Can we please elect Council 5? https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=43509.msg1000396#msg1000396
« on: September 17, 2012, 05:05:07 pm »
Council 4 has been active since October last year, I would kindly (this time) ask that we elect council 5.

How do we fairly elect a new council?
1.  Public Polls for reference only (who the people want)
2.  Council selects their replacements based on applications (who council thinks would do a good job)
3.  Council 5 is elected for 3 months.  Council 6 is elected 3 months later.  The new rule should be that you can serve a max of 2 terms in council and then you have to sit one term out.  Council 4 has had a year so they all have to sit out of C5.
4.  Any council member that does not fufill their duties either by afking, being non-participatory, whatever else can be replaced at any time.

These are just my own ideas, I'm interested in opinions on how to run a fair election if you can think of something better.

Public pool should be deciding.
There are many members in Council 4 that deserve to be in Council 5.
You know, a long time ago being crazy meant something. Nowadays everybody's crazy.

Public poll is just a popularity contest then.  SG abolished that system for C4 with good reason.

I'm not saying that members of Council 4 don't deserve it.  That is not my intent at all.  However, they have had their titles for almost a year, and I think other people deserve a chance to contribute.  Getting more people involved in the community, especially people that haven't had that chance before is a good thing.

I'm having a hard time understanding why people that are not involved in the community would make good Council candidates.

If people need to be on the Council in order to be able to contribute to the community then that's a much bigger problem.  They don't though.

Now that I come to think of it, may I ask what is the purpose of the council, in general?

Their exact role has always been a mistery for me.

We appoint staff members, make sure the forum's running, plan out larger events like War and Brawl prior to execution, and make sure the Newsletter gets posted.

I think other people deserve a chance to contribute.  Contribute as in... "appoint staff members, make sure the forum's running, plan out larger events like War and Brawl prior to execution, and make sure the Newsletter gets posted."  It doesn't sound that hard.  I bet we have enough people that care about the community to make it happen.

Will, Zblader, would you rather just keep doing what we've been doing... or?

Careful.  Sounds like you're stepping on the toes of Admins, Warmasters, and Brawlmasters here.

Tiko, according to this the 4th Council's two main jobs were:

1. Appointing new staff members
2. Starting and finishing different projects that benefit the Elements community
I think the Council had a bunch of projects under consideration but SG being eaten by a bear and then the forum transition complexified things.

My apologies. I drew from memory and found the corresponding thread soon after. However IIRC the Council does involve itself with the 'preplanning' stage of such activities - once such acitvities are completely up and running most management is in the hands of the War/Brawl Masters.

This is true. I do think that the current Council has the potential to start a new project if people are willing to suggest new ideas.

If the forum really desires new members on Council 5, I would suggest we elect a Council 5 and merge it with Council 4. Like stated above lots of people in Council 4 are still active and competent, plus we've actually lost a few council members over time on the two forums.

As a sidenote : Bear in mind that Council, like any other staff position, has time constraints, and electing a new Council can take a while especially if the process is application based. RL can play as important a factor in a Council Member's activity as it can with any ETG player, and just because someone is inactive doesn't mean he or she in incompetent.

C4 has sat since October 18, 2011, a few councillors have been on even longer than that.  Appointing new staff members is the job of the council.  I don't see why having fresh blood on the council would be bad if the council themselves are in charge of picking them.

If the forum really desires new members on Council 5....
So far it's just me.  : P

I agree with Plast here. What happened with that system that council was elected after every 3 months (if I remember correctly)?

As I am just a common pleb and have never seen the inner workings of what council does, take with a grain of salt.

Staff positions: It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what staff positions need replacing. I don't consider the time that it takes to read applications more than what 3 admins that are only active once every 2 days for a few hours (Not saying our admins are inactive).

Starting and finishing different projects that benefit the Elements community: Besides Newsletter, since I am a common pleb, I do not really know how much effort is done/what projects are being done. I do not know how much they effect a person who only does PvP/ only does CI&A/Comp stuff/ Only hangs around in chat and Off Topic. While I do not consider this council to be inefficient in regards to this, I do not know how efficient they are. I also consider that new blood is good and can offer new insight. I also consider that having multiple old members of it to help guide as a + more than a -. I would prefer an evenly split new and old council with the method of determining who stays to be decided based on how the new members would be added over the current council over a complete group of new people. Admins don't need to be council members either or could completely be the old guard.

Although I prefer a more open system where we know in general what council is actively doing and when at the least. We know when staff positions are added but do not have much of an idea at all what else they are doing (minus newsletter) and I consider that knowledge greater than the surprise of something new.
