Title: The Forum Search
Post by: Naesala on June 21, 2014, 10:41:01 pm
We all know it isn't the best. But does anyone know why, and if there is any way to improve it? I think the forum would be a lot more useful, for everyone, if there was a better search available.

If this has been discussed at length before, well, search didn't turn anything up for me. I know it's been mentioned and Google offered as an alternative, but I'd still like to know if we could improve ours.

I think the best (and probably easiest) fix is actually a way to automate the google search and show it in the current format.

Necro ftw.

Google Search will only be able to search topics that are viewable to the public (i.e. guests). Can anyone provide an example search criteria and topic or topics that you expect to show up but don't?

One problem is that when searching inside a topic, only a maximum of 10 results shows up, even if there are more.

One issue is that the search doesn't recognize other forms of the same word.
For example, if I search "probability complicate", I get one result: http://elementscommunity.org/forum/war-archive/war-7-round-9/msg1121635/#msg1121635
If I search "probability complicates", I get a different result: http://elementscommunity.org/forum/card-ideas-and-art/unstable-colony-unstable-cell/msg1048822/#msg1048822
"probability complicated" gets 10 results, none of which are the same topics as the previous two.
"probabilities complicate" is the same as the first search, because that post contains both "probability" and "probabilities".
But "probabilities complicates" returns nothing.
"probabilities complicated" gives another three new results.

Another problem is that sometimes the search only gives one page of results (10 results) when there should be many. For example, the search "nymph" only returns one page, when there are many more posts than that containing the term. ("purple nymph", for example, returns 91 pages (910 results), and any post matching "purple nymph" should also match "nymph".)

Is there a reason why attempting to search via Google causes the search to default back to searching the entire forum?  I remember this actually taking the user to Google before.

Found a fix for this, we'll have it installed soon.

Deck search is buggy. It result no posts found even if there are posts with them around. Ex: searching for Chaos Power (6u2) results in nothing founds even if there is a deck with Otys and Chaos Power in the Duo Deck department.

Yes, forum search needs some massive improvement, we are aware. I'm leaving this topic open until we take care of this.

Is there a way to search for posts by Date or by a Date Range?

This is fixed. Choosing Google from the dropdown will now search on Google itself.
