Spoiler for March NL 2017:
March 2017
Brawl is Over! The Dragon is Slain!
2017 Forum Awards Announced!

  • Trinity has reached the semi-final stage! Air has proven to be the most popular element in this crucial stage, leaving Aves and Afdarenty at an upgrade disadvantage (7) for this round's deckbuilding. worldwideweb3 picked the most unique trio, giving him a strong upgrade advantage (12), with iancudorinmarian making up the field with a balanced upgrade limit (8). We should find out the finalists within the next week!

  • Rags to Riches is in the development stages currently, with ongoing balance discussion which you can take part in. This is an innovative PvP Event, where organizers will send participants 'packs' of cards they can use, similar to draft formats in other card games! If you love the simple thrill of opening a pack of CCG cards, stay tuned, you'll love this format!

  • The adventure of Forum Brawl #6 has ended dramatically, with the sea creatures of The Tentacle's Grip rising from the depths and slaying the dragon! Congratulations JonathanCrazyJ, rob77dp, Krzysiekxd, Aves, Espithel and Silver Emerald, and commiserations to the other three teams. This Brawl was a wonderful showcase of the creative talents of the community, and we'll be looking forward to whatever adventure awaits us in next year's Brawl!

  • As a tribute to The Tentacle's Grip, here is one of our favorite submissions from their portfolio, the game that their Wizard, Aves created for a challenge in round 5. You have 200 moves. Find the twelve treasures, don't wake the dragon! Try to get the highest score, and find the secret message in Treasure Hunt in Aurdinas (External Link).

  • Now that Brawl has reached its fiery conclusion, The Competition Section is due to re-open imminently! We look forward to seeing what tricks the CO team have up their sleeves. Make sure you don't miss the boat on new competitions by signing up for any or all of the Competition Mailing Lists!
  • Expensive cards are all the rage this week in Feb. 4th's Bucket of Bolts as participants attempt to build decks with cards costing 5 or more quanta plus the three elemental bolts!  Ver. 1327 was a bolt from the blue, coming out from nowhere to claim his first tourney win!

  • Do you have the heart of a Lion? No? Well, have the next best thing, the four spiny green toes of an antlion. The Antlion King was Feb. 11th's tourney forcing all decks to include 6 antlions in each deck. Burrowing his way to bragging rights was dragonsdemesne!

  • The nerds face off against the jocks this week in Feb 19th's Brain vs Brawn. Do you side with the brains or the brawns to think or fight your way to the top? A superior intellect lead kaempfer13 to victory with his brainy decks.

  • We have all heard the saying "slow and steady wins the race." And it's never been truer than for Feb. 25th's Slow Start! The innovative tournament organizers stretch the boundaries of game mechanics by forcing players to only play 1 pillar/pendulum per turn(regardless of how many in hand). nlour was the tortoise of this tournament, slowly picking apart opponents and becoming the second first-time victor this month!
  • Championship League: worldwideweb3 takes an early lead in the first season of 2017, with DielgoL38 very close behind in only his first season! Can this newcomer usurp last season's champion and claim the top spot?

  • Leagues 1/2017 are well underway, but with a low number of games played so far, it will only take you a couple of wins before you are pushing for those tasty Nymph/Mark Code rewards! Make sure to join for lots of fun and challenges!

  • If the promise of valuable prizes weren't enough, this season's Leagues have adjusted the meta by allowing shards as standard (though you can ban them if your opponent agrees). On top of that, should you want a challenge, the League Organizers are releasing Weekly Features Rules to spice up your clashes! Good luck!
  • Quantafied 3 - by Linkcat is rumbling on, with 8 elementals still managing to balance their quanta! A special shout out goes to UTAlan and Kuroaitou who managed to get caught in a blizzard and die in Round 1!

  • Elements Mafia 67 - by fabian771 was a crushing defeat for the villagers, as the Mafia capitalized on an ill-conceived love story between rob77dp and godisnowonline... once rob77dp was Nightkilled, godisnowonline sorrowed the loss of rob77dp, and died of dehydration for so many tears dropped.

  • Sign-ups are active for Elements Mafia 68 - by Kuroaitou! YES! You read that right! Kuroaitou returns to forum game hosting in this three-faction mafia! Don't miss out, this rare occurrence deserves participation, we are sure all who play will be grateful for The Return of Kuroaitou!

  • We have exclusive inside information that a brand new forum game is in development! Linkcat was holding his cards close to his chest, but he did say "It may attract PvP fans that don't normally play forum games." So keep an eye out!
All Over The Place!

  • In this new feature, we take a look at all the miscellaneous nuggets of fun going on in the community at the moment!

  • Though he's taken a little break with the excitement of Brawl, ji412jo has been selecting songs from his eclectic musical taste to serenade the community daily in his Song of the Day thread!

  • If you see or hear about a in interesting thread that you think should be included in the newsletter, let the Newsletter Writers know, it may be included in next month's 'All Over The Place' section!

  • Just one staff change this month, so congratulations Aves, our newest Competition Organizer! Having recently won Card Design War 3 and Forum Brawl 6, we are sure his creativity will carry over into excellent, interesting competition design!

Below is the portion of an interview:

What is your favourite card game? (Fippe94)

Fragments. Bias notwithstanding, almost any properly built deck can be viable.

Cat, dog, or bird? (Anonymous)

Birds. Sparrows, in particular. Just common house sparrows.

Who do you hate most? (1011686)

Anyone...

TUNE OF THE MONTH!

This month's tune pays tribute to the Brawlmasters, and Brawl in general, for choosing to create a fantasy story arc in the tasks. The protagonist in the song leads his army to battle, as all the while, many voices are asking the Brawlmasters: "Am I Doing This Right?"

Deck idea by Afdarenty for Trinity play-off Round 7.
Deck review and name by JonathanCrazyJ

Card by card:

Earthquakes: The first, and most important card which will be played in most games with this deck. It is vital that you destroy the opponent's opening stack of pillars and/or pendulums as quickly as possible. The rest of our deck has limited and slow response to any creatures which actually get played, so we have to make sure they aren't played in the first place by denying the opponent's quanta production.

Black Holes: In the meta this deck was played, only duos and trios could be used. While Earthquake destroys the source of quanta, Black Hole's job is to leech whatever quanta has found its way into their quanta pool, especially from the indestructible mark. An interesting side effect of this is that the opponent can't store up quanta to burst with several creatures at once, and realistically has to use it as soon as they have enough to play... anything! This makes the next card significantly more effective.

Auburn Nymphs: don't even be tempted to field this deck without these ultra-rare cards. There may be only two of them, but each one can effectively control 6 creatures, especially when your denial forces the opponent to play them one by one. They are durable against CC, and deal decent enough damage to make them almost always useful.

Pulverizer: The other key card in this deck. Pulverizer fills two important roles in this deck. Firstly it aids in the denial of pillars and pendulums. The best way to play around earthquake is to play pillars one by one, so Earthquake can only destroy one pillar, not 3. Fortunately, that's the worst way to play against Pulverizer. If they play a stack, they will be Earthquaked, if they play one by one, Pulverizer will mop up. Secondly, if they spend any of their precious quanta on permanents trying to avoid your nymphs, your Pulverizer will have that covered.

Antlions and Graviton Guards: This deck has very few slots remaining for damage dealing creatures, but these low-cost, mid-damage creatures are vital to see you to victory. At only two quanta they can be played early, and put some pressure on your opponent to circumvent your denial. Both are also decently durable, Guards with high HP and Antlions with burrow, allowing your precious damage sources to survive long enough to become a problem for your opponent.

Strategy:
Early game is all about denial. First priorty being earthquake, potentially followed by a Black Hole played with Pulverizer. any spare quanta should be spent on throwing your low cost critters on the field, and eventually lock down the board with an Auburn Nymph. The deck is 31 cards to give it the possible deckout win condition against 30 card decks which it locks down but fails to finish off fast enough.

Strengths:
Excellent against quanta-tight trio decks and fat, stally rainbow decks. It excels in any match-up where the opponent can't deal with the combination of an Auburn Nymph and Pulverizer slowly crushing their potential options. As always, Black Hole is great against Supernova decks if you can match each of their s'novas with an immediate Black Hole.

Weaknesses:
In an open meta, it has several weaknesses. Immolation decks will usually out-rush it, as will most other low-quanta rush decks. It's also weak against other denial decks such as Discord/Black Hole. Essentially, your game really needs to shut them down between their first to third creature. Any deck which can escape the clutches of your denial and get some early board presence will be an uphill battle.

Alternative deck choices:
Black Hole is not actually vital to your strategy, as earthquake and Pulverizer can give enough denial to stall your opponent's assault. Replacing the Black Holes with damage such as Steel Golems, more Graviton Guards or Sapphire Chargers to turn it from a denial deck to a domination style deck. If you are worried about facing large stalls a lot, you could lose the Antlions and Graviton Guards for two Overdrives and Armagio for a late-game stall breaking combination.

:light Light as an element is not often associated with abilities, of course, aside from its dominion over Bio-luminescence. In terms of ability readying, :time Time does have Shard of Readiness, however this does not necessarily mean that it should or must have a monopoly over this mechanic. :light Awake | Awake by moyi is a simple, well interpreted example. Though ability readying could potentially be acceptable in any of Air, Light or Time, mass activation may find more balance in the element of Light as it doesn't have many cheap or mid-costing creatures with an ability where mass activation would make for a possibly overpowered threat. Though I do find the cost of this card to make the finished product a bit on the underpowered end, it is always better to have an UP product than an imaginably OP one. Furthermore, terminology consistency is an important part of card design and Awake | Awake may find some use in revising the wording of the mechanic.

Ability Burst

Through EtG gameplay, any veteran will tell you that there can be pivotal turns in any game. Furthermore, they'll tell you that calculations and predicting is a large part of improving as a player. However, there are always somethings that players can be sure about, turn alternation, slimming down decks for consistency, never drawing a Miracle when you need one, etc. Awake | Awake adds something very important to EtG, in that it allows abilities, regardless of the element of the creature, to be used more than once in a given turn. This element of surprise is can be highly effective in a game all about prediction and cold calculation. Awake | Awake activates the abilities of all creatures so that they can be used, regardless of the cost and regardless of whether the ability has been used on the same turn or not. As such, any deck which can take advantage of this ability burst while also being able to effectively generate the cost will do well.

Here is a deck designed by Hyroen that shows an effective way to use :light Awake | Awake!

Deck 1:

(Relics represent :light Awake)

Awake | Awake, as mentioned before, is an excellent card for ability burst, and as it is also able to override quanta limitations it can be used to turn Trios into effective Duos and, thus, increase the consistency and stability of certain decks. What tends to limit the card somewhat, however, is that increased cost, which arguably could be lower by ~1 :light on both versions and still be balanced. As such, you certainly want the card to come out when appropriate but also be housed in a deck where :light is a main component. In the deck presented, :light is used not only in order to be able to dish out another variant of damage, a DoT in Poison counters, but also to heal oneself through Sanctuary, complementing the whittling aspect of the deck. :water Water, a powerful stalling element and ideal complement of the powerful healing of :light Light, is further empowered by its Shard of Patience, not only to be able threaten stalling decks, but to get around Dimensional Shield, Shard of Sacrifice, and Sundial, 3 of several key players in the metagame.

Though Light is not classically seen as an element of abilities, Awake | Awake would certainly add an interesting card to its largely simple and direct collection of cards. Further reinforcing the theme of self-sufficiency, Awake | Awake adds not only a thematic card to Light's arsenal but one that would continue to expand the variation and nuance of Duos and Trio decks. Simplicity in card design is often hard to attain in a game where so many card ideas have already been presented, but sometimes, every now and then, right above someone's head, a :light bulb turns on.

To see more of moyi's work check out the Card Ideas & Art.

Until next time!

I really like that part. The older newsletter formats desperately needed a "Miscellaneous but Relevant!" section, e.g: farewells, weddings (looking at you, Krzy ;)), major contributions, trending etg memes&quotes (similar to the 'best quote' nominees in yearly awards), etc.
And we keep driving into the night

I'm not seeing how the CIotM even actually works in that deck. From what I'm understanding, it just readies the ability, whereas it seems that the deck is implying that it either A: Casts the abilities automatically, or B: Removes the quanta cost for that usage, which does not seem to be true, when looking at the thread.

EDIT: League also link to 3/2013.
