Constantly disconnecting in PVP

Is there some way to check my connection status to the in-game servers? I just lost 3 straight games in a row because I disconnected...usually when I was on the verge of winning.

Or does it happen that when one player disconnects, both players are given a loss?

When one player disconnects that player loses, the other plays the rest of the game with his opponent simulated by an AI.

Switching windows is usually OK.  It is the tab-switch (as timetock mentioned) that causes real problems.

Might depend on your browser, I remember reading somewhere that Chrome treats tabs and windows the same way.

Besides I disconnect often without switching tabs (the only one I have open is elements).

Good to know this issue isn't isolated to me. I've been disconnecting alot recently. I don't use wifi, so this weird.

You are not alone.  I have had an increase in PvP desync -> autolose in the last two weeks.  whenever it happens on my turn, if I hit spacebar to end the turn, no problem.  but if it happens on my opponents turn, it seems there is nothing I can do to remind the server I am there.

My disconnection seems to come in waves... some times the game can run so good for so long then BAM! like 5 in a row...    

I've tested IE, Chrome, and Firefox and so far fire fox has been the most reliable for me... but that could just have luck on it's side.   To bad I didn't stay in college cause I would totally try to help and make this game its own client to help with connection issues.

I don't think the browser matters, I use firefox and I disconnect a lot, and it's the same way--in waves--some times there's times where it doesn't disconnect and its doing good, but other times it disconnects me every single match either in the beginning or halfway, so I can't pvp most of the time.

Also there's times when even if I'm not disconnecting, then I desync and lose that way too, and this also happens in waves, which seem to be occurring more frequently for me. And no, I do not have multiple tabs/windows open when I'm playing.

In the last four days, every single time I played PvP I got disconnected after 7-10 turns and lost the game automatically. I use Internet Explorer, and my connection is for the rest good and stable. This happens regardless of whether I switch tabs, windows, or nothing--and I never switch tabs and only occasionally switch windows. This is pretty annoying given that PvP is the most interesting part of this game.. any way to fix this?

Not at this time.  It's been that way for me for about two weeks, and like everyone else, no problems in other games or internet activities.  It's something on the server end affecting everyone.
