Elements Radio - 01 by Elementsradio on  Mixcloud
I got inspired by what Timer did earlier and wanted to do a 20-minute show that I might start doing on a weekly/bi-weekly basis if I have time.

The voice you hear is 100% computer generated.

My theme for this one was :aether so the music should kind of represents :aether. When I do the second one, I will choose another element and another style of music.

Post feedback if you want.

P.s. we need more DJ's and more radio shows!

I just finished listening the first Elements radio, and it's quite good ! Even if it's not my prefered kind of music. The voice is almost perfect, I can understand what is said without really paying attention.
It could be even better to have a transcript of the text added somewhere, or at least the links listed in the show.

Keep up the good work !

Thanks.

Transcript is a great idea. What makes it even better is the fact that I already have a transcript: the text which the robots speak. So including the transcript takes less than a minute. Thanks for the idea.

Btw here are the two voices I currently have.

The first one is what I used in the first show. It doesn't read as well as the other one, but it sounds better. Second one reads better but sounds less "sexy" and fun.

I'm a bit torn of which one of these to use.

Give me that 2nd one and I can master it for you. It'll make it sound better. Maybe add some EQ and reverb to enhance the clarity too.

As it is, the first one is *much* better, imo.

There is a download link below those clips.

EQ and reverb will help, but what it really needs is compressor. Adobe Audition (software I'm using) has a "Broadcaster" compressor preset that is supposed to produce that cool radio voice. It doesn't of course replace those super-expensive compressors that real radio stations use, but I think it does a pretty good job.

Here's an example of a regular voice and one that has EQ and compressor added to it. I didn't add any reverb this time because it gives easily that "movie voice over" effect that I am not looking for. In the last one I added even more effects.

I have to say that text-to-speech software has gone a long way since the days when Microsoft Sam was the king. :)

Yes, I agree. The British one pronounces the words better (generally at least) but sounds much much worse.

The voice-over is getting swallowed by the background music. A quick, professional sounding way to fix this is to apply a compressor to the music track that is triggered by the voice track. That way, as soon as the voice comes in, it ducks the music down by the compression ratio. Once the voice is done talking, the music will come back to the original level, with the exact timing set by the compression release parameter.

Also, if we are using that voice, applying a de-esser would make it sound better. Right now, every sibilant is coming through way too much in a harsh way.

Never would have thought to use sidechaining for this. Good idea, mizz. Also, I need to google de-esser now. :)

Yep, side-chaining is the way to go for that kind of voice over. Are you handling all of the Elements radio streams?
