Title: Want to become a DJ and have a live show/podcast on Elements Radio?
Post by: Scaredgirl on February 21, 2010, 09:02:57 am
This is something I was planning on doing later, after radio BETA was over, but because FrostBevis already started doing his Elements podcast, I guess we have to start this phase right now and just see what happens. :)

The goal is to have a bunch of prerecorded weekly podcast shows plus one weekly LIVE PvP tournament show on Saturday.

You need to have:

- average or good microphone
- prerecorded show (about 1 hour), with new episodes coming out monthly or weekly (you will get your own time slot)
- experience on these types of things would be nice but not required
- professional attitude to the whole thing (no "lolz I'm on teh radio!")

You can do your show solo, but having two people on at the same time would be even better. You can achieve this by having guests or having a "sidekick".

During your show, you can also play royalty-free music if you want. If you don't know where to look for those, PM me and I'll give you some good links. You can also play any of the songs already uploaded on our servers.

All DJ's get a cool custom title!

Anyone who is interested, post on this thread or PM me. Your chances of getting on air are about 99% because I want to give everyone a chance.

So what are you waiting for? Become a DJ today!

Cool let me know when you think of something.

Here are some ideas I just pulled out of my.. hat:

"Noob Tutorial Show"
"Ask of Pro"
"Card of the Week"
"Deck of the Week"
etc.

I've thought about something where we read the meiaanings of the community to a card of the week and discuss it in a show, but I don't know how to do it prerecored, because there is no one neary me that play it. Maybe I'll give it a try, even I have no micro and have to use my MP3 player to record my  voice.

If you want to have a show with guests, you can simply set up a Skype connection and record the conversation.

There are a bunch of free podcasting software that can help you to organize the whole thing.

Thanks guys.

Ok, lets do it like this. Anyone who wants to become the next super DJ, you have two choices:

1. Your own 30-60 minute pilot show
(for people with experience in radio/podcasting)

2. You do a segment on FrostBevis' show (for people with less experience and/or not much material)

PM me your ideas and I'll give you a spot on the radio.

Sure. PM me (or use the mod forum) and we'll make it happen.

Btw I don't know if you aware of this but Prince_Of_Streetrats was talking about asking you to maybe do a show with him. I'll let you two decide on that. It's always possible to have your own show AND be a guest at some other show.

I should probably start a new private forum section for all the DJ's and wannabe DJ's.

Yes, I'm intersted in this podcast, but I'm too much crazy to be in a online radio show.
I will submit some materials to this wanna be DJ thing to see what happen (or no).

SG, great idea again.

Yeah, That's right. I was only wanting to do it bi-monthy at most though. Jmizz you can just do it once a week if you'd like and have me as a guest every other time or something, and we could go from there. Whatever works... PM me.

A live commentation on tourneys!
this would be impossible. you can only do one match at a time....

would be cool to maybe do the final match..... but the tournies here are big, with 10-30 people. by the time you do one match, 7 are over, making you miss almost the entire tournament.

That's no problem you than pick out some matches of every round. Where is the problem. Nobody said, that every match has to be casted.

with the spectator mode... i still see little importance to even podcast live matches.... they technically are already podcasted for you to watch, never mind have live commentary to listen to one, when you can watch all of them... or at least alot more than you could listen to.

your simply suggesting doing something on a medium that is already being done on another medium.

live commentary on the tourny itself... who wins, who loses, what rounds, and a summery of it all..... that would be possible. and noteworthy. but simply putting on air, what you can already see, is ... iunno. mundane?
Title: Re: Want to become a DJ and have a live show/podcast on Elements Radio?
Post by: Ohmega on April 16, 2010, 01:48:13 pm
Have you ever seen a live cast of a videogame? There you see the game and have commentares of what they are doing and what strategis they could have.
In Elements you can watch the battle and hear the guys talking of the strategies or you can just listen the cast and hear how the match is going on and what strategy they use.

again a decent point. however this is a single channel radio. if there were different channels, or if say you went into the tournament channel and it played the commentary, while chat played music, this idea would work because it wouldnt be forcing people to listen to it. but in the chat, they tell you who is fighting who, so you can enter the names and watch... i usually do watch some select people every week if i can.

but forcing people to listen to commentary when they can just watch the match, without any other alternative, is again, mundane... even if its royalty free music ;X

I think that some of the matches should be recorded, and be done commentary on, and put out, and the podcast could cover those, as well as having experienced players talking about decks, strategies, opponents, cards etcetc.

I would love to have a music only show ^^

i mean, it would be mean if entropy missed a whole hour of music because someone wanted to talk about a 94/8 anubis....... don't you think?
so....... when will there be shows?

are you were are you going to put the episodes
when other people are done making them?

(i can't do any shows but you could talk about:

1.Elements of the week/Month
you pick an elements for say a month and you
talk about cards from that element.
you could do them in this order:
     :darkness         :water
     :death         :life
     :earth         :aether
     :fire         :air
     :gravity         :entropy
     :time         :light

2.Tournament announcing
yea you could announce the tornements while there going
on you can say who's winning and you could wath some
matchs and talk about it.
watch them at: http://www.elementsthegame.com/spectate

3.War anouncing
you could also anounce the wars and watch the games
and anounce the matchs (try not to talk about "The Game" because some
listeners might know about the game[i lost the game])

let me know what your gonna do with th episodes  :)
pm me it

Wow, I just now noticed you said this.   :)

Anyway, it depends.  I am experienced, but only on Youtube videos.  Assuming the show repeats hourly so I only need to record a one hour deal every week, I may consider it.

The key word is may.

EDIT:  By the way, is the radio show even going on anymore?

EDIT:  By the way, is the radio show even going on anymore?
Radio project is kind of on a pause at the moment, mainly because all our previous DJ's have bailed out. Seems like the project was bigger than they anticipated so they folded.

I think what we need now is to forget any live stuff, and just do regular 1-hour or 30-minute podcasts. And instead of having a 24/7 radio playing non-stop, we would put that weekly podcast as play-on-demand. We could have the podcast player in Elements Chat. So when I join I the chat, I can click the button and listen to the most recent podcast.

This kind of simple system would be a good start I think. We could then make it bigger later if we wanted to.

I still like the idea of a casting a game. MAybe a game of the week with some of the good players or verx exiting games.
Maybe 2 games er cast, if one game isn't too long.
But not simple, oh he played that card now his opponent is dead. I think of:
Hm, he played Chimera now his opponent is in trouble, wait what? He played freeze and sonic, what a great counter. Opponent A will need some time to recover from this lost.
Or soemthing like this.
I would like something liek this, even that I'm no more active playing...
Probably I could make some pods, but I'm not sure, if everyone could understand me, and if I have the time for it.

I think it's a good idea to make Radio-On-Demand. It's easier to make, and no one would care cuz' no one listens 24/7.

Yeah I was really surprised to see there were radio plans here. Just consider the typical local radio/tv channel. They have a whole building, and still it's mostly a few news pages that keep repeating. Maybe later in the day there'll be a few short programs.

How do you get content, and is there any need for it? We all have our channel for our fav. music, so why compete with that. You can just start with a small, weekly show, say around 20 mins. Multiple people can make it, but there'd be one editor. It would be a bit like all those poker programs you see, except about elements. Record it, be it video or audio only, and put it online somewhere. Post the link here and everybody is happy.

If I were to do this, I would probably make it like 5-15 minutes of talking about forum events, new staff members, council voting, interesting War/trial matches, all in between 45 minutes of free-to-use music.  I'm pretty sure that is how some people would want it.

Anyway, simpler is better.  Even I can admit that having to click on an outside link would turn me off real quick.

Our chat already has an audio player. What we could do is to have that player point to our weekly radio program so that when a person enter the chat room he/she can listen to the program. Another option is to listen to it directly from Elements Radio website, or listen to it as a podcast.

As for the program itself, I would like it to be mostly talk radio, with maybe one song between different segments. Everyone has different tastes in music so it might be difficult to find something that everyone likes, but Elements is what we all like so that's where we should concentrate on.

There could be segments like..

General news
New cards
New decks
Events
etc.

I also think that there should be a different (or same) guest every week. This would make the radio sound more like real a radio. This one-on-one discussion is easy to setup using Skype or whatever.

I propose a brief weekly roundup segment. Things it might include

-Announcements
   - Any updates to the game? (new cards, new versions, new fixes etc)
   - Announcements from the forum announcement section
   - Announcement worthy items from Wiki page
   - Current forum competitions
   - Cards that have been voted to the Forge (and or armory)
   - Forum / Wiki positions

- Tourny round up - Last week's rules and the winners

- Forum Competition winners / outcomes

- Other special event roundups, (war, team pvp etc)

All done succinctly and professionally like the BBC world new round up type of thing. 5 minutes or maybe 8 minutes max.

PS I will volunteer to do this if people want. (there may be others who are more qualified or better...)

This, I like it.  I have never thought about including the tournament/competition rules/results.

As for who should do it, I am considering making a sort of test chatcast and seeing how everyone likes or dislikes it, or if I made any pronunciation errors, which will happen.

Alright everybody, I have decided to pick this massive project up.   :)  I've been on the fence for a long while, but I figured I had some extra time to contribute more.

I cannot do this alone, however, so I need everybody's help to figure the show's layout.  What type of music should I play?  How often?  Who should I interview, if we do that?  How would we communicate, Skype?  Not only that, but I also need a patient chat when I start asking how to pronounce everybody's name, since I will mispronounce something, I'm sure.

We already have a rough layout right now, but let's refine it.  Please and thank you!

PS:  Does everybody wish for me to do this anyway?  It's okay if you don't want me to.

I want what I posted before done. Something short and sweet that will save me an hour of forum browsing.

Definitely would listen to it if you produce it. I can help a little if you need it but I basically already said what I thought would be good.

If you wanted to have a short weekly interview (as you just mentioned) that would be cool too. But not too long, 5 minutes or 10 minutes max.

Let me know if I can help some way...

Is music on newgrounds free to use for your programmes?
If not, I'm sure you could negotiate with the less known artists in exchange for playing their songs to everyone, and announcing their names a few times in the show, and maybe giving a link on where to find their music depending on how pushy they are.

There should be "War Wednesdays" and the DJ talks about what happened in war that week.

EDIT: Never mind, make it the day that the round is over so it makes sense. It won't be an alliteration though  :(

When looking for music, this is the only link you'll need: http://www.jamendo.com/en/albums

When I started the whole Elements Radio project, I cruised around the web for hours and hours, trying to find good royalty-free music. Jamendo is by far the best site for that. It has all the different kinds of genres, and some of the music is very high quality that would easily be mistaken for commercial stuff.

Problem with most other sites is that the music is either really amateur stuff, or not royalty-free. You will save a lot of time if you use Jamendo and forget about the rest because you won't find a better source. Period.

Oh dear, this is going to be like telling a potato that it can't enter in the state fair, and must be chopped into little bite-sized pieces while being slowly deep fried into a delicious meal.

I cannot become the Elements DJ, contrary to what I've quoted.  As fans of my videos know, I just don't have as much time as I used to.  Thus, I just don't have the time required to make a quality show that meets my standards.  I'm still willing to help out when I can, but I cannot become the voice that some wish to hear when they enter chat.

I am sorry to whomever I've disappointed with me going back on what I've said before.

No worries, you are not the first one this has happened to. :) I think you were the 5th DJ who had to fold, which really makes me wonder whether or not this project will ever happen without any financial backing which would enable us to get pro or semi-pro DJ's.

We could in theory gather a team to do the whole thing, but that's a difficult project unless at least one team member has previous experience of running a radio show.

The future of Elements Radio looks uncertain, but we'll see. Who knows, I might even do it myself if everything else fails. :)

i have a microphone, but it's not that good, and it's not plugged in. i also have some experience with radio (the majority of it bad...). plus, i also have a tv within left arm's reach, so you'll be hearing what's on at time of recording too...but i do have really good graphic skills, so i could knock up a few images for it, if any images are needed

What would I need to make the show?

I have an idea of what I would put in it, but my main problem is that I don't have any audio editing programs.

I would obvious need to do some cutting and pasting, splice in some music, do some fade in, fade outs and put in some sound effects.

If you all can help me figure out a program, I will make a 10-15 minute demo recording (based on what I said earlier for ideas of the weekly recap/news show)

The Wizel steps up.  :)

Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) is a great, free audio editing program.  It isn't terribly hard to learn either, and if you have any questions they can be quickly found online.

Good luck. Lets see if you can pull off something where 5-6 others have failed :) If you need something, let me know.

If you're looking for more in-depth sound programs, FL studio (
) is pretty good. I'm not much for music-making myself, however.

working on this slowly despite technical issues. Hopefully within 24 hours I will have a demo.

Once I do have something how should I give it to you Scared Girl? Should I upload it to a site for you or?

Yea, uploading it to a site would probably be the best option. But if you want, you can start a new topic on this section and give the upload link to everyone. This way you get more feedback. But if you want to keep it a "secret" for now, just PM me the link.

Okay here is what I made:

http://www.mediafire.com/?n1dz1j8bz418map

Now, can someone help me make it friendlier to listen to? Downloading an 8 mb file is a pain in the butt. I wish there was a way I could stream it but I don't know how.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if you successfully download and listen, feel free to leave a comment. It's about 8.5 minutes.

The youtube is not working for me, so I've downloaded the file instead.
Loved the "winning a card" sound. However, I feel it's a bit flat almost like listening to news in a radio, but I'm not creative enough to suggest on how to make it better. Overall, it is definitely a great effort and I'll wait for others to comment.

Time for my word on this.  :)

First of all, thanks a bunch for picking up this project; I know it isn't easy by any means.  The sound effects are pretty cool, especially the "card won" segment from the game.  The music was techno-savvy, and made me tap my foot for a little.

About your voice though, it sort of sounds croaky.  This is mostly because you are reading slowly and trying to interpret what you're going to say.  If you want a quick-fix for this, since changing the way you speak isn't fast, you should record yourself reading a semi-long sentence over and over.  Try reading like you would normally, then a bit faster, then with more clarity, ect.  Once you find one way of saying the sentence that keeps the listener's attention on your voice, and it's one you like, then keep practicing that one voice.  Eventually, start reading/recording paragraphs.

This worked for me on my videos because, sort of the opposite of you, I talked extraordinarily fast in the beginning.  I've learned to speak slower and with more clarity, and have improved how I speak publicly as an effect.

Best of luck with this, and take my opinion for a grain of salt if you wish.  :)

okay thanks for the feedback you two.

I will record another segment next week and I will take more care in the voice part. That actually came from a single continuous recording as I have to borrow my gf's comp to use a mic. Do you think I should use more of a Radio voice? The Kind where THEY talk With ALL their Words super DRAMATICALLY (SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY)... Or just try and go for some more clarity of my regular voice?

Questions for you and others:

Is a news segment too boring?

How was the length?

I know it was boring, but how was the content?

Should I use more sound effects to make it more interesting?

I think it would be better if you had guests but unless there is news a news show will be boring what I mean by that is if nothing new is going on in element ie new decks or cards then a ele news thing will be boring.

Quote
How was the length?
It was good enough for a solo show.

Same as my first answer.

No, current sound is good.

Edit: no "news voice" it just sounds silly

Oh and to upload it to youtube you need it to be in a video format not mp3

1.  Clarity is more important than anything.  You could have the most dramatic voice in the world, yet it wouldn't matter if you can't be understandable and entertaining.

2.  "News segment" is just a fancy term for stating the important stuff all in one paragraph.  It isn't bad by any means, but some information does get lost when other, more important stuff is being read next to it.

3.  The length was acceptable, at least for a demo.

4.  It wasn't boring, or at least that isn't the word I would use to describe it.  A better mic should be #1 right now if you're serious about picking up the project.

5.  The occasional sound effect is okay, but your voice is the primary point of the show.

Ok, I finally managed to listen to it.

Reading some of the previous comments, I was expecting something much worse. I liked the show, I liked it a lot. Actually, I think it was awesome.

I have a couple of comments.

I think that the content was awesome. I mean really awesome. Radio DJ's don't always know what they are talking about, but you clearly knew what you were talking about.

The length was perfect. With 10 minute shows, the pace is fast and it doesn't get boring.

I'm guessing the mic you are using is not professional quality? :) The sound is not terrible, but it has a bit of that "amateur" feel to it with the echo etc.

There's a trick you can use to make it sound better: use background music. With a subtle low-volume background music, tiny flaws in sound recording can be masked. Background music also makes the show sound more "fun" and less like boring news. Try it out and you'll see the difference.

Once again, I'd like to apologize for totally forgetting this whole thing. We should have made your radio show happen a long time ago. But better late than never, right :)

What I'd like to do next is put your show in our chatroom.

See the audio files here (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,22560.0.html)? That's what I had in mind.

The process would go like this:

1. You record a show
2. You upload it to Kiwi6 (takes less than a minute)
3. You PM me the code
4. I'll add the code to chat room
5. Millions of chat people listen to your show and you become a celebrity

Naturally we cannot pay any money for doing this, but there are some cool perks like..

- Cool forum title
- A website for the show
etc.

I have tons of questions and suggestions that I will post later.

Once again, great work.
