Brawl #6 - Round 3 - Voting https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=64113.msg1256709#msg1256709

Time until voting for Round 3 ends:
Time's up!

How to vote
All you have to do to vote in Brawl #6 is to follow these four simple steps.
Note that unlike previous Brawls, Brawl participants are not allowed to vote.

1. Read
Read through all the submissions below to see what you actually want to vote for. Be sure to not accidentally miss one!

2. Decide
After reading, decide how you want to vote. Remember, you have 10 voting points ('voints') to split up between teams for each task. If you really like two of them but not the others, you could vote 5-5-0-0. Or if you have a clear ranking in mind, you could vote 4-3-2-1. Or split it up in any other way you want. The only limits is that you cannot give more than 5 voints to any one team, and you have to spend all 10 voints on each task you vote on. Any votes that do not fulfill these conditions will not be counted.

3. Vote
Use the form in the spoiler below to actually vote! If you are a member of the Voting Panel, you should definitely try to vote for each task, but if you are not, you can if you want decide to only vote for some tasks. You may submit some votes then come back later and submit the rest of them, if you want. You may also vote as many times as you like, but only the most recent will be valid.

Spoiler for Voting form:

4. Write
Write a post in this topic where you tell the rest of the community why you liked who you liked (Or why you didn't like who you didn't like). You have to give at least some reasoning for your vote on whatever team you gave the most voints, but feel free to give some feedback to all teams if you want! Be sure to not reveal your exact votes to anyone, to help avoid strategic voting. You are supposed to tell who you liked and why, but not how you spent your voints. This will however be revealed at the end of the voting, together with the totals to see who actually won!

Please note that in order for your vote to be valid, you MUST do step 4. If you don't, we will assume that your vote was submitted illegally by one of the Brawlers and it will be ignored.

In the event that you decide to change your vote, please ensure you do one of the following after submitting the form again: Send us a PM to notify us, or write a new post saying you changed your vote, or add a line about it in your explanation post. This is to confirm that it's really you who's voting.

If you have any questions about the voting procedure, don't hesitate to ask!

Feel free to scroll down to see the submissions for this round...

Butterfly Effect | COMBO TASK
Royalty: Create a card that represents a trap that the Dragon has placed to impede your progress!
Wizard: One of the members of your team falls into the trap. Explain how you could travel back in time and start a series of events to stop this from happening, using the butterfly effect!

Spoiler for The Tentacle's Grip:

Card Notes:
Damage dealt is equal to the number of skeletons in play. After activating, SP requires a death effect to become active again. Death effects caused by Skeleton Pit do not recharge it. Skeleton Pit does not stack effects (think having multiple eclipses or shards of patience). Affects both players, does not affect creatures that are not played from the hand (Ash from Phoenix, Firefly from FFQ, Skeleton from Skull shield/Boneyard, etc).
Where Are The Bones?
-A Tentacle's Grip Adventure
"Keep your wits about you. This city is damned."

Aves' membrane was trembling. He never had the same bravado of the more brawny battle-tentacles of The Grip. Why should he? He was a Wizard, and no self respecting wizard puts himself in harm's way if he can help it. So when his Emperor told him to keep his wits about him, his immediate response would have been that he'd rather keep his wits about a mile away, thanks very much.
Unfortunately he was also far too close to the Emperor to risk it.

They were slithering through the slums that lay at the base of the city, along the road that lead to the castle and more noble areas higher up. Progress was slow. Ash that still floated in the air kept sticking to their slimy bodies, making the tentacles feel gritty and uncomfortable. The slums themselves were charcoal. Aves thought that the shards of nondescript buildings looked like cracked bones sprouting from the skin of the earth, and... wait... bones...

"My Lord! Where are the bones?"

"Bones?"

"Yes, it may sound strange, but the fleshlings who lived here have a thing called a skeleton. Like a brittle frame on which their muscles grow."

"Ahh, like fish. Well, don't trouble yourself, my wise wizard. Perhaps dragons eat bones too."

But Aves was troubled. From his own experiments on scavenged drowned surface dwellers, the bones seemed too tough for even a dragon to enjoy. He nervously wiped ash off his top-sucker, and followed the team up the hill.

Being the crusader, rob77dp tended to lead the way in uncharted territory. Emperor JonathanCrazyJ was going in second, preferring to take a little more time to survey the environment, while his great mind assessed if there was anything worth plundering, subjugating, or otherwise claiming as his.
The wizard watched the noble crusader with a mixture of awe and derision. On the one tendril, it was quite impressive seeing how he cut his way through the landscape, occasionally thudding his axe into a scorched tree or stray dog that looked at him funnily. On the other, this brutal approach to exploration seemed rather heavy handed to Aves. What if that tree was rare, and could be saved once the city was theirs? Perhaps harvested for unique ingredients? What if that dog had been able to direct them and act as a guide? Aves had no idea whether dogs were capable of speech or not, but it seemed churlish to chop it in half before asking.

It was therefore no surprise to Aves when rob77dp charged over a ridge, and started screaming, loudly.

The Emperor reached the top of the ridge first.

"Tentacles! The bones! They are here! They live! Charge!"

The rest of The Grip slithered as fast as they could (almost at a mighty sea-snail's pace) down into the pit, while Aves stayed at the top of the hill and prepared to sling spells at the animated skeletons. Yet something strange was happening... as the skeletons crowded around the charging crusader, and each in turn tore another limb or sucker from his body, they then crumpled to the ground in a seated position, clutching their meaty prize. Once the rest of the team had reached the bottom, the skeletons were all silent once more, as if they had never risen to perform their grizzly task.

"What sorcery is this?" Espithel demanded of Aves. Wizards always seem to get shouted at for other people's wizardry.

"It seems the Dragon tried to bewitch the bones to act as defenders of the upper levels of the city... but magic like this requires fueling. I know not how, but whatever it is that fuels these cursed bones seems to have run out after they killed the first of us to reach them."

"If only we could go back and stop dear rob77dp from going first... I shall write a song about him." sobbed Krzysiekxd.

"Hang the damn song," rumbled the Emperor, "That tentacle was our best fighter! How could we have let this happen?"

Aves coughed and cleared his gills.

"Actually, sir, there is a way we can let it not have happened. Or rather, we can make something else have happened instead." The wizard was not quite sure which tense he should be using. "I have with me reagents for one Time-Rend spell. All we need do is step back an hour, and send another into the pit instead of rob."

Everyone stared at him.

"Send who?" The Emperor spoke slowly, choosing to gloss over the revelation his Wizard posessed the power of time travel. "We have not seen another living soul since we left the shore."

"There was a dog, before rob killed it. I was going to paint a picture with the blood..." uttered the bard, wistfully.

Aves smiled. He knew that dog could have been useful for something. He resolved to make a point to rob about this, once they will have had saved his life.

We were walking through the city, looking for clues as to where the dragon could be hiding, when we saw this flash of blue. Immediatly, our king turned on us. He slashed at a soldier, severely harming him, before our crusader managed to restrain him. After several days, he seemed better, but once released fled away, presumably to a group fighting for the dragon. At this point, it was obvious the spell wasn't going to dissipate any time soon, so after deliberation, we decided to use a spell we had spent time and energy to prepare before entering the city, a time travel spell.

Unfortunately, the trap was laid at a critical point in our exploration. We were discussing our options, when our options, when Amashi, one of our Bards, tripped onto the trap. Immediatly, she ran off in the distance. Knowing her personality, and how hard it is to leverage her true powers, we decided to see how it would play out.

A few days later, we were ambushed by a ragged team of humans, Amashi with them. Her hopelessly bad singing ruined their already low morale and we managed to capture all of them with no casualty. One of them was the mage that designed the trap. He told us everything horrible that happened after Amashi got mindswayed :

To begin with, she joined their camp. And her pet gull followed, that hellbird. As they were planning an attack on our group, the gull tried to take a bottle of beer from a soldier. He flailed, trying to grab it, and accidentally splashed a barrel of wine into the chimney. The resulting fire killed a few sleepers before it could be contained. In the mayhem, the bird managed to escape, sending papers all over the place as she flew near them.

They did not have time to recover them before the second incident. It came when the mage asked her what she could do. She told him that through her deity, she could summon a powerful ally, and that she would need all the corpses for it. Foolishly, they said why not. She arranged the bodies carefully, creating a gate and started chanting prayers to her mad god.

A giant demon, boar like, emerged from the circle. However, the fire had partially burnt the floor, and with the weight of the demon, it cracked, splitting the circle. But instead of attacking his summoner, knowing it would end the spell, it went on a rampage, ramming through papers, eagerly slaughtering scores of soldiers before the mage knocked Amashi out, sending the demon back to its realm as it was standing over their backpacks.

At this point, they were severely weakened. Some of them tried to push the point that the logical thing to do was to slaughter her and be done with it. But the mage had to reinforce his authority, prove his trap was worth something, and decided to find and attack our group, hoping to get to know why the hell we carried such a dangerous being with us. He thought that maybe she had untapped skill in battle, that she would demonstrate in the fight against her comrades. But, as said before, this ended very poorly for them.

He then informed us that letting her sleep a full night would undo the effects of the trap. We put her under a sleep spell, and he was right, she is back to her.. erm, normal self. Unfortunately, they had no information about the dragon's current location. They were just hired to keep the town clear of adventurers. But while searching their bags for supplies, we found a piece of paper, describing one of the dragon's minion, a gate closer, and which strategies would work best when he and his group joined them, happened to be in their backpacks. When asking around, the soldier wearing it said it was lying on his bag after the demon mayhem. With this, we will be better prepared in case we face the fiend.

I have to run through time itself, I have to warn the myself of the past that our King Mathman is going to fall into a terrible ambush led by the Red Dragon's minions! Here I am in the past, knocking at the door of my own tower and I will warn myself that our King is going to fell into Aurdinas' trap the 3rd day of the 2nd month. Knock, knock...

"Who is there?", Arthan of the past asked politely.
"It's you.", Arthan of the present replied.
"Me?", Arthan of the past said annoyed, but he opens the door anyways.
"Yes, you!", Arthan of the present continued.
"No, that's not possible. You are you and I am me!"
"No, you are me and I am you!"
"But how?"
"I am from the future!"
"What?"
"I have come to the past to warn you that Mathman is going to fell into Aurdinas' trap the 3rd day of the 2nd month."
"None of this make any sense, you are a Shapeshifter* who took my form, die!"
"Nooooooooo!"

Arthanasios from the future narrowly dodges the lightning attack thrown at him by his past self. He would be dead for sure if he hadn't mastered the very same spell ages ago and if he lacked the knowledge of how to avoid it.
Arthanasios from the past is prepared to cast a fireball, but this time his future self is ready; by casting the very same spell at the very same power level, the two fireballs collide and explode to the air safely, without harming anyone of the two.

"Listen to me damn it!", the cockatrice wizard from the future cried.
"You are just copying my moves, a Shapeshifter* can do that much...", the cockatrice wizard from the past replied, losing his politeness.
"And what about your Time Travel spell? That's not something a Shapeshifter* can possibly know...", the future cockatrice said, almost with sarcasm.
"What? But, but how?", the past cockatrice mumbled, widening his eyes.
"See?"
"I think I see you are telling the truth..."
"Finally! Was I always such a stupid cockatrice?"
"Hey! Stop insulting yourself!"
"Then focus and listen to me. King Mathman is going to fell into Aurdinas' ambush the 3rd day of the 2nd month."
"Aurdinas? The legendary mining city? But why?"
"It is a quest we have undertook to slay an evil Red Dragon. Long story... The thing you should know is that, in my future, the Red Dragon's forces has ambushed us within the city of Aurdinas by casting a terrible blinding light that blinded every member of our party and, during those chaotic moments, Mathman was kidnapped by the minions of the dragon and executed the next day!"
"That's awful and terrible! I see, I will keep note of it in order to save our fellow King from certain death! Anything else I must know about?"
"Yes, in order to dispel the Dragon's blinding trap you have to say these two words; Egeneto Skotos. I didn't knew these words back then but I know them now."
"Egeneto Skotos, I see..."
"Great! Now I have to go. The Time Travel spell's power is already dwindling."
"Farewell, my future self."
"Farewell, my past self."
, Arthanasios from the future vanishes into thin air and goes back to the present...

Arthanasios travels through time and space till he lands back to his previous present position...

"Welcome back!", a familiar figure greets the time traveler who have just returned to present time, safe and sound.
"Math! You, you are...", the stunned wizard said in a trembling voice.
"Alive? Yes, thanks to you.", the King Mathman smiled.
"And the blinding trap?"
"Deactivated!"
"The ambush?"
"Outwitted!"
"The Red Dragon's minions?"
"Defeated!"
"And, and now what?"
"Now, we have a dragon to slay! Come on, we have to catch up the rest of the group!"

The End(?)

*Shapeshifters are dangerous predators that mimic other creatures. See our Enchanter-Scribe combo task of round 2 for more details.

Spoiler for Pyrocloaks:
Spoiler for Ignite:

Time travel has always been one of the most complicated techniques to try to control. Change one wrong thing and you end up screwing yourself over. Furthermore, when you change something, you create a new world, exactly like the old one but with the change made. Normally a technique like this is forbidden, but there is a strange sense of selfishness surrounding it where any changes made don't change people in one timeline. Thus, anything that a wizard does relating to time is their own problem.

This has caused a negative stigma around time, where most people are too scared to change anything. However in a situation as dire as this, modifying time is necessary. Our leader, Zyardran, had been caught in a trap layed to protect the dragon. This trap caused flames to erupt from a turret like structure, burning her alive. Without a leader, we would be lost. Chaos would ensue and doubt would fill people's minds. They would question whether they are suited for the task, and many would flee. The dwindling numbers of those who stayed would die to the elements, and those who fled would be killed on the trip home.

Changing things improves my life, but not the lives of the people in this timeline. Unfortunately, nothing can save them now.

I can only change one thing. Any more, and I alter too much. 1 small change that I am able to make. A change to the route, a change to the scenery, a change to...
The weather.
The trap activated from a tripwire and the tripwire was concealed by the colouring of dead leaves and grass on the ground. A small gust of wind, caused by a simple magic spell, was enough to move a rain cloud from the east to where we were now. The rain itself didn't trigger the tripwire, but it did create water droplets on the wire itself. And the next morning, when we were to venture out, the morning sun reflected off the droplets present on the wire. In turn revealing the trap, and "saving" our leader.

It feels like I saved her, but I only saved myself. I jumped to a more favourable timeline for me so that I wouldn't have to deal with the outcomes of Zyardran's death.

Spoiler for Hidden:
New Unlikely Allies | BASIC TASK
As you prepare to attack some of the Dragon's minions, you hear a battlecry behind you. It's things you've never seen before, but they are here to help you fight!
Build an unupped deck in Cygnia. It must use at least 10 copies of cards that do not exist in Elements, and it must be able to beat Mages (the 2nd tier of AI enemy).

Spoiler for Super Secret Shadow Shielders Simply Standing Still:

Spoiler for Deck:
5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5de 5de 5de 5de 5de 5cb 5cb 5cb 5cb 5cb 5ci 5ci 5cj 5cj 5cj 5cj 5cj 5cj 5cc 5cc 5cc 5c6 5c6 5c6 8pn

Spoiler for Screens of play:

Spoiler for Strats:
The core strategy of the deck is to multiply the fungi by intentionally getting them killed with survival trait, which triples their numbers. For that to work, you have to make sure all the spores turned into fungi, though later in the game it can be correct to play it just like that to buff the other creatures you own. Having the lowest health Fungus lobotomized is a bit annoying here, doesn't often alter the strategy much though (sometimes it's poisoned/overdriven and bound to die in which case you may wait for its death), as you need to get rid of it for survival trait to work on other Fungi. Empathic bond capitalizes on the fact that this deck floods the board fairly quickly, rejuvenation is an allpurpose card. It can get rid of annoying abilities on creatures and permanents alike, too much cc on a stick, especially lobo effects can become a problem even though they may actually help you at first (lobo is never good for you). It can get rid of Wings and Dimensional shield, too; obviously both uses have the side effect of healing your opponent. Finally it can be used as basically a shard of gratitude, if you target one of the bigger Fungi that won't be sacrificed by future survival traits.
Fungi are amazing against singletarget CC, nightfall (they get buffed by it) and have an interesting interaction with skullshield (creating 2 spores and a skeleton).
Weaknesses are lobo effects and double AoE in a single turn. It's also possible to outrush it.

Spoiler for How i met your allies:
(from the point of view of the allies)
We heard of this dragon, terrorizing a distant land, and feared that it would turn to us once it finished ripping riches off of it. Thus, after public discussion, it was decided that it would be onto us to slaughter the beast. Since it was so far away, one of our mages opened a portal for us to cross and fight. However, the dragon was smarter. He got a being of extreme power, one that closes gates such as the one we were using. Four of us made it to the other side before the gate finished closing, and two were exterminated in the battle that ensued. Fortunately, we recovered some of their spores. These, being the ones that survived, are obviously more suited for the battles ahead, but versatility with your help would be a plus. Can we join strengths?

Spoiler for The Tentacle's Grip:
The Dry Rot Army

Key Cards5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5bs 5cc 5cc 5cc 5cc 5cc 5cc 5c6 5c6 5c6 5ij 5ij 5ij 5ij 5ij 5ij 5ig 5ig 5ig 8pp
Fungus
We met it in the forest to the south of the city. It called out to us in a high, rasping voice. It was damp, under the tree, and a single, brown, stinking thing looked up at us.
"I can aid you, wet ones. But you must help me spread my children. Draw the water from my flesh until I pass away. The powder of my spores will grow. Will grow. Will grow. They will grow you an army."

With the aid of dry spells and the Survival Traits, our creature slots quickly fill with Spores and Fungus, dealing steady, CC resistant damage to the opponent.
Dry Spell

We were thirsty, and could sense the moisture in the creature's body. We decided to accept its offer, and drew every last drop from its frail body.

Two of these triple your board presence whenever dropped, as well as acting as blanket mild CC against your opponent.
Survival Trait

This creature impressed us. Its will to pass on its genes, to allow its progeny to multiply at the cost of its own life appealed to our love of evolution. We ourselves had evolved from the mighty Kraken, no longer needing the bulk of a body, living as tentacles alone. This survival trait would help our army be ruthless in battle.

Save these for after at least one bout of dry-spell deaths, as giving fungus extra HP is counter productive. They are to be used as a second wave of multiplication after the first double dry spell, or in late game as a heavy burst.
Empathic Bond

Over time, we grew to like the little creatures, multiplying around us. Being boneless, slimy and cold, we felt a certain bond with them. And that bond only made us stronger.

Especially in mid-late game, this card represents excellent value, giving solid health regeneration allowing you time to finish filling the field.
Battle Log

Spoiler for Free Ranged Organized Guerilla Soldiers:
First off, the deck:

As you can see, it uses almost entirely cards nonexistent in Elements as we know it. The only "actual" non-pillar card is Nightfall. But why would Nightfall be present in an otherwise mono-life deck? Simple: Fungus, a 3/2, has the passive ability Nocturnal, allowing it be be buffed by Nightfall and Eclipse.
"But there's only 5 copies of Fungus!" That's where you're wrong. When a Fungus is killed, it leaves behind three Spores, 0/1 creatures that for one life quanta turn into Fungus. Spore is not only a token, but a playable card, of which we have four.

So Fungus dies, you get three more. Pretty good right? Eh, maybe not; we still have to make sure the Fungus dies!
That's where Survival Trait comes in. Our creature with the lowest power/toughness total dies, and every other creature we control get's +1/+1.

So we play a Fungus, kill it with survival trait, giving us three 1/2 Spores because Fungus' death effect happen before Survival trait's buff goes off. Our next turn, we can turn those Spores into Fungus, which unfortunately takes the Survival Trait buff off, but bigger is bigger and bigger is better!

Obviously, for our combo to work Survival Trait has to eat a Fungus and not a Spore, so it's important to turn all of your spores into Fungus before playing Survival Trait. This means that an opposing CC can be problematic, but it's not the end of the world to just lose a Spore to buff a load of other creatures, especially to potentially put them out of CC range. The addition of Cloaks can be very helpful in the regard, but unless your opponent is significantly faster than you are, them killing your Fungus is actually more beneficial for you in the long run.

Now that we've gone through the technical aspects of he deck, now to prove that it works.

Of those ten games, nine of them were wins, and the loss was very close. So I'd say the deck "stands a chance." against Mages.

Spoiler for Hidden:
Dragonfire | BASIC TASK
The breath of a dragon is so hot that it'll turn your troops to sticks of charcoal coated in the slush of their molten armor.
Write a scientific article detailing the design/creation of a new armor material that won't melt!

Spoiler for Super Secret Shadow Shielders Simply Standing Still:
Knowing we were going to have to face the dragon's breath at some point, our King Joey the First has appointed our court's wizard to create an armor that would be able to withstand such intense flames. I, on the other hand, was tasked with writing the details, so we could recreate the armors.

The first idea we had was to contact the dwarves. We have kept relatively good relations, and due to their working with molten metal, they were bound to have knowledge about what we could use to protect ourselves.

They showed us several samples of various, highly worked minerals, and demonstrated their properties in their giant forges. Immediatly, one of their materials, looking a lot like quartz, called our attention: they put it into one of their forges, one with dancing white flames. We could feel the heat from several meters away. After it spent 10 minutes in it, they carefully took it out and then to our disbelief grabbed it with their bare hands. There was no sign of it burning them in any way. At first only a few of us dared to touch it, but it didn't feel hot at all. They called it "light quartz". We do not know how they made it, but they ask a great price in magic items for it, meaning that the fabrication must be quite difficult. However, for dragonslaying, only the finest materials will do.

We immediately moved to testing the material. First, we designed a small shield, completely made of the stuff. We borrowed several Night Adders that were being used for fireshows by a local circus, put a big log on the ground, the shield on top, then had the adders spit fire at it. No burning at all on the log, promising.

We then proceeded to several other tests, revealing some flaws of light quartz. First, we tried wearing it, and it is rather stiff, not easily bent. Secondly, we tried slicing a small piece with a knife, and it is a bit too soft, being rent quite easily. If a small knife can tear through it this easily, they would be like butter to a dragon's claws.

Thus, we looked for a way to reinforce the material. First, we tried to simply make it cover a sheet of steel. However, this didn't solve the flexibility problem. Furthermore, rips through the layer of light quartz led to heat being able to penetrate through the steel. We had to get a new piece of wood. Obviously, we will also need to change the quartz that had been ripped through.

Our second attempt was to instead combine the light quartz with another material we used for our firefighter's clothing, a very fibrous material called asbestos. While it was pretty good at heat protection, it did not reach light quartz's level in that respect. However it had several desirable properties. By weaving it around the light quartz, we obtain a much more resistant material, as the fibers (partially) stop cut. Furthermore, we can pad the joints with it, further augmenting flexibility.

Hence we created a sample armor, completely covering the body. For the entrance, we decided on a simple set of buckles in the back. Several flaps would help cover this layer. One problem this raised was the lack of visibility. We added two eyeholes, with a special glass that was on the dwarves materials' list.

Then came the real test. A willing soldier donned the armor, and the adders spit fire. Overall, the soldier is fine, at least from the fire. However, there was little air inside the armor, and once closed, the soldier had only a few minutes of air supply.

We decided to create a small opening on the back (outside of blast range), easily closed or opened through a system of strings inside the suit. Pushing a switch inside the hand pulls a string, closing the opening, and pulling it pulls a string on the other side, opening it again. It did well in testing, easily used by the soldiers, little hot air getting in the suit, even when not knowing when the adders would blast The suit resisted a special test with a full blast from all sides, which left the room quite hot.

Overall, while bulky, this armor should protect us from the dragon. A shield, done in a similar fashion, can take the brunt force of the blasts. We advised the soldiers on how to get in the armor, closing the buckles so as to let the flaps overlap, the usage of the opening, and the weak points in the joints and the back, writing their comments in a manual for future use.

Spoiler for The Tentacle's Grip:
Concerning the Porous Hydrosteel Obsidian-Sponge Alloy

Dr. Philip Schneider
Brentham Academy, Frostkraken Empire

In recent years, it has become apparent that the might of the Imperial Army struggles most against forces which strike at the hydration necessary to the troops. Renowned strategist Fronk Weever believed that casualties at the volcanic Battle of Lesturias could have been mitigated by at least 30% if there had been a better way to keep the army supplied with water. [1]

Through the efforts of several faculty at Brentham Academy, a new material has been developed over the past months which will hold water but still serve as durable armor.
This metal's composition is similar to silksteel for its incorporation of iron and sponge, but rather than near-surface sponge, it uses specimens which have grown in the deepest known depths of the Empire - the volcanic trenches of the Fortian Currents in the Sothern Reach. The more water it holds, the more transparent the material becomes, though it quickly turns black as moisture is dispersed. Its durability is similar to that of silksteel, though it preserves little of the flexibility which characterizes the other alloy.

Testing involved both controlled and field experiments. First, the tests conducted at Brentham.

Quote
During the testing process, researchers in the application branch of the Academy brought in a sample population brigade for whom standard armor pieces were made.
The researchers' notes as well as the soldiers' notes indicated the following:
∙ A full set of armor, when completely saturated, holds 28±15%L of fluid..
∙ It can reasonably ablate boiling-level heat for 90 minutes with 95% confidence. [2]
∙ The released steam tends to hasten the movements of properly trained troops. [3][4]
∙ The soldiers prefer their own name for the material, 'Steamsteel', to the official name. [3]

The number of burns from fire were reduced 70%, and from acid by 30%, as compared to the control group. [5]

Quote
The field tests suggested that burns of both kinds could be reduced up to 90%, as well as the following.
∙ Depending on amount of combat, armor may need to be re-soaked every 1 to 4 days.
∙ Could raise morale by averting dryness on the march.
∙ Jealousy levels in an army when selected members receive new equipment fall within the range 35-65%.

One particular case study is in the case of Lawrence Bathay. He was selected for the new armor but captured on a raid of the nearby Ignis Mountains.
An anonymous observer aware of this project described the following:
"Though he was taken and questioned, he did not give up anythng[sic]. Then...the poor guy was tortured. They grilled him, but as the steam started spilling out he taunted, 'Might want to turn me over, guess I'm done on this side.' Eventually the armor bled dry under the intense heat, and now he's calamari, but...it kept him alive at least a little longer." [6]

The researchers on the project agreed that this constituted a qualified success of the field testing.

Production and supplying of the material to forces in the field is expected to begin in the following weeks.

[2] Fred Knooser, Thermodynamics & You, 5th Edition.
[3] Notes of an anonymous soldier in the prototyping program.
[4] Work has begun on incorporating the speed and power seemingly granted by this technology in motorized, enchanted war vehicles. The project has been nicknamed "Project Steam Machine".

Spoiler for Free Ranged Organized Guerilla Soldiers:
BREAKING NEWS
Scientists working in the great city of Aurdinas have discovered a new material that is resistant to even the highest temperatures. This new element, called fratudium by its founders, will prove to be incredibly useful in coming events.
Working in unison with multiple blacksmiths, a new form of armour has been developed that will protect its wearer from even the most devastating attack a dragon can manage, its breath. This armour is able to withstand heat up to 4000°C, temperatures exceeding that of an average dragons fire.
Not only is fratudium armour safe, but it is also lightweight and easily portable. Engineers are currently working on a way to craft fatudium armour that can be transformed into a small device worn on the wrist, that can be opened with just two fingers.
Originally mined in the darkest caves by only the fumed-hooded dwarves, fratudium minerals are very translucent and hard to find due to their shape and size. Most beings cannot tell the difference between the average piece of fratudium and a chunk of average quartz, but the fume-hooded dwarves are a race that has mined this stuff for over 32 eons and only the oldest beings of this race can spot the true differences held within the fratudium.
Experimentation has shown that fratudium has a hardness of 18 on the Mohs hardness scale, thus being resistant to that of dragon fangs and talons(both ranking 14 on the Mohs hardness scale). This provides enough resistance to the armour to not worry about being struck from physical forms of attack from the dragon.
Being extremely ductile the fratudium can be easily molded to the desired shape of the warriors for stitching together to create the battle armour suit. Each piece of individual fratudium is hammered into 38mm sheets each with a thickness ranging from 3mm to 8mm depending on the individuals own body mass. The individual sheets of fratudium are all stitched with micro-welding joints, from fires hotter then hell, so that it may properly stick together while giving enough air-flow and movement room for each of the individuals wearing the battle amour.

Spoiler for Pyrocloaks:
While we prepared for the dragon fight, our top metallurgists and alchemists were at work creating armor which we could use against the dragon that threatened Aurdinas. We harvested the plentiful amount of diamond created by pressure in the Before-world, where asteroids bombarded the lands of Elementia. These diamonds, which could be molded sparingly, would fit as armor, but there was one problem: diamonds were a conductor of heat. Since the diamonds would burn us alive if the dragon were to bring fire to the fight, we would need an insulator.
For an insulator, Alchemists turned to Basilisk Blood and Liquid Adhesive for a coolant and insulator. The Basilisk Blood and Liquid Adhesive would be super-cooled right above freezing temperature, ready for connection with a solid, allowing it to be woven with fibers. The solid insulator is an organic plastic that comes off the skin of Polyeng Mith-Mith plants, known as Gcunma (goon-mah) Plastic. The plastic is supposed to protect the plant from intense heat and trap in transpiration for later use, both of which it does a good job. The plastics are then molded to take the shape of the armor and mixed with Basilisk Blood to bind the plastic together. Lastly, the fibers, a mixture of polyester and steel wool, are woven especially tight, mostly around the biceps, elbows, chest, waist, thighs, knees, and neck.
The diamond will shield the wearer from the slashing, stabbing, or any other pressure the armor could take, whereas some of the heat is transferred to the insulation department of the armor. The insulation, filled with a mixture of Basilisk Blood and the molded plastics, will filter out and trap the heat inside. The surrounding air will then cool off the armor for more use. The point at which the armor stops working is slightly less than the melting point of diamond, at 3,248 degrees C, as it was glowing at a yellowish-white right before melting.

Bard/Enchanter

TG: The thing depicted in the art looks more like an eldritch abomination that will eat away at my sanity if I stare at it for too long. I don't know how to feel about that. The unupped looks far more balanced. I don't know, the upped looks too restrictive, though it is a two-edged blade thing (and maybe the only thing that will really get hurt is having card advantage from extra drawing).
Piro: Art was decent. Not spectacular, but also not crap. Unupped ability feels overpriced when compared with parasite. Even putting that aside, this is still just a parasite that actually has good stats.
FROGS: Art shows more effort than you put in previous rounds, fabian. Cookie points for you. Balance feels good, but it is a bit of a niche card (something that ocurred to me, do the effects of multiple of these stack?)
S7: No comments on that art. The card feels pretty OP, as it single handedly locks tons of decks (could be mitigated with some changes, but the whole concept is OP imo)

Sader

With the exception of Pirocloacks everyone picked Fungus + Survival Trait (:life is totally not OP in cygnia), with slightly different takes on the concept.

Royalty/Wiz

TG: The story was good. A bit on the serious side compared to the others. The card is something that has shown up some times in CIA iirc.
P: The story fell short compared to the others. The card is not balanced at all
S7: In comparison, an original solution to the problem of getting around the trap. I liked the card concept. It's not as strong as it sounds as you can play around it (it ends up working as more less a PC-susceptible AM in most cases)
F: Funny story, and an alright card (different than most "blindness" cards I've seen before in the CIA)

Scribe:

S7 and TG sounded the more legit imo

Spoiler for royalty:
I'll read the stories going along later, but about the cards.
I fail to see how Ignite is a trap.
Skeleton pit is something I have seen often in the past.
FROGS' submission I really love, though. Good job.
Spoiler for enchanter:
I might be too tired, but I'm not sure I understand Hellhound. Is it 1 instant damage then 1 damage every turn infect-style but without the poison counter?
Night carrier is straight out not creative.
Vicious Ooze sounds really op to me, but the idea is interesting.
Spoiler for bard:
I really love the ooze's art.
Spoiler for crusader:
nothing much to say here.
I will read and comment scribe/wizard later.
Spoiler for wizard:
FROGS seems a bit childish, which isn't bad in and of itself, but along with the fact I could spot a few mistakes kind of threw me off.
TTG I really would have loved if the dog had been mentionned first, now it just look like it was added at the very end to add sense to the story.
Pyrocloaks I like the selfishness from the wizard, this probably would have gotten most points out of our enemies if I could vote.
Spoiler for scribe:
TTG's submission is definitely my favorite out of the ones from the other teams.

Ok, actually doing this properly this time.  I will attempt to say both a positive thing and a negative thing about each submission.

Royal Wizard
CD
The Tentacle's Grip: This seems overpowered at first glance, but you put a lot of effort into balancing it.  I still probably would have costed it a little higher, but on the whole it's a nice card.
Ss: Any card that autowins against my Instosis deck automatically loses a point or two.  This is like a more poorly balanced version of Tentacle's card.  In the right situation it's totally game breaking but against some decks it's useless.  Maybe if it lasted one turn or something like that? Stealing cards is hard to balance and generally isn't done for that reason.
Free Ranged: I feel like I've seen similar cards before...  The effect is interesting enough, but totally shuts down a good number of decks.  Maybe those decks need shutting down though.
Pyrocloaks: Wow... no.  Sorry but why?  :fire already has plenty of removal and two cards that increase damage off of scaling.  You didn't even limit it to :fire quanta...
Writer
Gonna skip writer for now, will try to come back for it tomorrow.

Enchanter
Tentacle: Wow that's an interesting one... I definitely like the unupped.  The upped I'm iffy on though.  If you had made it non-pillar permanent it would have been a shoe in, but limiting people to one per turn is too harsh.
The art is awespme though the claw is standing out in kind of an odd way.
Free Ranged: Super miniony and a very interesting effect.  Not too strong, but not to be discounted either.  I like the look of the art, but doesn't feel quite elementsy to me.
Pyrocloaks:Fire could use a nice slow burn creature killer like this, and the ability is on a solid enough body.  The art is an interesting style, don't think I've ever seen anything like it before.
SsAn interesting ability.  I worry about it being hard to track (I imagine marking the target but what if it dies?).  Liking the cute art.

Crusader
I've never Cygniaed, not even gonna try to judge thsi one.

Will attempt this one tomorrow as well though it's not my area.

The art is awespme though the claw is standing out in kind of an odd way.

The rationale is by the time you have six entropy out, (Second or third turn) your opponent will have emptied their hand of their starting pillars, as they only need one turn to do so. To really power this out on the first turn, which is the only turn I'd consider the denial element relevant, you have to sacrifice tons of card slots to pillars, weakening any beatdown you had in mind.

Also, it's not a claw, but purple smoke; the dragon is breathing the ooze to life.

Here comes my votes:

Royalty
TTG and S7 has the most interesting cards here. S7's is basically lightning+PU (ish) but opponent can pick which of his creatures that gets hit. Potentially very strong, but also has the potential of being weak, depending on what you face. I made a similar card last Brawl, but it was a creature that stole permanents instead, and it was a bit cheaper than this. This card might be slightly too expensive, but on the other hand against a deck with few creatures it's very strong (but so is lightning I guess, which is even cheaper). TTG has an interesting effect, a bit similar to OETG's spell card Command Skeletons (summon a skeleton, all skeletons attack target). This also has a similar effect to TTG's card (kill/damage creatures that enters field), and likewise it means that opponent can choose what to lose. On the other hand this is reusable, and it requires skeletons. It's basically a forced combo with boneyard, and potentially a strong combo, since this cards feeds boneyard with deaths and boneyard feeds this with skeletons. I like it, but the combo is a bit too forced for it to win this.
Winner: S7

Wizard
Pyrocloaks is the only one with an actual butterfly effect, other than that I liked TTG's story best.
WInner: Pyrocloak

Enchanter
S7's card fees very interesting. Against some decks it would be very weak, but versus others it could be absolutely devastating. Since you can only target one creature at a time it introduces some new strategic decisions, which is nice.
Pyrocloak's card reminds me heavily of a card my team made in Brawl 2. Samen name and theme, and also a damaging ability, same elements too. 0 points for not having creativity and just stealing ideas. Nah ,jk :P The card is a decent mid-hitter, but fire already has very powerful mid-hitters with phoenix and lava golem. Ability also seems a bit unneeded in fire which already has a lot of damage capabilities. But I still like the theme of the card.
FROGS's card is somewhat simple, but still cool. It does have forced combo with dragons, but that is of course very fitting in this task. 2 dragons is essentially just a +1/+1 per turn, which isn't that good. You need at least 3 dragons out to really make this card great, so a duo would be a good choice to use this card. Forced combo is usually bad, but since there is a dragon in each element there are still a lot of options to use this, so still a good card imo.
TTG's card honestly doesn't seem super-good at first glance, since you are limiting your own spell casts as well. Of course if you use this you probably will have few or none spells in your deck, but that is still limiting your deck capabilities. Granted, your deck will be more prepared than your opponent's. It's a card that slows down several other decks, like heavy control decks or fractal decks. Its stats feels a bit weak for a card that could be situational, very much like S7's card.
Winner: TTG wins barely because it has a cool mechanic, but all cards were good.

Bard
S7's card is very meh, But I really like all remaining ones, even if they all have different style really. FROGS get my vote because I'm a fan of the "mysterious hooded guy"-concept.
Winner: FROGS

Crusader
Pyrocloak is the most different one, the others are basically based on the same idea. Of those three, I like FROGS best because of the nightfall usage.
Winner: Pyrocloak and FROGS

Scribe
I very much liked the style of TTG's submission. S7's style of describing the process of how they made it was nice too.
Winner: TTG

Here are my votes for Round 3. Between Wizard and Enchanter I did not have access to a shift key, so apologies in advance for the nonstop grammatical errors.

Spoiler for Royalty + Wizard:

Spoiler for Royalty:
TTG: Seems like a very specific CC for a very specific situation. There's also not a lot of advantage to playing it yourself, as it would attack your creatures as much as it would attack your opponents.

S7: I like this card, and it synergises well with Mindgate (albeit maybe a bit too well). Personally I think it would be better suited to the Shield slot, but still single-use. This was the winner for me.

FROGS: I'm unsure how well this mechanic would fit into the game.

PC: Very powerful AoE card, especially in a rainbow deck. However, the card specifies that X damage is dealt in total without explaining how it's distributed.

Spoiler for wizard:
ttg; as always i love the continual references to how different tentacular life is - in this case the confusion at the existence of bones. what i was less a fan of is how the actual time travel part of the story occupied maybe 2 lines, and there was no butterfly effect. to me it seemed a little unfinished.

s7; it actually took me a few read-throughs to work out where you'd actually used the butterfly effect. turns out that you hadn't, and the time travel part was at the beginning of the story and rather understated. having said that, the story was enjoyable although the note at the end threw me off a little.

f.r.o.g.s.; again, almost nothing of the butterfly effect, and i didn't like all the unnecessary formatting. however i did appreciate past-arth's paranoia and the character building between the two.

pc; finally, the butterfly effect! a gust of wind moves a cloud which moves the rain which creates water on the wire which makes it visible. while the overall effect isn't very exciting, it's the best from any of the submissions. additionally, the prose concerning the nature of time travel was absolutely beautiful and in melancholy contrast to, for example, f.r.o.g.s.'s very jolly updates from king mathman at the end of the story. pyrocloaks' submission was by far my favourite, and it also followed the task the best.

Spoiler for bard / enchanter:
i'll be doing enchanter first, and seeing how well the art matches the card afterwards.

Spoiler for enchanter:
ttg; no no no no no no..... so many decks broken! i don't see this fitting anywhere into the game, and given that it affects both teams so far as i can tell i feel that this minion is more detrimental than a powerful ally.

f.r.o.g.s.; this card is the perfect ally to a dragon, though i don't see it lasting very long in a fight! i do appreciate the idea of a more sacrificial minion than an outright ally, however.

pc; the card is of reasonable power and the effect is damage plus poison. i'd call that pretty powerful, definitely a good minion, however the idea itself seemed a little uninspired. the description was also a little too meta for my liking.
note that the grammatically correct form for 'le small dog' is 'le smöl pupper'

s7; like ttg's submission i see this card as something that could break many decks, however, it also feels like something that could have very much changed the meta if added to the game early in its development. i'm unsure how powerful a minion it could make, however.

i was unsure which submission to choose as best, and in the end i went for the criteria set out in my originial 'submission preferences' post which emphasised versatility. i ended up choosing s7 for this.

Spoiler for Bard:
TTG: I did initially think the white thing was a claw, and having read Espithel's response to this, I argue that he should have accounted for the image downsizing.

FROGS: The generic cloaked figure on a white background looked like it was ripped straight out of a colouring book. Despite a small amount of effort I wasn't able to find any evidence of this. While the quality of the outline is good, the colours that between them seem a little low-budget.

PC: I would've like PC to break out of their style, but oh well. With the gradients and background this was still the highest-quality submission.

S7: I have no clue what's happening in this image.

Spoiler for Crusader:
Very few of you were familiar with Cygnia, so I based my ranking on who seemed to put the most effort into learning how to use it. A good example of this was evidence that the deck was actually used.
PC do not appear to have finished this task, which doesn't look good. All of the other submissions provided usage examples.
Of the the remaining three, you all went for pretty much the same deck, which I found disappointing. But oh well!
As such it was a very difficult choice to choose between those that remaining. In the end I picked TTG, for the lore - but only just.

Spoiler for Scribe:
First, I scanned each submission to see which was most technical. S7 presented a diary entry, TTG something more scientific, FROGS a newspaper article, and PC a combination of the above.

S7: This submission immediately struck me as a little odd. It didn't have any of the technical precision I was looking for, and just seemed inaccurate. While I'm willing to believe that such a crystal is able to insulate heat so effectively, I don't believe that testing to see how flexible it is is a worthy use of time. The solutions presented to various issues seemed unreliable.

TTG: This submission had the scientific nature I was looking for. It was full of data and numbers, just what I wanted, even going so far as to quote sources. My only complaint would be the subjectivity of "Jealousy levels", but this was the winning submission for me.

FROGS: I read this one in the context of a new article to be presented to /  read by the general public. Some things seemed a little rushed, and it could have done with a proofread. There were also a few numbers, which implied technical accuracy, but it wasn't enough. For example, "heat up to 4000°C" is one significant figure and a very inaccurate measurement, "hammered into 38mm sheets" tells me nothing, and "fires hotter then hell" was extremely subjective - perhaps sutiable in a news report, but not a scientific article. The submission kind of half-filled both mediums but perfected neither.

PC: Diamond does indeed conduct heat very well, and despite studying chemistry myself I had to look it up to confirm it. Someone who is aware of this information would surely be able to write a more technical piece of prose. The submission was full of oddites, such as things like "trap in transpiration for later use" and a lot processes both in the manufacture and use of the armour that go completely unexplained. I was also unsure of the relevance of the plant - initially I thought it was the "fibers", but this was later confirmed to be a mixture of polyester and steel wool.

Blame picture compression when stuffed into cardframes q.q
Spoiler for Hidden:

I actually meant that white bit at the end of the arm which is apparently teeth from the dragon?  Or is the dragon the other teeth in the center?  In any case, it looks cool.

@ CO: About scribe: The material we get from the dwarves is inspired by LI-900, which has those weaknesses and understandably doesnt make the greatest armor on its own. Don't you think your soldiers should be able to move and breath and maybe just maybe survive the first time they get struck by claws? About the precision; I think we are in late medieval times with magic and some advanced species and as such I dont think accurate measurements for extreme heat are possible yet, unless we get  sth from the dwarves that does that.
The imperfect solutions are due to us trying to be realistic, if we had a material that perfectly protects all of the body without drawbacks, we'd just make the whole armor of it and that would be boring.
