Title: Elements Radio!
Post by: Scaredgirl on January 30, 2010, 03:42:53 pm
.. is just an idea at the moment but might become a reality soon. Let me explain.

I know many people turn the sound off when they play so I thought it would be a great idea to have our own Elements internet radio.

Elements has 12 different elements, meaning that in order to fill the whole 24 hour period, each element gets airtime of 2 hours per day, maybe one hour at a time. For example Light Element could have 1am and 1pm, Gravity 2 am and 2pn, etc.

Each element would have own style of music. Although all music should be "semi-easy-listening", which means no death metal and other styles of music that some people hate.

Examples:
 :entropy Fusion Jazz
 :life Acoustic
 :light Classical
 :time Oldies
 :darkness Um.. Black Metal? :)

Then maybe (a big maybe) we could have our own DJ's (players) who have a weekly one hour show (or something) where they discuss about strategies, updates, etc.

Mondays: Noob Hour (tips for new players)
Wednesdays: Derek's New Decks
Sundays: PvP Tournament Recap
etc.

Today I've been looking for a website that would offer this kind of service but so far I haven't found quite what I'm looking for. Loudcaster.com is pretty close but it's still on beta stage so we have to wait for a while (should be ready "early 2010).

Goal is to find a service that gives us a widget similar to this one:

Your browser does not support iframes.
.. which we can then embed next to the chat. This way you can lurk in chat and listen to Elements radio.

There might be a monthly fee involved depending on what service provider we pick, but no worries, you the community members wouldn't have to pay anything. It would be 100% free.

I know this sounds like a crazy plan but with today's technology it can be done. At least I think it can, lol :)

If anyone has any experience in setting up an internet radio, send me a PM or post here.

Please post feedback and any ideas. Thanks.

I don't think there are.

I went to Google and only thing I found was a MtG podcast but that's a different thing.

Btw I went find royalty-free music and there's tons of it all over the internet.

Here's one example: http://www.danosongs.com/ (http://www.danosongs.com/)

I was expecting something horrible but the quality is actually pretty good.

Also Cisco had some good ideas on where to get music for our radio. We'll keep you posted.

I think there isn´t a radio for CardGames, (perhaps one for gamers) but there are free radio stations for almost every kind of music.
And how many hours radio program do we have ? How many could we make with Elements?
Not much.

:darkness Um.. Black Metal? :)
Maybe slightly more instrumental prog metal and NWoAHM?
The instrumental tracks on Mastodon's Crack the Skye come to mind as an example.

As a former DJ and Head of Production for an actual physical radio station, I would suggest against having actual DJs except as a bonus thing (maybe a podcast), because you'll never get volunteers to pick up a regular slot with reasonable quality. Just stick to playlists of music for now, would be my suggestion.

Not much.
Idea is not to make a talk radio. Elements Radio will most play music, but if possible, we will also add 2-3 weekly shows + reruns. Anything more than that would be too much.

Lately there has been a lot of new things happening with Elements and doing one hour show about those changes each week shouldn't be a problem to anyone who has any experience in running a radio show. Keep in mind that you don't have to talk for the full hour, there's also music in between.

These shows should probably be hosted by two people (or one if he/she has a lot of experience).

I have no idea what that is but sounds good. :)

We should first found out what kind of music is available for us without having to pay royalties. There are some free stuff on the internet and like I said Cisco has some ideas.

Anyone with a good source for music, please share it with us.

Cool. You can help out us noobs then. :)

Yes, I'm worried about volunteers also. Projects like might this sound cool to them at first but at some point they get bored and quit or quality goes to sh*t like you said.

Yes, playlist first. Music only. After a while, if things look good and we have a good plan, then add DJ's and weekly programming. Baby steps.

Title: Re: Elements Radio!

No metal, no win.
We can have metal but it has to be as "easy listening" as possible. The goal is to have 12 different styles but not so extreme that people.

For example if we played hardcore death metal on "Death Hour", 90% of listeners would turn the radio off.

Optimal situation would be if people could listen to the radio regardless of what genre was playing. That might not be possible but we can try. :)

I like music and listen to almost all different genres depending on my current mood but I know majority of people avoid the hardcore stuff. Therefore we have to compromise to get more people to listen.

We have to avoid these:

- Very fast, very loud music
- Music where the singing is basically screaming
- Obvious religious music (semi-religious might be ok)
- Any music that is too "weird"
etc.

Of course we can have special shows where DJ's can play whatever they want. But the main content should be easy listening that fits well as a background music for Elements.

I think there you can get music. It says:
Quote
The Audio Portal is a resource for aspiring musicians and Flash artists!

Learn more about it in the FAQ and be sure to check out the Audio Forum!
And the best music will be Trance. You can hear it and don't need to concentrate on it. Also makes Trance happy.

Thing is, I think music where grunts (not screams) are used instrumentally as well as lyrically is amazing. But there'll always be people who think it's too evil, I suppose.

(For a good example; Epica - Run For A Fall (
noexternalembed-ws), ignore the crappy anime.)

Organ, wind instruments in an echo-ey chamber, gregorian Chant and choir in the background. Very aetherial.

No I mean trance. That I posted before is some oldschool hardtrance.
Popcorn is trance, too I think.
Techno is rhythm, trance is harmony.

But sometimes you can't say for sure what kind of music it is.

No, I'm pretty sure that's Light. The gates of heaven are white, not orange. I do agree with the Drum stuff, though.

This sounds prohibitively expensive. The linked chat already went down b/c of expense; can it be affirmed that this won't go the same way?

With the chat the problem was that because we used a public chat, there was no way of controlling the chat usage. This meant that tons of guests and bots stormed the chat which used huge amounts of CPU.

With Elements Radio we can control the number of user slots. For example we can start with only 25 slots. Then if more people want to use it, we gradually increase the size.

I'm still thinking about upgrading my hosting plan. Right now it's 90% sure that I will upgrade it this week. With the better hosting plan I'm pretty sure we could run the radio as well, although I'm not 100% sure about that because I don't really know how much CPU it uses. We need to test it to find out.

If my hosting plan fails, there are other options as well. Web is full on Shoutcast hosting providers who have relatively cheap hosting as long as we don't demand CD sound quality.

Difficult to say at this point how this all will play out but the Elements Radio will be launched in some shape or form.

i think that is a good idea, but i think every day each thing move back an hour, because not everyone can get on at all times of day, and might be forced to ether turn off the sound or hear a song they don't like, and so they can hear more types.

That's pretty dark. If I ever decide to murder someone, I'll probably use that as a background music :)

I said in that other thread that we need "easy-listening" songs. Something everyone can listen without having to turn the radio off. Although the element is called Death, the songs don't have to be about that.

I'm all for musical variety, but shouldn't we try to keep our Elements Radio station as PG-rated as possible? There are kids that play this game, and I sure wouldn't want my kid listening to some of the stuff that I heard today. The first song that came up was rap and was called "I'm not Sh***ing You", which was followed up by another rap that contained explicit sexual material and talked about "niggaz" and such. If we have to include rap/hip hop genres, I say we go for something with no profanity or questionable content.

I think we ought to have a side option on the Elements the game page that you can click on to listen to the hourly music and have an option for different broadcasts ('podcasts'?) like the interview with Zanz.  This might be a bit of work, though.

Sure. You sound a bit overqualified but if you want to help, by all means do. :)

At the moment Elements Radio is kind of taking a break while I'm doing more important stuff like wiki and forum events. Also both of our supposed-to-be-DJ's have bailed out. Hopefully we'll get Elements Radio original programming up and running by next fall.

If you have any ideas, just let me know.

I just turned 13 recently, so I joined forum like a week ago.  I can personally say that most 13 year olds have heard most curses/explicit langauge by this age (although they may not know what it means), and anyone who is disobeying the age requirments can suffer the consequences, not to sound evil.  :life :light

There's also this other song, Missing Venus (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/catania2). They say 'Time' a lot in that one. Although, I can't get an MP3 of it to save my life.

I'm getting a little bored of just the water playlist, despite how awesome it sounds, which is why I dig up this old topic. :P

Yes, I believe so. Or at least I hope.
I'm working on another 'show' at the moment, though I don't know when (or if) it could be uploaded. It should be ready for the masses in the next few weeks. I find it hard to satisfy all the various music-tastes we have in the community while also trying to keep the thematical approach, but the Water one does getting a little old. It is also very time-consuming to find high-quality music files over the internet.

Also, we are lacking in (enough) people who are willing to make podcasts to bring a diverse rotation to the radio. I *could* make a new one each or every other week, but probably the outcome wouldn't be so satisfactory (at least I'd be ashamed to release such rough-and-ready results).

Just a thought: You may be going the wrong way by chaining the elements to genres. The lyrical themes should be considered as well. Classic rock alone could cover quite a few elements by itself. "Let Me Stand Next To Your  :fire" by Hendrix, I Feel the  :earth Move, Blinded by The  :light, and so on. A dedicated DJ could come up with a theme night that straddles several genres. Just A thought to open things up a bit. From Classic Country: Long Black Veil is undoubtedly a  :death song.

Fair disclosure: I'm an old fart. Is there anyone else out there over 50 that plays this game? And  :darkness is so goth, right?

Indeed. One theme shouldn't be limited to only a single music genre, yet it is hard to squeeze in several fundamentally different types of music in around 40-60mins, while also remaining the 'fluidity' of the show (as many players are listening to it as a background for grinding).
Actually, I was considering Long Black Veil (though I was thinking about Cash's version) for :death Death, glad you came up with it; but I was really afraid of the fact that not many people would enjoy it, sadly, because most of our players are kids and youngsters. And the way I experienced it so far, it's hard for today's young folks to 'recognize themselves' in older and/or more classical songs, even if its only a few decades old. But I'd be more than happy if the community would prove me wrong.
