Title: General Rules and Transfer Thread - Post your forum game ideas here!
Post by: The Oracle on April 16, 2010, 01:51:47 am

Forum Games General Rules

Starting New Forum Games

Folks simply walking up in the Forum Game section and posting their forum game ideas or match threads would result in a somewhat fun but completely disastrous chaos. As such, you're encouraged to post your >95% completed game ideas right here in this topic for consideration/transferring into the main section. Linkcat and CleanOnion are in charge of starting new forum games. If you have an idea for a new forum game, PM it to the Forum Game Organizers, or post it in this thread.

If your idea is a good one, they will split it into its own thread and the game can begin.
If not, you won't just be turned away with a "This is awful". The FGOs will advise you on whether or not your game is more suited to Off-Topic Discussions or Roleplaying subforums, or if it just needs a little adjustment they'll help you with that.

Bad game ideas:
- games that encourage spamming, quotation pyramids/chains, and or random responses without a goal or purpose
- games where everyone replies with only 1-3 words in reaction to the post above
- games that extensively only use RPG writing elements and has no sense of strategy, cooperation, and/or tactics (i.e. - based only on writing abilities)
- games that require the actual game more than the forum (an account with X score, or an account with X cards and electrum, etc.)
- games where people are forced into doing things that may cause external harm, or provide dangerous real-life outlets
- games that incite unnecessary flaming, trolling, harassment, or extremely inappropriate/illegal media
- games that encourage circumventing forum/chat/in-game rules in order to win
- games that Linkcat a mentally challenged monkey could easily win

Good game ideas:
- ANYTHING else (potentially)

If you need help writing your Forum Game, you could either post it here for public input or PM it to the Forum Game Organizers and they will help you.

A couple of tips for making a good game:
- make sure your game is balanced
- a themed game, eg a game set in the Game of Thrones universe, is likely to turn away players who aren't familiar with that theme
- make sure it's easy for players to understand what's happening - for example some games use a spreadsheet to visualize things (eg Relic Sweeper), some games have their host post in the thread after each round (eg Mafia)
- make sure your post looks nice and any required reading material is laid out nicely and easy to understand

Posting
You can basically post as much as you like, but please try to avoid needless spamming.

Remember, posts on this particular forum section do not count towards your total post count, so spamming here to increase you "forum level" won't work. However, they do count for the Trials post requirement.

Specific matches between players (such as the original Connect 4 game matches) are posted in a topic to be split into their specific matches to be more organized.

If you have any questions, please PM the Forum Game Organizers or an Administrator. Thanks.

Have fun everyone.

The Forum Game section doesn't have a General Discussion topic yet, so I'll post this here.

To whom it may concern: I see you asked for editing permission for the archived Pokémon Picross puzzle, but I couldn't give you editing rights, because your email is blocked by Chesterfield County Public Schools' administrators. Please ask for permission again from a public email, otherwise I cannot grant you access.

Here's a forum game idea I've had on my mind for some time now:

THE AMBIDEX GAME(AKA "The Prisoners' Dilemma")
Idea by randomperson123; Hosted by [Kuroaitu(?) I definitely won't be hosting; that's for sure.]

Based on the Prisoners' Dilemma paradox and Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward

Objective
Ally and/or betray your fellow players to earn 9 points and win the game!

Rules
Sign up on the thread by just... well... signing up! That's all you need to do!
Each player will start with 3 points.
Each and every round, players will be randomly partnered up. If there are an odd number of players, one player will be in his own team. Each two-person team will be paired with another two-player pair.
There will be a 24-hour period where players can converse with each other on the forum... maybe you can convince another player to ally... or betray... or convince them to ally so you can betray them!
After this 24-hour period is over, there will be another 24-hour period... during this 24-hour period, there may be no posts in the forum thread at this time... during this 24-hour period, you and your partner must choose whether to ally or betray, but beware! The team you're paired with is also choosing whether to ally or betray! And that could affect your points! When your team is ready to send in their decision,  ONE PLAYER must PM the host with your choice (either "ally" or "betray").
(I don't know how to do tables so I'm just going to do a list of outcomes for now...)
If both teams choose "ally," then everyone gets 2 points.
If one team chooses "ally" and the other team chooses "betray," the people in the team the chose "ally" lose 2 points and the people in the team that chose "betray" gain three points.
If both teams choose "betray," no one gains or loses any points.

This round cycle will continue until at least one person wins.

If and when your number of points goes down to 0, you die and are eliminated from the game.
When your number of points reaches 9 or higher, you win the game!

Rewards
The winner(s) will definitely receive Masters of Games points; how many points will be given out will be for someone else to decide.
Title: Speed Mafia
Post by: Submachine on September 19, 2016, 07:04:26 pm
Here's an idea for a fastpaced mafia game. This wouldn't count towards numbered mafia games, but it would allow matches that can be finished in one sitting if all players are present.

SPEED MAFIA

For best experience, this is best played with a handful of players who are all in chat at the same time. Otherwise, this game is still playable in a standalone topic.
Required player amount: Between 7 and 11.

Roles:

There are differences compared to general rules and gameplay:

The game has the following phases:

Night Phase --> Main Phase 1 --> Judgement Phase 1 --> Main Phase 2 --> Judgement Phase 2 --> etc. --> Night Phase

ER and 1U abilities can only be used during the Night Phase.
Guns can only be used during a Main Phase.
During Main Phases, players have the chance to accuse someone by saying "I accuse [player_name]!". Once a player is accused, the respective Judgement Phase instantly begins.
During the Judgement Phase, all players have to send either "[player_name] Guilty" or "[player_name] Innocent" to the host privately. (not receiving a choice counts as an "Innocent" vote and results in a warning)
To deem someone guilty, at least half of the players (rounded up) need to vote guilty. Players deemed Guilty are killed at the end of the respective Judgement Phase.
After a Judgement Phase is finished, a new Main Phase starts and a new player can be accused.
One player can only accuse once between two Night Phases!
During a Judgement Phase, only one player can be judged. Each player has his own Judgement Phase, that's why there can be multiple during a day.
The next night starts if noone wants, or is able to accuse anyone during a Main Phase.

Setups:

I think that's all. If something is unclear, I can answer questions. Are we safe to start signups?
Title: New game idea - Favor of the False Gods!
Post by: theelkspeaks on December 17, 2016, 01:20:10 pm
Favor of the False Gods

In each round, players will compete in challenges to accumulate favor, and use that favor to beseech the false gods to smite one of their foes.  In the end, only one player will be favored by the false gods.

At the beginning of the game, players will be divided evenly into a number of teams between 2 and 4.  Players will compete as a team to accumulate favor in each round.  Favor will be won on an individual basis.  The team which acquires the least average favor in a given round must sacrifice one of their own players.

To determine which player will be sacrificed, each player may beseech the false gods to smite their teammates.  The total power of their favor may be distributed in any way they choose.  If Joe has 10 favor, he may use 7 favor to smite Peg, and 3 favor to smite Sam.  The player with the greatest amount of favor spent to smite them will be eliminated from the game.  The total favor spent against each player will be revealed, but the source of that favor will not.

At some point in the game, the teams will be combined into a single team.  During the favor accumulation challenge, one player will earn Sanctuary granted by the False Gods.  That player cannot have any favor spent to smite them in that round.
When only two or three players remain in the game (which number is the case will not be known to the players until it occurs), the players will begin the Final Test of Favor.  The finalists will receive favor equal to their current total, and each player eliminated after the teams are merged may also add their favor to the finalist of their choice.  Finalists will be given 48 hours to make the case as to why they have played the best game.  The finalist who receives the most total favor (their own plus that granted by the eliminated players) is declared the winner and Crowned by the False Gods!

Additional Twists may occur in the game

:entropy Discord - The players will be reshuffled in some manner among the teams.  The number of teams may or may not change.
:light Miracle - If a player earns a Miracle, they may play it secretly on any player (including themself) in any round with 5 or more players remaining.  The Miracle cancels all favor spent against the protected player.  The player and target of the Miracle will be revealed in the elimination announcement.
:life Emerald Shield - If a player earns an Emerald Shield, they may control target player's favor for one round.  It must be played before the start of the favor distribution, and may only be played if 5 or more players remain in the game.
:earth Basilisk Blood - If a player earns a Basilisk Blood, they may prevent target player from spending any favor for one round.  It must be played before the start of the favor distribution, and may only be played if 5 or more players remain in the game.
:darkness Vampire Dagger - If a player earns a Vampire Dagger, they may kill an eliminated player "for good", preventing that player from distributing their favor to a finalist.  The Vampire Dagger may only be played at the beginning of the Final Test of Favor.

Looking for Feedback!

This can either be a PvP event or a Forum Game, dont really know which one it would fall under.

Idea for game= Scattered Remnants
take apart the creatures and hide the parts in the forums.
Creature parts:
Mercs= Shoulder pads, Boots, Helm
Spiders= Silk, Legs, (Other)
Wyrm=Wings, Wyrm Head, Wyrm Tail
etc.
So things like Silk and Wings will be interchangeable, meaning you can use wings to make Wyrms, Firefly Queen, Dragons etc. but you will need the other parts to complete the creature. On the spiders, the (other) would corresponding with their element. It could be fleshy clumps for flesh spider, space dust for phase spider etc. Same with scorps.

Trading parts with other players is encouraged.

Weapons can work the same way. Weapons may not need interchangeable parts.
I can break down the cards into components as that will be time consuming. the parts are then scattered across the forums.

Phase 1: The Hunt

Players have 48 hours to search the forums, find the parts they want, and trade with other players. Once a player finds a piece, they will post the piece they found and where they found it. They will also post if its for bids or if they want to keep it. That piece cannot not found in the same spot once one player finds it. Although, common pieces will have multiple copies in different locations. Spells will be given based on the oracle spins for these 48 hours and the criteria will be set once the competition begins. (example; You may choose 1 spell from the element that corresponds with the card given by the oracle. if you spin a  nymph, 3 spells from any element of your choice can be obtained).

Phase 2: The Prep
24hours
Trading will be extended through prep but no new parts/spells can be obtained. During this time, decks should be being built and optimized. You may notice that decks will be crazy and non meta due to scarcity of rare parts and spells. Trading should play a huge part in this phase. Trading is done publicly on the forums under the threads where you post the parts you find. It should be a bidding type system. (Example; Player1 finds Silk, common piece but also very valuable. Player 1 does not care to use this so he sets them up for trade. Player 2 bids a Crusaders Helm and Player 3 bids a Wyrm head. Player 1 can choose which deal looks better to him and complete the trade.)

Phase 2: The Battle
72 hours
Battles will now take place. Best of 5 matches. Player matches will be automatically set by using Challonge or another program. Once a player beats another, that player obtains the defeated opponents deck and any remaining parts they salvaged. If they would like to make amends and adjustments to their deck with the new pieces/cards they obtained, they must quickly do so before the next match is ready. Last player with a deck wins.

Other notes;
PPM's are free. Once a player is able to create a card, they can have 6 copies of that card. Each player is given a dagger and a shield at the beginning of the competition. These cannot be broken down or traded. They are simply there in case the player is unable to create a card by end of prep, this way that player has a (very small) chance of winning. Common pieces will be... common. Rare pieces will only have a small amount of copies hidden. A few full cards labeled Legendary will be hidden. These are very rare to find but can be found in area's of the forum that would reflect that card, (Example; You could find a full Chimera in the thread where Chimeras were introduced.) <--- It will be a better cards then a Chimera.

Please give more feedback. This sounds like a lot of fun to me. The only issue i see so far is taking the time to hide soooo many pieces in the forum so other piece obtaining ideas are needed.

Once a player is able to create a card, they can have 6 copies of that card. Once a player is able to create a deck, they can challenge another player in a 'pinks' style match. They will get the cards from the opponents deck and that opponent will be eliminated upon defeat. The person that gained the deck can either use the cards as a whole to make updates to heir deck, break them down into components and trade them (Only 1 of each card is able to be broken down. So if they defeat an opponent with 6 Mercs in their deck and gain those 6 Mercs, to break it down would use all 6 copies but only give components for 1 card) or they can trade the full card with another player.

Last player with a deck wins.

This looks like it could be an interesting forum game, with a slight PvP side to it. I do see some flaws that might need to be fixed for a more balanced forum game.

One major flaw I see is hiding the pieces throughout the forums. While this could be a fun scavenger hunt style of game and something different and unique than what has usually been done around the forum, I personally don't think it is the right fit for this community having a playerbase of such varying timezones and activity levels. With varying timezones between a large part of this community, one player could find all the pieces and have multiple decks ready before another player may have even woken up from sleep. This could cause someone to have to wait long periods to be able to challenge and play against another participant, or cause them to wait long enough that they may forget about this game. By having players scroll through many old posts and sections that might not have been seen in a long time, is only really advantageous to those who have large amounts of time to kill just aimlessly scrolling through extra pages. Those who do not have large amounts of extra time to sit on their phone or be at a computer may be discouraged by the time commitment needed to have a fighting chance in this game and may not even attempt to join.

What I would suggest instead is have rounds (maybe 24 or 48 hours) where players get to make one or two actions from a set of allowed actions.
Actions could be:
(just rough ideas based on what you have already stated)

Having a time limit of 24 or 48hrs allows all players in the event to have a chance to at least look at the forum during a round. Needing to submit an action for finding pieces rather than scroll through the forums numerous pages gives all players the same opportunity and relies more on thought process, individual strategic gameplay, and maybe a little RNG luck instead of time availability, and opportunity to scroll through multiple pages faster.

This is just my opinion on it based on other successfully run forum games in this community, where most(if not all) have used the 24hr or 48hr round format. Also if you are looking for help on making the creature/spell/weapon pieces lists as well as any additional work on the rules, I'd be happy to lend you a hand if you need.

You have not addressed mathman's criticism that whoever sinks the most time into finding all the parts will blow everyone else out. How are you intending to even hide the parts in the forum in a way that can't be tracked?

I request access to post my forum game.

I promise it will be a hit and I promise it will be well moderated throughout the entire game and seen through to its completion. I can assure attendance levels of 12+ players maybe even as high as 50.

Based on the board game:

Finger Guns at High Noon

The game consists of rounds. Each round, the players can discuss what they plan to do that round, though players are not required to be truthful.

When a player declares to be the Sheriff of the round, all discussions must stop and players must choose an action (send to host).

  • POSSE: If half or more of the current survivors choose Posse, all other survivors lose 5 health.
  • SALOON: Choose a number between 2 and 4 (2,3,4). If only you chose this number this round, you gain that much health.
  • SHOT: Name a target. He loses 2 health.
  • LASSO: If you are the only player with Lasso this round, gain and resolve the faceup ally card. (I will not list the ally cards. I will reveal them if we decide to play.)
  • DYNAMITE: Your neighboring survivors both lose 3 health, you lose 1 health.
  • POWER SHOT: Name a target. He loses 6 health, unless you lost health to a SHOT or DYNAMITE action this round.
  • NO ACTION: Self explanatory.

When everyone chose an action, the actions are resolved in the order of their appearance in the above list (Posse first, Power Shot last).

Everyone starts with 20 health. When a player loses all health, he becomes a ghost. Becoming a ghost cancels the player's further actions for that round.

Ghosts can also choose actions, but only SALOON, SHOT, and LASSO. Ghosts cannot gain health or allies, but they can prevent others from getting them.

The game can end in two ways:

Explain more about the rules for declaring sheriff. Explain what neighboring survivors means. Other than that, looks good. Sorry for responding late, I stopped getting email for PMs for some reason.

Explain more about the rules for declaring sheriff.
A player is declared as Sheriff as soon as he says I am the Sheriff now.

(Variations are fine too, like "I'm the new sheriff in town!" or "Obey me citizens, I am the Sheriff now". The point is to make it clear you are taking the role, while allowing some role-play.
A bad example is saying "There's a new Sheriff in town", because it is not clear if you take the role or not.)

Explain what neighboring survivors means.
Neighboring players are next to each other on the signup list. The first and last players also neighbor each other.

And a special rule: Ghosts do not count when checking who are neighbors.
