Title: Forum FAQ
Post by: The Oracle on May 11, 2010, 08:18:26 pm
(http://i.imgur.com/lBgHNtZ.png)Question:
Why cannot I choose an avatar?
(http://i.imgur.com/PpP0PUi.png)You need to be a Jr. Member for that, which means you have to have at least 30 posts.

(http://i.imgur.com/lBgHNtZ.png)Question:
Ok, I have 30 posts but I cannot choose my own custom avatar?
(http://i.imgur.com/PpP0PUi.png)Jr. Members can only use predetermined avatars (Elements images). If you want to have your own custom avatar, you need to become a Full Member which is 200+ posts. One other option is to become a forum staff member who can use any avatar regardless of post count.

(http://i.imgur.com/lBgHNtZ.png)Question:
I can't post links on the forum, or my links won't work! Help!
(http://i.imgur.com/PpP0PUi.png)Links won't work for members with less than 5 posts. It's unfortunate, but we've had to do this to combat spambots.

(http://i.imgur.com/lBgHNtZ.png)Question:
What are all the different membergroups and how many posts are required to "level up"?
Newbie:star0
Jr. Member:star :star30
Full Member:star :star :star200
Sr. Member:star :star :star :star500
Hero Member:star :star :star :star :star1000
Legendary Member:star :star :star :star :star :star2000

(http://i.imgur.com/lBgHNtZ.png)Question:
My post disappeared. What happened?
(http://i.imgur.com/PpP0PUi.png)Most likely either your post broke the forum rules (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?action=rules) and it got deleted, or you posted it in the wrong section and it got moved. Posts that get moved usually have a 1-day redirection topic that acts as a link to the new location of your post.

You can also go to your profile and check your post history (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;area=showposts) to try to find the post.

(http://i.imgur.com/lBgHNtZ.png)Question:
How do I change my forum profile settings?
(http://i.imgur.com/PpP0PUi.png)Go the Forum Profile (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;area=forumprofile).

(http://i.imgur.com/lBgHNtZ.png)Question:
Forum time is wrong. How do I change it?
(http://i.imgur.com/PpP0PUi.png)Go to Look and Layout (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;area=theme) and change time offset. You can also tweak other forum settings on this page.

(http://i.imgur.com/lBgHNtZ.png)Question:
How can I find a specific post I'm looking for?
(http://i.imgur.com/PpP0PUi.png)Use Advanced Search (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?action=search).

(http://i.imgur.com/lBgHNtZ.png)Question:
What different forum jobs are available?
(http://i.imgur.com/PpP0PUi.png)All current forum jobs are listed under Staff List (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?action=staff).

(http://i.imgur.com/lBgHNtZ.png)Question:
What are Masters?
(http://i.imgur.com/PpP0PUi.png)Each of the 12 Elements has a Master. Master is a decorated veteran player of Elements who knows a lot about Elements and is usually skillful in PvP.

(http://i.imgur.com/lBgHNtZ.png)Question:
How do I become a Master?
(http://i.imgur.com/PpP0PUi.png)Before War, we hold the prestigious high-level Trials, during which all community members that have been around for more than 3 months with 200+ posts and 50,000+ score in Elements have a chance to compete for a spot to challenge a Master and fight for the title.

More information here (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/trials/).

(http://i.imgur.com/lBgHNtZ.png)Question:
What is a Grand Master?
(http://i.imgur.com/PpP0PUi.png)Grand Master is basically a "Master of Masters", the highest rated non-staff title on this forum. Only one forum member at a time can be a Grand Master. The Grand Master has to defend his or her title against a Master who has won War.

(http://i.imgur.com/lBgHNtZ.png)Question:
I want to suggest an idea for a new card, what do I do?
(http://i.imgur.com/PpP0PUi.png)Read This (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,5039.0.html) and post your idea Here (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/board,6.0.html).

Just know that there are hundreds of different ideas and it is very unlikely that your idea will be implemented in the game.

(http://i.imgur.com/lBgHNtZ.png)Question:
I posted but my post count didn't increase. Why?
(http://i.imgur.com/PpP0PUi.png)You probably posted in the "Forum Games" section which is the only part of these forums where posting doesn't count towards your overall post count. Another option is that your post(s) got deleted which also deletes the record of that post ever being made.

(http://i.imgur.com/lBgHNtZ.png)Question:
What is Reputation?
(http://i.imgur.com/PpP0PUi.png)Reputation is a small 'compliment' system designed to give points to those who either contribute fantastic ideas, help others on the forums (with deck building, editing card ideas, etc.), or do positive things in general. These points cannot be spent, but can help show off a person's positive character traits.

- You gain +1 rep for each post.
- You gain +3 rep for each topic.
- You need to be Jr. Member or above (30+ posts) to give others reputation.
- Your "Reputation Power" determines how much rep you give to a person.
- You gain one Reputation Power for each 100 reputation points.
- You one Reputation Bar (the green thing) for each 500 reputation points.
- You can give reputation up to 5 times per day (to different users).
- You can give reputation again to the same person after you've given reputation to one other person.
- You cannot lose reputation.
- You can disable reputation from your profile. You will still receive rep from others, but it will only be visible to you.
- You can see who gave you reputation, and why, in your Profile - View Reputation (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;area=reputation).

(http://i.imgur.com/lBgHNtZ.png)Question:
How do I give Reputation?
(http://i.imgur.com/PpP0PUi.png)On the left side of every post, beneath the user's avatar, there is a little :electrum button. Clicking that button and providing a reason will give +rep to that person. You cannot give rep more than once an hour, and you cannot give rep to yourself. You need at least 30 posts to be able to do give Rep.

(http://i.imgur.com/lBgHNtZ.png)Question:
I had a higher post count or some awards on the old forums. Where are they?
(http://i.imgur.com/PpP0PUi.png)They were not transferred. Visit the Profile Restoration Project (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,38313.0.html) and post what you're missing and it may be re-added.

What are the masters?
Masters are members who have shown skill in their element and have helped the forum a lot. Or they have won the master challenge.

...hm...

Q: What is Karma?

A: Karma is a small 'compliment' system designed to give points to those who either contribute fantastic ideas, help others on the forums (with deck building, editing card ideas, etc.), or do positive things in general. These points cannot be spent nor decreased (as of a recent change), but can help show off a person's positive character traits. (If you want to increase someone's Karma, however, you must provide a reason).

Whats the diffrence between PvP and PvE?
Pvp is player vs player and Pve is player vs environment (cpu)

How do i become staff?
Show explicit experience in the job and apply when a thread is started, or SG will give you a promotion when she sees fit.

Whats the trainer?
The trainer is a way to test decks and cards, click resources and then trainer.

Q: My post count doesn't increase, its this some glitch or does the board hate me?

A: Post count only increases in 'serious' sections, your post count will not increase if posted in the off topic section. Also your post count will change if your posts are deleted or if a topic in which you posted has been moved.

it's going to need some tweaking since I'm not sure which boards improve post count and which don't so I said only serious ones increase post count

oh and you might want to leave the board hates me part out, I just thought it was fun

I believe it's only the Forum Games section that does not count posts.

Deck help is a place where your decks get help from other (more experienced) players. The place to get the cards you might've lost from your deck is Troubleshooting.

On the left side of every post, beneath the user's avatar, there is a little + button. Clicking that button will give +1 karma to that person. You cannot give more than +1 karma to one person in an hour. You cannot give +karma to yourself. We used to be able to give -karma, but not anymore.

I believe to give karma you have to have at least 20 posts :/ (correct me if I'm wrong)

and to get awards (the cakes/light bulbs etc) you have to be given them by Moderatos or ScaredGirl (SG). SG will give them out if you win competitions or if you do something awesome ^_^

 Question:
I found a thread that says I'm a hacker! What is this?!

First you need to read more than just the first post. Pay special attention to when the thread was started and what kind of proof they show of you hacking. If you are still confused, PM Scaredgirl for more information.

LOL reminds me of SG's hacker thread in the humor forum

This FAQ is only about these forums. We also have "Element FAQ" that answers to questions about the game. You can find it here: http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,6451.msg73865#msg73865

And the first question is what you talked about. :)

Is there any way to clear out the "Posting Activity By Time" section in my stats?  I just now set the forum time to my local time and it would be interesting to see it correctly.  It easy enough to adjust in my head at the moment, but over time the stats will get all messed up.

Maybe you can ask ScaredGirl if you could create a new account and delete this one.  Then you could get your name spelled correctly.   :P

The only way I'd want to change my name is if I could change it in the game too.  I messed it up there first and figured I'd keep the mistake when I registered for the forum.  For anyone who hasn't noticed it's supposed to be the word "backward" spelled backward, but I accidentally kept the C and K in the original order.  It's not too big a deal, but I did it correctly on Kong and it would be easier to PVP Duel if the names matched.

Is it even possible to change my name but still keep the same account with the same cards and everything?  That's probably a question for Zanz.  I'm sure he'll read this, but if I haven't heard from him or SG in a few days I'll PM one of them.

I believe Rastafla exchanged a tournament win (where usually you'd get to choose an ultra rare card) for a name change on his main account.

Is it even possible to change my name but still keep the same account with the same cards and everything?  That's probably a question for Zanz.
Imagine you were Zanz and you received 20+ emails a day from people asking that two letters from their game account would change places. Now imagine doing those changes to Elements database every day.

Those kinds of useless emails should be avoided at all cost.

"Zanz, what is my password?"
"Zanz, can I change my password?"
"Zanz, what is my username?"
"Zanz, can I change my username?"
"Zanz, how can I upgrade a card?"
etc.

Emails like that are the reason why some important email might not get answered to. Nobody has time to answer to all those dumb questions and requests. I know this from a personal experience because I get a lot of PM's from people asking deckbuilding tips or some totally random stuff. I would image Zanz gets 10 times more mail than I do, so I don't blame him for answering every single one of them. I know I wouldn't.

You now have a chance to do the right thing and not bother the developer with the ridiculously insignificant thing.

I think explaining the situation is better. This way it applies to other similar situations as well, and hopefully there will be less email spam. It's like the old saying where you teach the man to fish instead of giving him fish.

I'm pretty sure that the majority of Elements community want Zanz to spend his time developing the game instead of updating usernames and passwords for people who mistyped or forgot them.

I think it would be good to add the following question to the Forum FAQ, expecially when the last 2 are about karma.

Can you see , who has given you karma ?

No, only SG can,  but you can get hints in karma notifications. Go to
Profile-> Modify Profile -> Notifications-> Notify me when my karma will be changed -> personal message (nothing else!)
This way, you get this:
Quote from: The Oracle
Dear user. Your karma was changed.
The reason of changing was: < insert the text of the text box >

Your karma was changed on this message:
    < insert link to a topic >.
I know, that SG mentioned this feature  here (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,5206.0.html), but´s a locked topic on page 4 of Forum News and Announcements. Couldn´t find another topic about this. You could also find this feature going through your profile options.  But I think, many don´t find it, or don´t change the option, because they think they´d only get a message with "You got karma". Nothing else.

Reputation is basically the same as the old Karma system, only difference being that besides getting rep from other users, your forum activity also gives you rep. Also, the amount of rep you can give to others, is based on the amount of Reputation you have.

That Attack and Defense is related to our new forum game, Battle (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?action=battle). You can find the link in the main navigation. It's basically this forum game you play using your forum account. Go check it out and you'll see.

You should add Reputation instead of Karma.

And in the Trials question - now it's 200 posts and 20.000 score.

Personally, I upload my image at http://imageplay.net/ first, you will then receive a direct link, which you can copy paste into forum posts surrounded by [img][/img] to get an image.

Posting this here because I'd like this mentioned in an obvious place and I don't want to spend another half an hour searching for this fact:

The character limit (unless this has been changed recently) is 65535 characters for a post.

Although if there's some bit of information I'm not aware of, someone should probably correct me :)

Upload the image to a site such as imgur.com (http://imgur.com), copy the image URL, paste the URL in between the [img] tags found by clicking on the button to the right of the "Sp" button and then you're set.  If you're not uploading a picture then you can just copy the image URL.  Make sure the image ends in a .jpg, .png, etc. extension or else the image will not appear.

What means the stars behind some threads?
Title: Re: Forum FAQ
Post by: pikachufan2164 on March 19, 2012, 03:57:32 pm
What means the stars behind some threads?
Star Rating System
We now have a topic rating system. Look for stars at the top of the original post. Click on the stars to rate the topic.

Facts about the rating system:
- You need to be Jr. Member or above (30+ posts) to be able to rate topics
- You cannot rate your own topics
- You can see the number of ratings given by moving your mouse cursor over those small stars on the right side of the topic title (not the big stars inside the topic).
- You cannot change your rating (keep this in mind when rating card ideas etc. that are still a work in progress)
- You cannot list topics by rating. This feature might be added later.

Rating guidelines:
1 star: topics that you think don't offer anything to anyone and should not been event started in the first place.
2 stars: topics that might not be completely useless, but are very close. Maybe they lack content or are very poorly written.
3 stars: topics that you consider average. They are ok, but nothing amazing.
4 stars: topics that go that extra mile and offer something special.
5 stars: topics that you think are amazing. For example, topics where the poster spent countless of hours building or developing something that benefits the whole community.

These guidelines above are just examples. You are of course free to use your own criteria. Just don't simply give 1 star to topics you don't like, and 5 starts to topics you do like. Those two scores should only be given to topics that are either really good, or really really bad.

Yes, ate, figuratively speaking. In order to enable the crawler to crawl everything before the time limit, it had to crawl the print pages. If you look at the print page of a topic, you'll notice that some complex formatting and tags are gone.

Can't is a contraction of cannot, so your first suggestion is technically exactly the same as the question, the only difference being that Why cannot I choose an avatar? sounds a little unusual, despite being more formal. Both options you've provided, as well as the question itself, have identical meanings and are correct in everyday English. Of the three the current question is the most formally correct, as strictly speaking Why can I not choose an avatar? means you have the option of displaying no avatar, and you're asking why you're given that option.

All that is of little relevance, however, when you consider that both the question and answer aren't that hard to understand, as well as being one of the main FAQs you might expect to see.

That said, welcome to the forums!

Often it's unappreciated to post in "old" threads, which were inactive for a "long" time. Is there such a principle on this forum? There's no line about it in the Rules, but I'm still unsure.

Generally Yes, but if what you're posting is contributing and not spam, it's fine. Also often better than making a new thread.

You can find previous versions of the Brawl Rules in the Archive found here (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/brawl-archive/). If you want to see how Brawl functioned in its first iteration you can click here (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/brawl-1/forum-brawl-rules/), however do keep in mind that the rules have changed over time and we'll almost certainly be seeing a revamped rules page for Brawl V.

Hope that helped. c:

Also, It could be considered to move Elements chat & War / Pvp events / tourneys to discord.
Title: Re: Forum FAQ
Post by: CleanOnion on May 30, 2018, 05:48:14 pm
A subreddit would make a great substitute for a forum, assuming that forum has only one board. This forum has many, many boards.

Take Brawl for example. You've got announcement posts, round posts, voting posts, and then you also need a dedicated thread for each team to work with. Multiply that by Trials, War, competitions, every other pvp event, and literally every other board on the forum

Then there's the fact that reddit doesn't allow you to have any user identity beyond your username and your flair - we have profile pictures, staff ranks, post counts, awards, all that stuff gets wiped away

And then you've got reddit markdown vs bbcode - biggest difference here being that reddit natively doesn't allow images in posts, which would break a good many things. And then you've got users who use RES, which would mean that they *do* see images, but only on an inline-block level so the whole image formatting thing just goes to dirt

And then you've got that reddit only has two permission tiers: moderator and non-moderator. Regular users have no control over anything and mods have complete authority. And there's no way to post outside of the main flow of the subreddit ie no secret planning for events or newsletters or anything

And then the more "important" stuff just gets chucked into that main flow as well and lost in a day. How do newsletters, staff hiring threads, forum game signups etc expect to have any visibility beyond a day if there's a throng of new posts above them competing for your attention? What would we do when we need more than 2 sticky posts?

And then there's no notifications or anything, sure you can get reddit PMs but you won't get notified by email if you receive one. What if someone needs your attention for something? Hell, how do you know if someone's replied to a thread that you've posted in? sure, there's /r/whatever/comments, but that's like scrolling through a list of every comment made when it's so much easier to go to /unread and see a list of all the threads that have been posted in since the last time you visited.

And then there's all the old posts. What happens to the old site when we move? What happens to the hundreds, possibly thousands of card design ideas? Do they get deleted, do we bring them with us? Will the first 805688 posts on the subreddit (number of posts on forum at time of this message) just be duplicates of old threads by a bot? Do we just have the old site as a backup database? If so, why even move in the first place?

What about the more wiki-like stuff? The whole subforum on cards, with a board for each element, with a thread for each card? Do they just get thrown into the unending list of posts as well? How would you ever know when someone has asked a question about a card without religiously trawling /comments?

And then at the end of the day - and this argument is a bit extreme - but we'd always be living in the shadow of the reddit admins, who have been known to just flat-out ban subreddits when it reflects poorly on them (though that's never happen to us). And then you've got users being flagged as bots - for example, someone who's making a lot of very similar posts to update a Mafia each round - and they get shadowbanned, and their posts can't be seen by anyone but they don't even know because no one can contact them to tell them about it and they can't ask anyone for help because no one can see their messages. And our own admins (moderators, now) wouldn't be able to do anything about it

In summary: what benefits?

I'm honestly curious to know what benefits you see from moving to a subreddit (other than it being free). If you really do have valid reasons, or more ideas, council is currently trying to make improvements to its Communications Manager role so if you have things to suggest about that we'd love to hear them so we can get a hiring thread back up for that and have more than one applicant

You're right about discord, though, elements chat has -unofficially- for the most part moved to discord, I don't know whether or not you're already on it but the link is here https://discord.gg/qAmfB8T, I expect a more official transition will be happening at some point soontm

Wiki stuff goes in sidebar, hiring is a sticky, PvP events being in discord & having a 2nd sticky thread for PvP events works, usually we only want one big PvP event at a time

Not saying I don't see value in having forum, just that it's not outrageous to suggest reddit as a good community platform. Part of the issue of having all posts & a bunch of useless boards is that it's a bit harder for new comers to see what's happening now

Honestly can make wiki links on sidebar lead to forum & then have sticky posts to current events. But now we're having users using 3 different platforms potentially (reddit, discord, forum). Better to first have forum move off SMF & to some nicer thing that has OAuth

We're coming onto a post-login era
