Title: How to Search for Decks or see if your idea has already been made
Post by: Chapuz on September 10, 2013, 02:39:18 pm
After countless times helping newcomers search for decks with certain cards, I decided to make a little tutorial.

How to Search for Decks

This tutorial will show you how to:

1. Build a "deck" only with the Core cards you are looking for. The amount of Core cards to search should be less than 5 to make a not-too-specific search.

2. Click in the Import/Export button, which is right at the left of your deck. You will notice a code appears. Select that code and copy it.
Note: Each 3-digit code represents a card of your deck, with the last one being the code of your mark. Ignore the mark code, just copy the codes of the cards before the last one.
If you don't want to open the game /or the trainer) to look for the card codes, you can look for them here: Card Code List (1.31) (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,17110.0.html)

3. Go to the section of the forum you think you will find decks with your cards.

4. Paste the card codes you copied before in the Search bar and press the 'Search' button.

5. Look at the threads of that section that contains the words you searched for. In this case the 'words' are card codes, which ALWAYS appear under the decks which have them.

6. Go back to step 3, but now with the sections of decks with more elements than where you searched before! This will make you find decks with your core cards and probably more synergies used. In my example, a new player looking for Immolation and Photon would have found this deck as 2nd link in the Duo decks section:
Hover over cards for details, click for permalink
Deck import code : [Select]
5f0 5f0 5f0 5f0 5f0 5f4 5f4 5f5 5f5 5f6 5f6 5f6 5f7 5f9 5f9 5f9 5f9 5f9 5f9 5fc 5fc 5fc 5fc 5fc 5fc 5l9 5l9 5l9 5l9 5l9 5l9 8po

where it would have found this deck in the rainbows section, which works way better:
Hover over cards for details, click for permalink
Deck import code : [Select]
4vh 4vh 4vj 4vj 4vj 4vj 4vj 4vj 590 5c1 5c5 5f9 5f9 5f9 5f9 5f9 5f9 5fa 5fa 5fa 5fa 5fa 5fa 5l9 5l9 5l9 5l9 5l9 5l9 61q 8pm

7. A note about commenting: If you made a deck and found a similar one already posted (that happens a lot!), you can post your version as a comment in the thread you found instead of making a new one. If your version is definitely worse than the one you found, don't post it! It may confuse new players that see your version and think it is better than the one in the main post.

Good job on this chapuz!

By the way, you wouldn't happen to know of a way to search for either the unupped or upped of a card at the same time, would you? (Because at the moment it's just extra searching)

Advanced searching:

Match all words -> Match any words

Ah, heh. Well, this was an old tool I found buried in the tools section of the site data. I can update it if it's useful.

For the past few weeks, the search function and the deck search tool mentioned afterwards haven't been working for me. They always return zero results, no matter what card combinations I use. I know I'm not doing something wrong, because I've successfully used these methods many times in the past.

Same here. Searching card codes get no results. Even the tool does not work. What happened?

Searching words still works.

Are you searching in the section you want to? i.e. if you are searching for a Bonewall code and you are in a mono life deck thread you will surely find nothing

I tried it for Entire Forum and it didn't work.

I think the problem is with the new deck images. Dek.im must hide the source of codes from searching, while the old version let it.

Nope, it's exactly the same for searching.

Something has been borked with SMF search for a little while now. It won't return more than 1 page of results when there should clearly be more, etc. It started when the forums were updated to the latest 2.0.6, guessing something happened. I'm having trouble tracking down the issue.

The workaround for now is to use Google like this:
Quote
site:elementscommunity.org/forum 8pj

That would return all decks with Mark of Entropy. You can of course replace 8pj with a deck code, etc.

Searching for deck codes appears to be buggy. When searching for decks with Chaos Power (6u2) in them there will be no decks found even if there are plenty of them around.

If my hunch is correct, each words in the search term needs to be more than three characters long or it'll be ignored.
Since each card codes are exactly three characters long, go figure~

A shame that the only thing whose name is three characters long in the entire game is Ash, which obviously is not a standalone card.

This should be in the OP.
