English-only or multilingual CHAT? https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=1400.msg13049#msg13049

English only = Use English-only for main chat room discussion (multilingual chat room will also be made available). Using non-English language will result in removal of those messages and/or warnings.

Multilingual = You can speak any language you want in main chat room, Klingon included.

We have a small community so I'm sure that one "Non-English" chat room would be enough.

I won't be doing anything about it just yet because there are no settings for that and I have to go edit the code directly which takes some time. And right now I have no time. :)

I don't understand what you mean by that. How would having mods make a difference?

I personally don't mind when our non-native English speakers start conversing in another language when someone else shows up that can speak their language.  Plus, it'd be a pain for them to open two chat windows so they can speak to their one friend in one room and everyone else in another room.  Plus, if it's bothering everyone else, they can make an ad hoc room on the spot and invite their non-English speaking friend to it (at least if I understand the chat room correctly).  So no need to go through all that extra coding just for another non-English room.

my fav language is german, so it will in most situations better, if i can explain my thoughts in my words, but in a chatroom, with almost only english-speaking people, where is the reason to speak german? if i will talk with other elements, i will talk with everybody... not only the german speaking elements...
perhaps i dont understand it right... when im angry and say "scheisse" which means "shit" or "fuck" in english, then i will be warned for not speaking english? i dont think so?!

to cut a long story short: english only!  ;)

Its a situation where if it aint broke don´t fix it. If somebody really does feel disturbed bye some others talkin in another language,or they do it to extra to spam  a mod can intervien and just ask theme to stop.

That won't work. Multilingual posting should be either allowed or forbidden. There shouldn't be any case-by-case evaluation every single time someone speaks non-English. That's too confusing for everyone. I mean who decides how much non-English you can speak?

The general rule of this forum is that the less moderation, the better. If multilingual posting is not that big of a deal, like what the situation seems to be right now, we are going to have multilingual posting in chat.

It was a close race but Multilingual managed to get the win with 10-9. Actually even if it had lost with a couple of votes, end result would still be the same. The only situation where we would have gone with "English-only", would have been if a huge majority wanted that.

This matter is not settled. Chat is multilingual. Closing thread.
