and lets make this thing work because I know it will awesome and everyone will benefit from it.

Thanks.

Sounds good.

I don't know when this council will be setup but as for my current recommendations again:

Jmdt: Bug Hunter
Icecoldbro: LO > BL
Azumi: LO > CL
Givers: TO #4

looks epic, but shouldn't we add a cap to the Elected Community members column, as that one can get out of hand in comparison the the other ones?
I say this because the masters have a fixed number - 12, and the staff doesn't seem to get too out of hand.
IMO, we should probably have around 5-10 in that case.

Like in the US gov't there should be a small bit of "public" vote. so the council is made up of say 20 members, 1/4 should be public non staff members

Yes, you are right.

I don't know about the numbers yet. Most logical solution would be to have a fixed number. For example:

12 Staff Members
12 Masters
12 Elected Members

36 is a bit high, but it could work.

Yeah...but It'll work with majority vote won't it? Also not everyone will be that active (look at last war and the masters)

I don't know... Personally I think there shouldn't be too many "council" members, since we already have the Masters and Staff members. I think two or three council members are enough.
To be or not to be, I can do both at once. Go learn quantum mechanics, n00b.

I'm not sure what you mean.. What's the alternative to majority vote? Minority vote?

We'll probably let people become candidates.. let them explain why they are best.. set up a poll.. and top-12 get picked.

Something like that.

Staff members are the most important part of the Council so we need a big bunch of them. Masters change all the time and some of them probably don't even care. Elected members change too.

If we wanted to make it smaller, maybe 12, 12 and 6 or something. That would make it an even 30.
