Since we have new chat software and people seem to be asking about how to do certain things in chat, here's a guide (complete with screenshots!) on how to do them.

If there's anything I missed, let me know by either replying to this thread or sending me a PM ;)

Note: These will only work if you have a forum account, and are logged into the forums!

Table of Contents

Setting a Default Colour, Turning Off Chat Sounds

On the top left hand corner of the chat screen, click on "Panels"

To set a default colour, click on one of the colour boxes on the right side of the screen to set as your default colour. You can click on Bold and/or Italics to automatically start off with them.

To turn off chat sounds, go to the set of squares on the left side of the screen. Click on the left-most square of each of the 4 rows.

Make sure that you click on Submit to save the settings!

Individual chat sounds and when they activate:

Message - When someone types something in the main chat.
Online - When someone comes online.
P.Chat/Topic - When someone starts a private chat with you, or when someone creates a new chat topic.
Message (PM) - When someone sends you a message through private chat (this is not the same as a private message).

Displaying a Chat Avatar

You'll need to upload your avatar to an image-hosting service like http://imgur.com first -- the chat doesn't display images that are uploaded directly to the forum servers, for some reason.

In the forums, go to Profile -> Forum Profile

Click on the radio button next to "Specify avatar by URL" and then type in the location of the image.
Press "Change Profile" on the bottom right of the page to save your profile settings.

Private Messages, Private Chats, and the Ignore Function

NOTE: Guests do not have access to these functions. You must be a registered member on the forums in order to send PMs, have private chats, and ignore other users!

On the right side of the chat screen, there is the list of people online.

A blue icon next to a name means that the user is online.
A grey icon next to a name means that the user is away.
A green icon next to a name means that the user is a chat moderator.

When you click on a person's name, you'll open up their chat profile.

Type in the box to send a private message to them. (The forum profile closes if you press the arrow to send the message instead of pressing the Enter key on your keyboard)

Click on Private Chat to enter a private one-on-one conversation with them. Use this if you need to send more than one message to the same person in a short amount of time.

Click on Ignore to prevent anything that person says from being displayed to you. You can unignore the user at any time by going back to their chat profile and clicking the Unignore button.

Thanks for doing this so I don't have to. +Rep

We could extend this a bit to include all other kinds of tips as well, for example things like when you click the painting in progress, it skips straight to the final version. Or maybe a short tutorial on how the warning system works, which could be useful to both the mods (they know what to do) and victims (they know what will happen when they break the rules).
