Lore

Spoiler for Hidden:
Welcome to Space, the final frontier!

Around 15 000 years ago, a mysterious alien race, now only known as the Ancestors, traveled around the galaxy. Not much is known about them, but it was thanks the their generosity that many of the now well-known races achieved space-flight and began to explore the galaxy.

Nowadays the Ancestors are long gone, and the stories about them are reduced to half-forgotten legends. Their existence could have been all a story as far as you knew. Until today.

An unknown signal, traveling faster than the speed of light, had been observed at many places in the galaxy. The news of this signal had spread at warp-speed and now almost everyone is talking about it. Its energy signature and the speed of the signal only matched a single type of signal in the Galactic Database. A type of signal that only one race in the known universe knew how to create: The Ancestors.

The various Empires and the Galactic Council tried desperately to pinpoint the source of the signal, but it proved almost impossible. It was as if the signal came from every part of space at once.

However, while none of the results were made known to the public, a few empires and private corporations had managed to figure out a few possible locations from where the signal could have originated.  All the possible sources were in dangerous situations, and this is where you come in.

You are one of the Captains sent out to locate the source of this mysterious signal. To make sure you get there first, you must work in absolute secrecy. You will gather a small crew that will not draw much attention, and attempt to find the source of the signal.

Each of the captains is sent out by a different organization, be it a large empire, a galactic corporation, or perhaps a group of space pirates that have intercepted communications from any of the former.

What is Forum Brawl?
Forum Brawl is a forum event where several teams show their snazziness against each other in different tasks that happen all around the forums.

Teams will have 1-5 members, each with a variety of skills and roles. Players go head-to-head against players from other teams by doing tasks related to these various roles. A Voting Panel decides which players perform the best, and points are awarded accordingly. After 6 rounds of brawling, the team with the highest score will be the winner.

What makes Forum Brawl different from most other events is the fact that there is (almost) no PvP in Forum Brawl. The event is all about creativity, artistic skills, and most importantly, forum awesomeness.

Brawlmasters
We will have two Brawlmasters who are responsible for Forum Brawl event. They will have an active role in designing the tasks for each round, and will handle all the day-to-day actions like posting new topics or replying to questions about the event. Brawlmasters will be appointed by the Elements Council. This time around they are ARTHANASIOS and Fippe94.

How to Join Forum Brawl
Forum Brawl will usually happen right after War event ends, or soon thereafter. Once the sign-up topic is posted and the Captains are made public, any community members may join the event.

Each player will create a short application in their own thread for the Captain to later vote on. An example is given below. Players should list their top 3 favorite teams, their Preferred Tasks, time zone, and availability. They should also include if they are willing to do more than one task per round, in case a Captain decides to have fewer than 5 players on their team. Team names will be made available before the application phase; these names will be chosen by the Captain. Additionally, members should, if able, create a short portfolio of their works via links to show their ability and should write a small paragraph on why they would be good members for Brawl. Important things to consider are dependability, availability, and skill.

There a five types of Task, shown below, and an ideal team would include 5 members whose Preferred Tasks meet all those categories. For example, in a team with 5 players:
  • Captain: Master A
  • Mapper: Player B
  • Mechanic: Player C, Player D
  • Space Trooper: Player E
  • Log Keeper: Player C
This is a good team because, between all players, each task has someone doing it. If a Captain makes a team in which nobody wants to do one of the Tasks... well, that team's submissions for that Task won't be very good!

Building the Team
Captains will have 35 initial points to be spent on their team members. They will bet with these points and will start Brawl with the remaining ones. They can not go into negative points. Bidding will occur in Google Docs (or in application threads, if the Captains prefer) that any member can see at any time. If a player already have the winning bid on 5 players, he cannot bid on a new player.
If two Captains bid equally for a player, the Captain who are highest on that player's favorite list gets the player. If neither of the tied Captains are the favourite list, whoever bet first gets the player. If a player has to be substituted in later to replace inactive team members, they will cost the Captain the average cost of all players who were bid on.

A Captain does not have win the bid on 5 players. The Captain is free to choose how many players he or she wants on his team, and could even decide to not bid on any players. However you cannot increase your team size after the auction is finished, so remember that fewer team members means more job.

Spoiler for application example:
Brawl Application

Name: CleanOnion
Favoured Teams: Adventure Co., Team Narcissists, I Think Lord Of The Rings Is Overrated
Favoured Roles: Mapper, Log Keeper, Mechanic
Timezone (GMT): GMT+0
Usually Online: Afternoons and Evenings
Portfolio: Artist - here's mah portfolio http://elementscommunity.org/forum/portfolio/clean0nion's-portfolio-10-cards/
Writer: I won a competition once
Why I would make a good Brawl member: I would make a good Brawl member because if you don't vote for me, you are discriminating against onions. And that is illegal.

Tasks
1. Captain (Boss)
It's your ship and your rules. You will lead you crew to victory, whatever it takes.
Each team will have a Captain whose main responsibility is to build the team. Captains will also participate in the event by duelling other Captains in random tasks. Captainis different from other roles because you do not sign up to be a Captain in the normal application phase. Masters of each element will first be given the opportunity to become Captain. There will also be a public application thread for Captain before the auction, however the Masters have precedence if there are too many signups. The event is not compulsory, so Masters should not be afraid to decline if they feel they do not have enough time or interest.
Captain tasks will vary between each of the other roles.

2. Mechanic (Card Design)
As the ship's Mechanic, it's your job to make sure everything works. You are also able to create a variety of tools and weapons to help your crew.
Mechanic tasks are based on designing EtG-style cards for a variety of purposes by producing a new card idea based on theme and restrictions posted each round. Mechanics must not produce artwork for their card unless otherwise specified.

3. Space Trooper (Deckbuilder)
You're the most battle-experienced crew member, and it's your responsibility to lead the fight against whatever threats you might face.
Space Troopers are expected to assemble decks based on theme and restrictions posted each round. You may be expected to write a little to explain the deck although this is normally optional.

4. Mapper (Artist)
You keep track of where you have been and where you are going, ad thanks to your artistic prowess your maps are always memorable.
Mapper tasks revolve around producing artwork. Unless otherwise specified you may use any medium you desire. Please note that despite the name, a Mapper's job does not consist of simply drawing maps (although that might be needed at some point too).

5. Log Keeper (Writer)
As the ship's Log Keeper, you are the one that records your journey and makes sure the Captain's Log is kept up to date
Log Keepers are required to write stories, poems and prose.

Submission rules for each category may be altered each round based on the task.

Additionally, players may choose to be a Mercenary (Substitute)
You just want fame, glory and riches, and it doesn't matter how you get it. Your allegiance lies with the highest bidder.
Mercenaries do not participate at the start of the event. Instead, they act as a sort of backup in case other players go inactive and their team require substitutes. Mercenaries replace inactive team members, and will get the forum award icon if that team wins as if they had joined at the start of the event.
Players may sign up as a Mercenary once the event has begun, or include it in their Preferred Roles.

Remember, just because you've picked a role as your preferred choice doesn't mean you're not allowed to do any other tasks. Once you're in your team, you'll normally find that everyone helps out a little bit everywhere. Let your Captain divide up the tasks!

If enough players at the end of the auction did not end up on a team, it is possible that they will form a team of their own. This is up to the Brawl Masters' discretion.

Rounds
Forum Brawl has a total of 6 rounds, each lasting 7 days. A new round will start as soon as the last one ends. Tasks will be relatively simple so 7 days should be more than enough time to perform them. Overall workload of Forum Brawl will be much less than in events like War and Trials. The event lasts 7 weeks in total (not including signups and auction, and the final week is only voting).

Scoring

Scoring will be based on a community vote. Each task will be judged independently from the other tasks in a round (including each component of a Combo task). All of the submissions in a task will be ranked into an order based on how many votes they earned from the community.

For each round, there will be a form where you can fill in your votes.

Each voter should assign "voting points", or voints, to as many submissions as they like. Each voter must allocate 10 voints per task, and a voter isn't allowed to give more than 5 voints to a single submission. If you like, you can give 5 voints to 2 submissions, or divide it up as much as you like. But don't give an equal number of voints to all the submissions, because that's really boring and nobody will like you.

To let people see your thought process, you can also post your reasoning in the voting topic, although this is not required.

Additionally, there will be a Voter's Panel. This will operate like a little Brawl team, except the submissions it produces will be votes.

Voters who are part of the Voter's Panel and voters who are not will have exactly the same amount of voting power. However, Voter's Panelists are obligated to vote each round, as well as give their reasoning for their votes. Being on the Voter's Panel comes with a fair chunk of community respect and the opportunity to get your voice heard in the event, so do consider signing up. Sign ups will run at the same time as Captain/Boss applications. Brawlmasters will be part of the Voter's Panel.

Players who are part of a Brawl team can vote, however special rules apply for them. In each team, at least one player must vote. Each player who wants to vote gives out points as normal. However these points are not counted in the same way as non-team voints. For each team, all the points of its voting players are added, and whichever team gained the most points, will get 2 voints, while the second team will get 1 voint. If two teams gets the same amount of points from a team, they will get 1 voint each. Players can not give any voting points to their own team.

Spoiler for Team voting example:
Team Red has 3 players (A, B and C)
Team Blue has 5 players (K, L, M, N, O)
Team Green has 1 player (R)
Team Black has 2 players (X, Y)

Each player has 10 voints to give out, max 5 to each team (standard voting rules)

Team Red votes like this:
A votes: 3 to Blue, 2 to Green, 5 to Black
B votes: 5 to Green, 5 to Black
C votes: 4 to Blue, 4 to Green, 2 to Black
Total for Red: 7 to Blue, 11 to Green, 12 to Black
Voints from team Red: 2 to Black, 1 to Green

Team Blue votes likes this:
K votes: 4 to Red, 1 to Green, 5 to Black
L votes: 5 to Red, 5 to Green
M, N and O chooses not to vote.
Total for Blue: 9 to Red, 6 to Green, 5 to Black.
Voints from Blue: 2 to Red, 1 to Green.

Team Green votes like this:
R votes: 5 to Red, 5 to Black.
Total for Green: 5 to Red, 5 to Black.
Voints from Green: 1 to Red, 1 to Black.

Team Black votes like this:
X votes: 4 to Red, 4 to Blue, 2 to Green.
Z votes: 1 to Red, 4 to Blue, 5 to Green.
Total for Black: 5 to Red, 8 to Blue, 7 to Green.
Voints from Black: 2 to Blue, 1 to Green.

Total results from Team voting:

Red: 4
Blue: 2
Green: 2
Black: 3

These voints are then added directly with the voints from the non-team voters and the teams are then given points as per the table below.

Scoring will happen during rounds so that the scoring of round 1 will happens during round 2, scoring of round 2 happens during round 3, etc. Scoring will be shown in Google Docs to the public at any given time.

Once all of the votes are counted, each submission is ranked within its task and will earn points for the team that produced it according to the following table.

Place ~>
Round v
5th4th3rd2nd1st
Round 134567
Round 234567
Round 368101214
Round 468101214
Round 5912151821
Round 6912151821

Tasks are split into two categories: Basic and Combo. Combo tasks are like 2 (or more!) tasks merged into one, and each "sub-task" is voted on separately. You'll understand once you see one, don't worry.

Challenges
A team may, at any time, challenge another team to a contest they choose in any field of Brawl. They both have the remainder of the Round to complete the assignment. The community votes on the challenges the next voting phase. The winner gains 8 points and the loser loses 8 points. The challenged team may decline the challenge, in which case they forfeit 5 points. Teams may also issue combo challenges, in which they issue multiple tasks that work together and that are appropriate for multiple team members (such as a challenge to make a card for an Artist-Card Design combo). For these, each task is voted for individually and each award 8 points to the winner and the loser loses 8 points. A forfeit for a combo-task would still subtract 5 points. You cannot choose to accept only part of a combo-task. Each team can make one challenge (or one part of a combo challenge) for each of the 6 Tasks listed above.

Challenges are declared by PMing the Brawlmasters but not the challengee. Challengers will title the PM "BM-C [Challenge] [Challenging team]" before the Challenge timer ends in the current round. If the Brawlmasters approve the challenge, they will send the approval to the challenger and challengee. Both players must submit their finished work by the end of the round. Submissions will be voted on in the next voting round. If the challengee does not make a submission, they will have been considered as declining.

Each team may make up to 6 challenges in total.

Spoiler for example:
Artist A PMs the Brawlmasters he wants to challenge Artist B: They must make a drawing representing each others' Deckbuilders ideas from last round.
Before the next round starts, the Brawlmasters send a PM to both players that they accepted it and how it must be submitted. During that round, both players (or any team member) submit by PM the challenge submission with the title [Challenge] [Team A] [Team B]. The challenge submissions is revealed in the next voting phase. The one that takes more votes steals 8 points from the other team.

If the challenge is sent to the Brawlmasters after the timer has ended, it will take place in the following round.

Winner
The team that has the most points after all 6 rounds wins the event. All members of the team will receive a cool forum award icon and tons of respect. In the event of a tie, there will be a sudden death challenge for the Captains to determine the winner.

We appreciate feedback! If you have any ideas on how to improve the rules, please post it in the Suggestions and Feedback topic. Thank you!

Added example of team vote, made it mandatory for at leats 1 player per team to vote, and added what happens if two teams gets the same amount of votes from a team.

Am I allowed to send a challenge now, to be effective only in the last round? As a means to give both teams more time to complete the challenge.

You can send it to us as "preview", and tell us to show it to the other team if it is accepted, but you must send the actual challenge during the round you want to challenge.

Send it as a challenge to us now, but say in the PM "I do not want to use this challenge this round". Then, in the round you want to send the challege, send it to us again.
