Title: New Chat
Post by: Higurashi on April 08, 2012, 08:18:11 pm
Internet Relay Chat

Due to lacking ad revenue, we can't keep the old blab chat up. Therefore, we've moved to the chat protocol IRC. It's 100% free and I have 100% control on the network we're on.
The channel in question is #elementsthegame on irc.ext3.net, a Network I'm Oper on. We're also using #etgtournaments on the same network for tournaments and chat games.

What is IRC?
Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is an old protocol for online chatting. It was created in 1988, only one month after my birth in fact.

'Client software is available for every major operating system that supports Internet access. As of April 2011, the top 100 IRC networks served more than half a million users at a time, with hundreds of thousands of channels operating on a total of roughly 1,500 servers out of roughly 3,200 servers worldwide.' - Wikipedia

IRC structure is composed of Networks, servers and channels. You connect to the servers on the network and you chat in the channels. Anyone can create a channel just by joining it on IRC. In fact, there is a plethora of powerful commands available for every user. Here's a fine FAQ that I can recommend, especially the IRC Tutorial on this page: http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/faq.html

However, that only covers basic IRC commands. A lot of what you as a normal user can do is associated with the Services on the network. These are server-side bots that present most of the service you'll ever need on a network. The normal Services are NickServ and ChanServ, and they handle exactly what they're named after. With NickServ you can register your nickname so that no one else can steal it, and ChanServ keeps channel security constant and can set flags on your own channel for more customisation. You can check what they can do at any time with the /ns help or
/cs help commands.

On ext3, we also have HostServ, which can change your hostmask appearance if you ask it nicely. We also have other bots, and it's easy to create your own ones as well. For instance, maybe you want a Mafia bot for playing Mafia in the tournament room. It's easy to download a template and run it for your friends. The possibilities of IRC are nigh endless. Just use your google-fu, young one.

I kinda like it. Shame the old chat is gone, but this will do for now.

okay I seriously need a tutorial on how to set this up.
Honestly, I'm no new to computers, but as of now, being unable to use this chat prohibits me from entering tourneys and events, as well as general chatting.
I don't think I'm alone with this problem.

- Prioviding an actual clickable  link would be great.

- I *think* I managed to get to a website where I just simply have to enter a nickname and click on connect(I *think* it is the correct website, but I don't know for sure since you didn't provide a link or an URL), but the thing in the pop-up window never connects for me.

Thankyou.

Here's a link: http://elementscommunity.org/chat/

This is on the top of the forums, in the same bar as the home, game, etc, and I think the link in-game goes to it now as well.

IRC is pretty simple to use and has a lot of options for regular users. The help link Higs gave is really useful and refreshed everything I learned on freenode (another irc network) and then some. I'd imagine it'd be even more useful for people not used to IRC.

IRC is pretty simple to use in the elements chat room lol, my first encounter with IRC was about 8 years ago, and that was using the client and trying to navigate to the chatroom I wanted then logging in and the rest was a nightmare!  I pretty much swore off using IRC that day, but it seems to be popping up again all over the place :(
Still free chat is better than no chat!

If that link worked, I would never have asked for a link in the first place.
That link does nothing for me all the time, so I just assumed it points to the old chat or something.

No, it goes to the new one. If it's not working for you (I have this issue right now because I'm using a school computer) the LAN you're using might have a proxy on it. Other than that I have no idea.

Yeah I have the exact same problem while I'm on campus because the firewall won't allow any connections to pass through.  Works fine at home, just not there.

I'm fine with the new chat, even though my university's internet system apparently isn't. For those of us new to IRC chat, here are some useful commands:

/me
Posts something as an action. For example, /me eats bologna would become:

* mesaprotector eats bologna

/nick
Changes your nickname. Don't overuse it or impersonate another user. Can be pretty fun though. For example, /nick goomba would become:

== mesaprotector has changed nick to goomba

/notice
Sends someone a PM, without opening a new window. For example, /notice Nietzsche Existence is pointless. would send a message to Nietzsche which would appear as:

 -mesaprotector- Existence is pointless.

!ping
Checks if you're connected to the network. If you are, you should see this message:

-ChanServ- Pong!

Only one thing is missing: ability to ignore users.
/ignore *name* doesn't work. And since some people told me this, i assumed that it somehow could work. Confirmation, please.
(also on how to properly ignore user)

Confirmed. Can we implement this function, please? I believe it's possible as I've seen the mods on this chat give a few brief mentions of it.

Odd.  I guess it's a client related issue then; mIRC accepts /ignore username as a command just fine.

Unless it's an oper privilege...which I don't see why it would.

There is no ignore standard for IRC (which makes sense); ignore functionality is implemented client-side.

I don't think our web client has one. I'd like to make a better web client when I have the spare time though, which could be never.

We don't exactly have a 'register' option, but you can make your nickname 'unique' (aka preventing others from swiping it) by using Nickserv (http://www.technerd.net/nickserv.html).

New chat sometimes autoscrolls and sometimes it does not.  I thought I was the only one having this problem but kev had the same thing.  IRC Gods, please tell how to fix this.

I'm using Google Chrome and no client, just clicking on the chat link.

For future reference:

When in chat with your name, type:

/msg NickServ REGISTER *password* *email-address*

This.

I believe it happens only when your screen has gotten a certain amount of messages. Using /clear seems to solve it for me.

What don't you like about it? If it's the interface colors, which was a major issue for some, that's really easy to change. If it's something else, I'd recommend finding an irc client that can fix that problem.

I asked this in chat and someone told me that clicking on the channel tab fixes this (the #elementsthegame tab); a line should appear under the latest comment and it should autoscroll again. This 'problem' seems to occur after you scroll.

That's certainly part of it, I probably wont be on that chat again anytime soon but how do you change colors?

In the top left there's a blue button that says Menu. Click that, select Options, and there's three color sliders for different things.

Yep. I type in my password and hit enter like normal, but it goes instantaneously to this:

[00:55] qwebirc v0.90
[00:55] Copyright (C) 2008-2010 Chris Porter and the qwebirc project.
[00:55] http://www.qwebirc.org

[00:55] == *** (qwebirc) Looking up your hostname...
[00:55] == *** (qwebirc) Found your hostname.
[00:55] == Disconnected from server: Connection to IRC server failed.

And then proceeds to do nothing for a length of time I'd assume is indefinite :F

I'm in the temporary mibbit, which seems to not be registered anymore, so I don't advise using it.

Services and the webchat are down. Seems to be a problem with linode servers, our providers. I've contacted the network Admin, and it should be resolved within the day. Linode have always been very fast at fixing hiccups.

Y'all can still connect with a real client. www.mIRC.com, for instance.

ext3 is not down, nor was it before. You can connect with a normal client to irc.ext3.net (specific servers might not direct properly). Webchat went down with services, just like earlier today. Being resolved.

If irc.ext3.net doesn't work, try apocalypse.ext3.net

Have a nick already.
