Taken from http://elementscommunity.org/forum/brawl-archive/brawl-2-round-2-(voting-phase)/ Artist Task (by Team Crusaderps), it was seemingly harder to make a single drawing out of an actual object. And a gif no less! However I was able to draw it, and w/o help from Treldon our artist (i was determined not to ^^)

So without further ado, a drawing from someone who should never be allowed to pick up a pencil again:

The power of three...
Make a card that incorporates three different quanta types, then design a deck around it.

Spoiler for Meaning of Life:
Blast Ant | Exploding Ant

Quote
The blast ant has the ability to commit suicide in a massive explosion of poison. By contracting its abdominal muscles, the ant willingly ruptures its gaster and mandibular glands, releasing a spray of sticky, irritating liquid around itself at the cost of its own life

Task Specific Explanations:
Exploding Ants - this is a combo task and this card comes from the CD portion of the task and is required for use in the deckbuilding aspect of the task.

Explanation of cards:
  • Life Pendulums, Death mark, and Cremation for generating quanta needed. The overall quanta balance is good with Cremation for Fire to power exploding the ants with plenty of Death to cover the every-turn draw of the ants.
  • Exploding Ants are included for the task purpose (duh!) and serve as CC for the deck (large creatures start dying to Carapace with ants give a "final blow" of sorts). They are represented by the leaf dragon.
  • Deadly Poison are included as damage source that bypasses shields and is relatively cheap to play - do not want to fight with ants for lots of Death quanta.
  • Arsenic is included as a good ramp-damage source in the weapon slot that does not hog Death quanta.
  • Thorn Carapaces are included for defense and to help mop up excess Life quanta.

Strategy:
  • Drop the quanta Be careful to leave a little Death quanta in your pool before ending your turn if you need to build some toxic counters.
  • POISON! Play the poison and Arsenic as fast as possible without violating the above Death quanta consideration (some turns it could be OK to not leave quanta for counter building).
  • Raise your shield Get carapace rolling when you can in case of large hitters to start poison counters that ants can finish off later!

Spoiler for Frostbite Borealis:
ELITE CHAMELEON

When talking about life's weaknesses, people often mention lack of pc, but the thing that separates life from other non-pc elements is cc. Life, at the moment, is very prone to cc, while not offering cc of it's own. This card aims to fix exactly that.

THE GEM-LIKE BOND OF GOLEMS AND CHAMELEONS

The deck aims to control the opponent's creature in many different ways. First, it is able to stop them attacking by using heavy armor + gravy shield. In case of late gravy shield, or momentum'ed creatures, chameleon can use plate armor on other chameleon's and devour. Bonds help to keep alive while mitosis help to generate more chameleon's, or more gemfinders, leading to more earth quanta. Golems + mitosis help with damage and help to consume the extra earth quanta.

Upped gives upped cards. That's why it's not different at all.

Okay, this is technically bending the rules, but the idea was just a little too cool to doubt.

The alchemy card you get is determined by the quanta consumed by brew.
The alchemy cards are:
Quintessence, Unstable Gas, Liquid Shadow, Aflatoxin, Basilisk Blood, Antimatter, Rage Potion, Black Hole, Adrenaline, Luciferin, Precognition and Nymph's Tears.

If water is consumed, you get two copies of the alchemy card(s) you would get, not just one. This allows for a maximum of 4 cards for one brew.

Branding Iron | Branding Iron
3 quanta types: Earth, Fire, and quanta of your mark. I would have explicitally stated "Quanta of your mark" but there just isn't enough room on the card.

When flown, the stats are 4|4 for both and the ability name is "Brand".

If you brand a creature, you make it yours, so it's ability costs quanta of your mark now. Use it as a pseudo-SoR on your own creatures, or use it as a pseudo-Lobo on your opponent's creatures. Only affects abilities with a cost. The new cost is the same amount of quanta as the old one was. For example, if you use this on a Purple Nymph with a Water mark, the ability now costs 4 water quanta. Simple.

Replace Relics with Branding Irons

A twist on the traditional mutant deck, which makes it easier to use all those lovely abilities. Time forms the basis of the deck allowing for Deja vus and Hourglasses to be used, but also having enough to fuel mutant abilities once they've been branded. Supernovas provide the quanta to play the Branding Irons as well as a couple other abilities, but eventually you'll be able to get the whole deck running on just Time, which makes things a whole lot easier.

SIGN UPS
Anyone with a forum and a chat account can sign up for this event. Start by reading the rules very carefully. Then sign up by posting on a separate sign up topic. If you cannot find a sign up topic, or if it is locked, this event is not currently active, and you will have to wait for it to restart.

There is no maximum amount of participants in this event. However, teams must have equal amounts of people, and if necessary, the mod will become a player on the side with less players.

DECKBUILDING
In this event there are two teams: The Martians and the Earthlings.

Martians: 10 or less copies of cards are allowed. Both unupped and upped forms are counted in the total copies of a card. However, any card in the Human Cards list may not be used. Up to 10 upgraded cards are allowed. You have triple mark, 200 HP, and double draw. Max deck size is 59 cards, because the Trainer is rather silly on that.

Earthlings: 6 or less copies of cards are allowed, Both unupped and upped forms are counted in the total copies of a card. Up to 4 upgraded cards are allowed. and upgrades are allowed only for "human cards". Any card in the Human list may be upgraded, without restriction. You have single mark, 100 HP, and single draw. Max deck size is 60.

Note that no cards like Ashes or Malignant Cell may be allowed in either teams' decks.

Earthlings also have three abilities to chose from.:
  • Astronomer: You are allowed to see your opponent's deck. You, with your telescope, see the oncoming invasion first. With this knowledge, you are allowed to prepare for the war ahead.
  • Military: You gain 4 upgrades which can be spent anywhere. Your weapons are better than any civilians. As a result, you have the best chance of attacking the Martians./
  • Bacteria: Reduce your opponent's extra copies or upgrades by 2. The Martians were never prepared for you...Their immune systems cannot fight against you, as a result, they are weakened. Fight them now while your chance is still here!

Skills may be changed every round. PM the skill you will use along with your decks. To make sure Martians will modify decks for these skills, the mod will give the information as soon as the deckbuilding stage stars. So, for Astronomer, the Martian will be notified that he must reveal his deck to his opponent Earthling (as well as have a shorter deckbuilding stage). For bacteria, the Martian will be notified that they must use less upgrades. For soldier, no notification is needed.

Achievement Unlocked! - Rules
Original idea by: Zawadx

Using pre-submitted decks, players face off against each other in order to accomplish an achievement faster than the opponent. Now available in the game and the Trainer!

1. HOW TO SIGN UP?
Anyone with a forum and a chat account can sign up for this event. Start by reading the rules very carefully. Then sign up by posting on a separate sign up topic. If you cannot find a sign up topic, or if it is locked, this event is not currently active, and you will have to wait for it to restart.

Maximum amount of participants for this event is 32. If the event is full, you can still sign up as a reserve player, and will get a chance to join the event if any of the 32 players doesn't show up during round 1.

2. GETTING READY
At the start of each round, the Organizer will post the Achievement for that round. Each player should build one deck which tries to accomplish that achievement as fast as it can. Players will have four days from the start of the round to build their decks and PM them to the organizer.

Spoiler for Sample Achievements:
  • Blitzkrieg: Win the game as fast as you can. The time here is measured in seconds.
  • Zerg Rush: Fill up your side of the board as fast as you can.
  • Godzilla: Get a creature with 499/499 in stats or more, as fast as you can.
  • Dragon's Hoard: Obtain 75 of each quanta, as fast as you can.
  • X-Men, Elements Class: Have a field with at least 12 different mutants, with at least one from each element.

3. BRACKETS
This event is a single-elimination tournament, though the brackets will be kept secret by the Organizer for fairness. At the end of each round's Deckbuilding phase, each player will receive their opponent's deck (but not their opponent's identity). They must use this deck as their opponent for all games.

4. GAMES
Players have 3 days to get the games done. They must use the trainer, setting their opponent's deck by using the 'Import deck code for AI to use' function. The 'All Cards' and 'More Money' buttons may be used, but the 'More Quanta', 'Chaos Mode' and 'Mark Level' buttons may NOT. These rules will be enforced.

Players then play as many games as they like using their pre-submitted deck vs. their opponent's, trying to get the achievement accomplished. If you manage to fulfill an accomplishment, take a screenshot of the game at that point, and then the lose screen immediately after that. The exact regulations on screenshots may differ based on the round.

5. AFTER GAMES
Winner should pm their screenshots to the Organizer for review. At the end of the round, the organizer will announce all the pairings which had occurred during that round. If you were slower to achieve the achievement than your opponent, then you will be eliminated. Then the next round will begin with the remaining competitors.

6. WINNER
Winner of the single-elimination tournament is the winner of the event. He will receive the following forum award icon:

Spoiler for Red Stars:

Build a harrowing gauntlet of decks for opposing challengers to face, or build a deck to climb to the summit!

1. HOW TO SIGN UP?

Anyone with a forum account can sign up for this event. Start by reading the rules very carefully.
You sign up by posting here, in this very topic that you wish to!
You must also PM the Organizer of this event (who will be theelkspeaks) with 5 GAUNTLET decks.
The format of the PM is the following:

The deckbuilding rules are the following (Warning: They may change each time this event is hosted).

The GAUNTLET decks and their opponents will be revealed in thread.  Your job is to build a CHALLENGER deck to challenge the gauntlet you are assigned.  You must attempt to beat each of the decks in the GAUNTLET you face.

CHALLENGER decks:
Any card available in game is allowed, with the following exceptions:

No Mark cards.
No more than 4 playable Shards (shards for which your deck lacks the quanta to play are permitted without limit).
No more than 3 Nymphs (element doesn't matter).
No more than 6 Upgraded cards.
The deck must be between 30 and 60 cards.
The deck is going to be controlled by the Organizer.
You may include some strategical hints within your post about how you want your CHALLENGER deck to be played.

GAUNTLET decks:
Any card available in game is allowed, with the following exceptions:

No Mark cards.
No more than 20 total playable Shards (across the 5 decks combined).
Any number of Nymphs is allowed.
No more than 50 Upgraded cards (sum across all decks).
The deck must be between 30 and 59 cards.
No more than 6 copies of any card may be included across all 5 decks in total.
The deck is going to be controlled by AI LvL 3.
No strategical hints are needed, because AI is going to play like an AI.

Players earn one point for game a deck they built wins, whether CHALLENGER or GAUNTLET.

Spoiler for Meaning of Life:
30-33

It was really hot outside. The day had just begun, and all were eager to go. My breathing was heavy. I pushed the door and here I was : In the Colosseum. In front of me stood my first opponent: mrpaper. You could hear the crowd chanting, you could see gladiators in blood, and you could smell the sweat. According to the bets made in the audience, this would be a close fight but I was on the losing end. The arena started to change before my very eyes. I saw a palace raise in front of me and I knew that light would guide me through this time against mrpaper. Our fight was ongoing, slowly but surely. We would find a winner, it was only a matter of time, but I was not dumb. I knew that healing myself was a key part of this fight. I won that fight and went on to the next one, with my head up. I was happy to at least get to round 2, and win this fight as an underdog.

16-8

This time, the crowd was in my favor. In front of me stood zaelix, which i had not really heard of before (nor have I heard of him since either). I could hear my name echoing through the walls: ji412jo! ji412jo! ji412jo! And I felt the ground trembling. I knew what that meant, the arena was transforming, and we would know where we were going to fight. What I saw in front of me put a grin on my face: I was fighting in the Palace of Chronos again. I clearly had an environmental advantage going into this, I knew what I was getting into. And it showed in the fight. It was a clear bloodbath, Zaelix never even stood a chance. And as I was about to cut his head, I saw his puppy eyes, begging me to keep him alive. Being an egoistic warrior who only thought about fame and money, I not only cut his head, but threw it in the crowd. The wins were getting to my head, but I knew my next opponent would be a tough one: the almighty vagman13.

I personally knew vagman as one of the best warriors in the kingdom. He had beat me countless times, but I knew that I had a chance. A slim chance, but there was one.

6-23

I was really glad that there were still 6 people behind me, even though it really was a David versus Goliath fight. And the ground started to shake again. I was really nervous, as the only experience I had was in the Chronos Palace. And obviously, this was not our arena this time. The ground started to lift off. It was the floating heart. We were in sky, and god knows I hate heights. I've always loved the shadows. Before the fight started, I noticed his sword.

ji412jo: Hey vagman... your sword is illegal. It does not respect the rules set by our king.

vagman: I did not understand it this way, and I refuse to use another sword, This is the one I am used to. (turns to the king) I demand you find a solution

King: Alright, here is my solution. Guards, execute him!

...and this is how I won round 3. Even to this day, I think back and wish I would've let vagman use his illegal sword. But I didn't, and here I was qualified for the semi-finals.

1-2

Youngsot was my opponent this time. Twice as many people thought he would be the winner. In fact, there was only one voice behind me. Most probably my mother. But then again, I had little to no experience in this Colosseum, only the Chronos Palace did I know of. I was nervous in knowing what was going to happen to me, and as I was thinking about it, the ground started to shake. And shake it did, I even fell to the ground. But the ground lifted itself. Oh my God. We were going to fight in the floating heart again, I thought I was avoiding it, but nope. And it was so much of a disadvantage, I really was losing my foot. I really start panicking, and before I realize it, I'm on the ground, sword at my throat. And at this moment, I think of Zaelix. I remember being in the total opposite situation. And as I see the movie of my life going through my eyes, I regret not saving Zaelix. I start crying. Seeing the tears through my eyes, Youngsot doesn't understand. He decides to spare my life.

And I am glad he did. Even though I never understood why, I am glad he did. I did not make the finals, I did not win the tournament. But I put up hell of a fight, went farther than anyone expected (except maybe my mother, who said I would win it all) and had the fun of my life.

Maybe one day another Colosseum will happen. Maybe I will participate again. But one thing Is sure. My sword is for winning. My sword is for hurting. My sword is for bleeding. But my sword is not for killing. Because to be able of compassion, that also is the meaning of life.

Spoiler for Frostbite Borealis:
Worthy

How do we measure worth?
Is it in history? The dogged memories of loyal routine.
Is it in bravery? Will to battle. Strength to fight.
Is worth simply quantified in the eye of the beholder? Right place, right time, right audience.
All I ask is a enjoyable trial.
I stand, battered and bruised, damp and cold, and yet I stand to face my foe.
All I ask is a fair trial.
I have tried my hardest to lead in my Master’s absence, and stand ready to take his place in the eyes of friend and foe alike.
All I ask is a glorious trial.
Who am I to claim ‘loyalty’ as right? Who am I to succeed unopposed? I welcome this Earthen upstart’s challenge.
All I ask is a successful trial.
But now I must simply try to speak. The silence is as the bottom of the ocean, and I feel as though I am there as I try to address the crowd.

“…It warms my heart – a hard thing to do – to receive your blessing in the voting poll…” Pause, remember to pause if they cheer.

“I will fight with all my frozen heart. I accept that my enemy today could be my friend and master tomorrow. Know this. Defeat or victory. My heart lies forever in the ocean.”

That was good. Applause. His turn.
He looked at the crowd. He looked at me.

“If he wins, you are happy. If I win, you are strong. Let it begin.”

The First Battle

How am I to go through this again if I lose?
Discord… Crawler… Focus… good hand…
The last time… final game, I choked. I choked.
Wings…
An ex-Earth Master brings wings? Do not underestimate him.
5…4…3…2…1…
Open for attack, attack attack ATTACK!
1-0
I can do this. I know this element, it is my friend. Redemption for the losses I have suffered.

The Second Battle

He may have Mastered Earth, but Water is my domain. My fastest rush will end this quickly.
Two pillars. Neither upgraded.
I have come back from worse. Play a crawler.
He plays two.
Play a crawler.
He plays two.
Too fast, just too fast.
1-1.
Not again. Heart beats in my chest. All I can think of is how close I came last time. Not again.

The Third Battle

There comes a time, an isolated moment, when we can measure worthiness in ourselves. I shall use my signature deck this round. If I win I will throw myself with all my focus and drive into the final three necessary victories. This is how I define my worth.
Early Poseidon. The sea god heard my cry.
Don't be too hasty. You may need the Earth Quanta for Bloods.
He plays a squid, and another tower.
Quanta or speed. Quanta or speed?
Destroy the towers, leave the squid to slow me. No regrets.
Denial or Control?
He sends out a Mummy.
Ignore it, focus, ride the storm.
No more pillars to destroy. Basilisk Blood on the Squid
I can feel the waves. Crashing down on him, this game is the turning point I know it. The turning of the tides.
He plays nothing. He can play nothing
Here it comes, finish him
Arctic Dragon
2-1

I know what will happen.

I know this is the time.

Use poison this time, throw him off...
3-1

How did I know after that third game? When there was so much left to do?

Vampires fly through his wings...
4-1

I think...it was the look in that gallant ex-Earth Master's eyes in that moment of defeat. That Blacksmith had lost a game in the Water Trials Final...against a deck splashing his abandoned Earth. It gave me so much more confidence than last time...

This is it. One step away...

To victory.

5-1

Brian smiled at the commentator’s remark. Little fools. You really believe anyone could get so far with mere RNG? He rolled his eyes, looking away from the stammering wreck in front of him. ‘Lose two battles and they go crying for their momma.’ Brian sighed, ‘This is the new generation of Elements the Game.’

He rose from his seat and walked out of the Battle Arena. Usually he was the first person to enter the Green Room, since most of his matches ended in five minutes. But today there was a cyan-haired woman sitting in the Green Room when he got there. And a damn fine lass too! It was such a shame they were on the opposite side of the brackets. Well, there was always the final. Brian gave her a little leer to see if she would be strong enough to last till then. He laughed out loud at her look of revulsion. So, you’re nothing but a stupid boobie noobie.

A sudden wail came from the entrance, and Brain turned to see the whining excuse of an elementalist who he’d had the misfortune to face in his first round. ‘Well well well, if it isn’t the Little Roachie!’ Brian loved to label the newbies. He’d forget them all otherwise.

The crying cockroach cleared his throat, which just produced a more doleful wail. ‘Sir-‘ it began.

‘Shut up.’ Brian coldly replied. Then he let out a chuckle, observing the roach’s horrified look. Little Roachie’s trying so hard not to fly away. ‘I know you’re here for the ransom,’ Brian said gruffly, ‘and no, there won’t be any negotiation about that. Rules are rules, kid. You gotta pay to play.’

‘But I don’t even-‘ the cockroach-like elementalist squirmed.

‘Just give up all you got, and run while you can, before the TOs catch you.’ Brian winked. The roach gulped, quickly looking around the room for the exit. Brian made one step towards it, and it dropped its sack of jingling electrum. Brian laughed heartily as he picked up the coins, and then gave his opponent a kick. 'Now get out of here,' Brian smirked. 'This place is for players only.' The kid ran towards the exit, looking more like a roach in frantic half-flight by the minute. Brian turned and gave the sack a little shake towards the fine lass sitting there. She recoiled from him. The Ransoms were within the old tourney rules, but not many approved of them.

After what seemed like ages, his next opponent finally arrived. A half-vet; he didn’t last 10 minutes. The next one was hailed to be a vet by all. That only prolonged his time in the arena to 20 minutes. ‘The Luck of the Irish never fails’ he whispered in a sing-song voice as he entered the green room. And for the first time in his life, he was there after his opponent.

‘You’re finally here.’ The cyan-haired girl acknowledged. Brian smiled into her cold eyes. It was just her way of hiding admiration for him. Sure, be like that. Brian rolled his eyes and headed towards the Arena.

He positioned himself in the lotus position, and flexed his arms as he looked across at his opponent. The commentator started whirring, ‘Get ready folks, for the final you’ve all been waiting for. Who will take this potluck away? Let’s find out, shall we?’

The crowd roared as Brian’s fingers tingle, ready to work their magic.

‘3… 2… 1… Begin!’

Brian concentrated on the two photons he’d located before. With a flick of both his hands, they went up in flames. Brian harnessed the energy, forming the swirling mist of the explosion into two magnificent phoenixes.

His opponent was quick to retaliate, shooting a forked lightning at the two from her fingertips. Brian grimaced. In the arena, his creatures were like parts of his body. Their pain was his pain. He unleashed his blind fury at her, lashing out with a fan of black daggers he’d obtained from the far-off land of Shadow. She fell down to her knees, and soon enough his phoenixes had risen from their ashes. The game was his.

But then, just as he was about to deliver the finishing blow, the girl arose and simply… disappeared. ‘Impossible!’ Brian exclaimed. A shifter, with her stupid phase shields? Brian stamped at the ground in frustration.

As he did so, he observed a vibration in his area different from his own. He turned, to see the cyan-haired girl raising her sword. Brian let out the last laugh as he drew his dagger and plunged it into her heart. Boobie noobie, just what I’d thought.

The crowds weren’t roaring today as he collected his prize. They’d grown sick of his consistent winning, how his supporters always got the bets. Where was the fun in that? Already the TOs were working on better rulesets, so that the Luck of the Irish would never strike again.

Meanwhile, Brian walked out into the night, towards the Bazaar. All the shops were closed by now, but he had an arrangement. He paid out his winnings for the food and conjured a few steel golems to carry it for him.

A stirring started as soon as he entered the slum. ‘He’s back!’ the murmur rang through the crowd, along with sighs of relief and smiles all around. Soon enough they had enough food to last them through a week. But that wasn’t going to be enough. Brian gave them all a wistful look as he announced, ‘I’ll be back next week. Don’t worry, we’ll survive.’ He tried to hide the tears as he said a silent prayer, hoping the Potluck of the Irish would be enough to feed them for all the days to come.

Spoiler for Red Stars:
Art

Three hundred seconds can change a life.
Three hundred seconds can create fame and ruin reputations.
Three hundred seconds can force the competition lovers to the forefront of the battlefield, the Tournament PvPers into a less comfortable set of skills, and the expert Microsoft Painters out of hiding.

Five minutes is sacred time for a paint competition.

Alex, uncomfortable in the rule-saturated PvP Tournaments and far too ignorant to join a PvP Event, found the right competition for him one day as he perused the forums. MS Paint Card Art #6 was just starting, and Alex was determined to try his hand at Paint. Sure, he couldn’t craft a meta-crushing PvP deck, but there was no way painting on the computer for five minutes would be that hard. Certain that victory would taste sweet and the competition award icon would glorify his profile, Alex spent a few days narrowing his list of potential card art. He looked for simple shapes and easy to identify objects/creatures. The Sundial struck him as the art of the competition. He could see himself masterfully shading the background, and if he had time, Alex would no doubt carefully draw a simple shadow underneath the ancient clock. Five minutes, Ha!, what a long time.
A cup of coffee at his desk and the sundial art in the corner of his screen, Alex began his timer and his art.

5:00
Oh my gosh! He had prepared and prepared, and he knew the steps he was going to take, but somehow the clock sapped away his thoughts. Fear and nerves paralyzed him for what seemed like minutes when only a few seconds had actually elapsed. He had to get a hold of himself. He painted the background a light blue, he would worry about the shading later. He began to draw crude lines for the sundial.

4:00
Time was moving impossibly fast, how could this possibly be?! He scrambled to finish the outline with a shaky hand. His coffee untouched, he couldn’t waste a single moment not painting. He fills the lines with a bright yellow, later he would shade them into a more beige kind of sundial.

2:00
Two minutes is all the time in the world! He told himself, I’ve got this! Nope, wrong tool, not that one either, he wished that he had grown up on Microsoft Paint and not chess. Three blue balls, done. Oh, and the lines to connect the whole thing! Unsure if the colors he chose were even true to the original work, he quickly fashioned straight lines after multiple attempts.

0:30
The background shading! With the white spray can tool, he watched as the solid blue background transformed into a blue monochromatic shaded sunset. With only seconds to spare, he stops and takes in this majestic sundial.

0:00
Completion. He submitted his art.

The goal, he understands now, is to have fun.
For three hundred seconds he wasn’t struggling with the daily family nonsense, and schoolwork wasn’t amassing like a tumor on his spine.
He experienced pure enjoyment.

Now he eagerly awaits the next competition.

Spoiler for Gravy Train Co.:
Brawl 2

Brawl 2 was an exciting time.  Back before the days of fancy secret sections in the forum, we had to rely on a titanpad to communicate with our team.  We didn't have these fancy video game themes, we just had "Brawl" and a picture from the Hunger Games and we liked it.   Also we had to walk 5 miles just to submit each round's task.  Uphill.  In the snow. Both ways.  .  Ahh the challenges, the wagers, the back alley knuckle brawls, I miss those days.
Our team, Team Expensive Clocks (back then the teams were far more tied to the elements) personally had some interesting times.  First off, Opsinis came out of the auction having spent the most points.  We started off round 1 in last place with 14 points.  Team Abstact which started in first came in last though, so I guess that isn't saying much.  Our team had another problem though.  The Earth.  Or rather, the Earth being split up into time zones.  From GMT-8 to GMT+8 we spanned them all, making real time communication rather difficult.  But despite that, Opsinis put a damn good team together.  We all gave input on each other's tasks, even when they were multi-role tasks, and I think we came out stronger for it.  And then halfway through the Brawl, something glorious happened.  n00b had to leave.  Sorry to call you leaving glorious n00b, but you got replaced by andretimpe.  With barely any time left in the round, he subbed in, and made the most hilarious EtG video I had ever seen.  From then on, with his input (and there was lots of it) we started rocketing towards the top.  He even made an awesome video chronicling our team, and played music and sang a song about us.  I'd link it, but the sheer awesomeness of it might prop my submission up unfairly.  We apogeed before we hit the moon and came in second, but it was still glorious.   I mean, in those days, OldTrees was an actual participant we had to try to defeat, not just an expert judge.  ARTHANASIOS was such an expert forum expert that he took over the Brawl.
And the combo tasks!  We weren't in the foxhole with just one other person, we had combo tasks bringing four team members together for one task!  If someone went AWOL on you, they weren't risking a single task, they were risking the majority of the points for that round.  Reinforcements were around the corner for some, but the experience took it's toll.  Many of us were never the same afterwards.
Brawl 3 was exciting, and Brawl 4 is as well, but nothing will ever take 2's place in my elemental heart.

Spoiler for CHALLENGES:

Spoiler for CHALLENGE "A" (Red Stars Vs MoL):
FE Challenge: TheElkSpeaks Vs KirbyLover

Write an article discussing one of the trade-offs involved in the mechanics of Elements.

Spoiler for Red Stars:
Burst vs Sustained Resource Advantages

Elements is fundamentally a game of resources: cards, quanta, HP, and damage are all resources players use.  Each primary resource, however, has a tradeoff in the ways to gain it between a burst form of that resource and a sustained form of that resource.  The burst form of a resource will generally give a player more of that resource at the moment, but the sustained form will give the player more over the long term.

Let's take a look at these resources one by one.  First, we'll look at card draw.  Burst forms of card draw most obviously come through cards like Shard of Bravery and to a leser extent precognition, allowing a player to draw 3 or 1 cards respectively, immediately.  Golden Hourglass or Golden Nymph, on the other hand, provide sustained card advantage, offering a player no draw on the first turn, but an option to draw throughout the game additional cards.

The same concept applies to quanta - especially rainbow quanta.  Burst quanta generation shows up in cards like Immolation, Nova, and Supernova, while Quantum Pillar/Tower provides sustained quanta generation.  For a player who needs to have the quanta this turn, a nova is far more useful, but in just 4 turns, the quantum pillar makes up for itself with its sustained production.  The denial of quanta likewise comes in sustained and burst forms, with devourers providing a sustained denial of quanta and black holes providing a burst denial.  A control player must consider whether their opponent is likely to use sustained or burst quanta, and prepare to deny quanta appropriately.  Black holes rarely work wonders against a mono, and devourers can get overwhelmed in a flood of novae.

Players' health is a resource that unexpectedly comes in burst and sustained forms.  The fact that the starting value is 100 rather than 0 doesn't mean that we can ignore the ways HP is gained.  Cards like Heal, Miracle, Stone Skin, Shard of Divinity and even Holy Light can provide bursts of HP, while cards like Sanctuary, Empathic Bond, and Shard of Gratitude provide a sustained gain of HP.  This fundamental difference in function categorizes their use - Heal is best placed in a fast deck that won't have the turns to make use of Empathic Bond or Shard of Gratitude, but needs a little extra HP to outlast an opponent.

Every resource in the game functions along this tradeoff - a Fire Bolt to the face is clearly burst damage, while an accelerated Titan is sustained damage nearly impossible to remove.  In a direct comparison of creatures, a 12|3 provides more burst damage than a 9|6, but may provide less sustained damage if it is more easily killed.  PC and CC can be burst through Deflagration and Rage Potion, or sustained through Pulverizer and Owl's Eye.  Dimensional Shields are the premier burst shield in the game, while Diamond Shield or a large Hope provide sustained shielding. The relationship between alchemy cards and nymphs follows a similar line, with every advantage that an alchemy card provides a burst form of, the corresponding nymph provides the sustained form, like the Golden Nymph/Precognition pair, already analyzed.

What difference does this dichotomy make to the player?  In a deck built for short games, burst resources are more valuable, but in a deck built for longer games, sustained resources are more valuable.  It is for this reason that 60 card deckout bows such as TotalControlBow and THE DECK are worse off if they run novae and dimensional shields, despite those cards being considered extremely powerful, and yet why novae and deflagrations or steals are core components of every rush-oriented rainbow deck. The primary reason that Heal is generally an unpopular card is that it's a burst form of a resource (HP) that matters more to slower decks than faster ones. Having to acquire a minimum amount of a resource to win a game also favours sustained creation, like fire quanta in firestall or UG decks, where adding Blue Nymphs increases the effectiveness a lot, as the player no longer has to wait to draw all the gases in the deck, he can just create them.

It is often necessary in control decks to mix burst and sustained forms of resources, such as mixing your nymphs for sustained alchemy benefits with the actual alchemy cards for when you need a more immediate form of the effect.  The use of burst resources is difficult to impossible to prevent, whereas sustained resources are more capable of being interacted with.  A player playing against heavy CC and healing can hold creatures and spells in hand to try to burn for the win in a single turn, and a deflagration has immediate effect where a pulverizer can be nullified in its intervening turn.

Many players intuit this tradeoff and build their decks accordingly, but explicitly thinking about which form of a given resource your deck requires is one of the fastest ways to becoming a stronger deckbuilder.

Spoiler for KirbyLover:
Temporary Graveyard
Unlike in a lot of TCGs and CCGs on both the internet and actual games, Elements has an instantaneous graveyard.  This means that instead of cards being saved in the graveyard for the potential of being used later, they are removed entirely. There are both benefits and drawbacks to this, some of which are outlined below.

Pros:
  • Simpler programming
  • Makes Elements more unique by not mimicing a common mechanic in other card games
  • Reduced complexity for any player new to card games

Cons:
  • If you do not see what is played, there is no way to know what you missed
  • Limitation on new card ideas/functions; there cannot be cards that interact with graveyard

There have been ideas that correlate with a long-term graveyard, but it tends to be shot down as it goes against the nature of the game.

However, if a graveyard were to be added to the game, the meta game would be changed greatly. There could be the possiblity of powerful cards being summoned late game or mid-game. OTKs could be benefitted from this. Rushes could be affected too, as a graveyard sacrifice mechanic would allow more Immolation-like deck archetypes to be built.

Spoiler for CHALLENGE "B" (Ragnarok Vs Frostbite):
CD Challenge: Frozengaia Vs AD Storm Bolt

Ulamog, The Infinite Gaia
This challenge consists of three criteria.  (Technically four.)

1) Design a creature card.
2) Design this card using psuedoquanta as a cost.
3) If the unupgraded card uses psuedoquanta, the upgraded must be of one of the 13 classical elements ( :chroma :entropy :death, etc.) If the upgraded card uses pseudoquanta, the unupgraded must be of one of the 13 classical elements.

Pseudoquanta will be defined thusly:

"Pseudoquanta are non-elemental representations of a particular manipulation of elemental quanta, health, or any other variable that can be encountered in the game sufficiently general to be granted a cost status."
(Taken from Here.)

http://elementscommunity.org/forum/design-theory/pseudoquanta/

You may make your own pseudoquanta, but it is not recommended.

An example of a card that uses pseudoquanta can be found here.

An example of a card that has two different elements can be found here.

TEXT:

ART:

IDEA:
Frozengaia
NOTES:
The upgraded uses Mirror Pseudoquanta.
Mirror Pseudoquanta is quanta of your mark - if your mark is fire, it costs 5 fire to play. If time, costs 5 time.
The card is still of the element "other", regardless of what mark you use.

It pays for itself in two turns, and you can bless it for more! Adrenaline it and watch your light/life quanta skyrocket! (For some time)

Upgraded, all colours can use it! And to prevent fractal abuse... Well, fractal isn't excellently amazing, upgraded, and this could make a strange TTK with fractal, which is an interesting use, imo.

Spoiler for Cerberus (late sub, 1/2 points):

Spoiler for CHALLENGE "C" (MoL Vs Frostbite):
CD Challenge: Annele Vs AD Storm Bolt

Design a card that incorporates two elements (either by ability, like werewolf, or effect, like nightfall) that are not yet found on a card together ingame. This card must also have clear synergy with a third element; either with a specific card(s) from this element, or the element as whole.

Spoiler for MoL:
Noble Warrior | Virtuous Warrior

If Warrior targets itself, nothing will happen.
Warrior has clear synergy with Antimatter, a combo with which can make a rather big attacker.

SUPER BONUS TASK !

Spoiler for April - How to build a terrarium:
Howdy folks!

This month we will do something simple - we will build our very own terrariums!

Now now, don't be afraid. It's easy to do even for city folks like you.

First we will need some basic supplies
  • A clear glass or plastic container (glass looks much better) with lid. Can be anything from a jar to a fishtank.
  • Small pebbles
  • Activated charcoal
  • Sphagnum moss
  • Potting soil
  • Plants - small, slow growing ones are preferable
  • Additional decoration
  • Cooled beverage (optional)

Step 1: Preparation
There are a few things we need to make sure of before we start assembling our next piece of living decor.
First of all, the container has to be dry and clean.
It should have no condensation on the inside, and of course it should be free of all dirt or chemicals.

The second thing is that to make sure that the bag of potting soil we will has not been opened yet.
Already opened bags might not be sterile anymore - and we don't want our plants to die on us, do we?

Step 2: Laying the bed

Once the container is ready, we have to lay down the various layers of materials that will be the base of it all.

The first layer will be the pebbles.
Nothing fancy to be done here: just put them in and create a layer of uniform thickness (2'5-5 cm / 1-2").

Upon the pebbles comes the charcoal.
The charcoal serves dual purpose: it filters the water in the tank and provides extra carbon in the soil.
Apply a layer of 2-3 cm / 1-1.5".

Next is the moss.
It enriches the soil and also prevents it from mixing with the charcoal and pebbles (and thus ruining the water).
You will need 2-3 cm / 1-1.5" thick layer.

On top of the moss comes the soil.
The exact soil you need to use depends on the types of plants you will want - you have to use the one for their needs.
Add water to it to make it damp (but not soggy) and put 7-10 cm / 3-4" of it in.

Step 3: Planting

Finally, time to get our thumbs green.

Before we put the plants in their new home, we should make sure that they have similar needs (water, light, soil composition).
If we fail to do that we could get unpleasant surprises later on.

The process should be fairly straightforward: remove the plant from the pot, cut away pot-bound roots and remove excess soil.
Now create a planting hole in the soil and place your green friend in a spot where its leaves will not touch the wall of the container.
Finally firm the soil around the base of the plant.

Repeat for each plant.

Step 4: Finishing touches

We are almost finished.

Time to add the decorative elements like stones, driftwood or even some miniature sculptures if you fancy them.
Once you are satisfied with the arrangement, lightly spray the walls of the container and the foliage with water to clear them of any soil stuck to them.

Place your brand new terrarium in a bright spot (but not in direct sunlight) and let it sit for about a day with the lid on until the leaves and walls dry.
Then take of the lid and check the soil.
If it is soggy, leave the lid off to let extra water evaporate. once it's only slightly damp replace the lid, sit back and enjoy!
(If you chose to have that cooled beverage, now is the time to drink it)

Tune in next month, when we will learn how to take good care of orchids!

Spoiler for Giant Annele:
I: Which starting deck did you choose, and do you still associate yourself with it?
A: The very first starting deck I chose was aether, but the starting deck of my main account, when I actually started grinding and stuff, was fire. I don’t really associate myself with either of them anymore – darkness all the way, baby!
I: What do you find so appealing about darkness?
A: Darkness has everything. It has PC, CC, hard-hitters, mid-hitters, damage protection, and healing. I can make a mono darkness deck that doesn’t leave anything out. It’s almost like a tribute to my first couple decks, which were 60-card awful rainbows (that didn’t even use QP). I like having all options available to me. It also has the best weapon and shield in the game.

Fair Warning: This deck is not easy to build due to upgrades and ultra-rare quantities.

BLACK is a denial deck. If you cannot deny you are unlikely to win.
Similar to Pestal and Disc-hole in this regard, BLACK differs in its ability to compete with both rainbow and mono/duo decks.

Any deck that has FIVE of any nymph is difficult for many players to build.
The Amber Nymphs are priority against many-color decks and Pests are priority against mono and duos.

The win condition is heavily reliant on lock-down and slowly killing the opponent.
The maximum damage per turn potential is low but with lock-down and SoV in action the inevitable is inevitable.

ENJOY!

Leagues will be finished, hopefully we can get a short interview with winners.

  • With an amazing score of 1609, Puff has won his first Battle League! Here's what he had to say about his BL journey:
    Spoiler for Hidden:
When I first heard about BL, I was very interested in participating. So I registered on the forums, jumped right into chat and asked about when it starts. It turns out that the next season is starting in a few days, which was perfect. Barely knowing anything about the PVP meta, I started digging around the forums for info: rush dom stall break, commonly used BL decks, previous top tier decks, and the counters for them.

And then BL started. I was surprised myself that I was able to get a good start, but I guess that meant that spamming DBH er, researching all those decks paid off. So I kept on collecting more decks for use. And I kept noting what the other participants do: what decks they use, when they use them, and how they respond to what deck I bring. It was exciting, all those panicking every time I see a new deck that I've never encountered before, digging around for info, and building or selecting counters for them. My decklist grew to like 25+ decks for BL. Interestingly, the top tier decks: grabbow, the deck, monofire, firestall, disquake - they all weren't in my top 5 used decks in BL. Okay, maybe Firestall. But still, I felt that if I also spammed those decks, I'd just end up in RPS / mirror matches and only win 50% of the time. And that's not enough, right?

In the end, I was very satisfied at my performance. And I was able to pick up a lot of experience from the league, too. Hopefully I'll be able to participate in more events, and I would gladly do BL again if I still have the time.
Enjoy your mark/nymph and hope to see you in coming seasons!

  • With a score of 1554, worldwideweb3 has won his first championship league! Here's what he had to say on his league journey in CL and BL:
    Spoiler for Hidden:
This was an amazing season for me, #1 BL and CL. This season, I tried a couple different decks in BL like, water/light stall and aether/light stall. Both worked better than expected! In CL, even though there weren't a lot of players, the matches I had were interesting. Comparing it to BL, the meta is pretty much the same, a lot of rainbows and a couple rol/hopes and dbh's from time to time. I started CL not so well, just like BL, but then I managed to get a few wins against noize and that pretty much changed it all. I will soon post decks used, if anyone's interested, but expect to find the normal decks within them. Hopefully, there will be more people joining CL next season.
Grats on another impressive pvp performance!

  • The next league season is rumored to begin towards the end of April. Be sure to join that!

  • Elements Mafia 47, hosted by skyironsword, is underway. It seems eljoemo's caught red-handed, but he got away with it! Sneaky guy.

  • Elements Tag! by eaglgenes101, is underway. Kuroaitou is it! Linkcat still retains the lead, although russianspy1234 is catching up. Meanwhile, qwerter and flyingcat are at the brink of death!

  • Due to lack of forum games, we have an idea of our own!

    Spoiler for Hidden:
    FORUM PICTIONARY!

Well, the goal of the game is simply to guess the picture(like every other pictionary).
But here's the catch, instead of drawing the picture(a lot of hassle, you know), the picture will take on myriad shapes, either:
    • Blurry
    • Panelized
    • Random crops all over the place
It can go on varying degrees, perhaps completely deforming the picture itself (but we'll sure to leave a tint of it's... originality).

With the help of photo-editing software, we can easily reform the picture back to itself, thus the game can have modifiable intervals!

Plus, anyone can join!. Who knows? Maybe it only takes one guess to reach the dazzling forum games hall of fame!

So, anyone up for a forum game?

Here's a picture, it will be quite easy(because too lazy to tinker with the image):

Tea Time with Giants:Lava Golem

After years of hearing the stories of veteran heroes of the Elementalists, our reporter, Jonathancrazyj decides that for the sake of balance and objectivity, we should hear from the other side of the battlefield.

JCJ: First off, thanks so much for meeting with me. Do you have a name, Mr. Golem, sir?

Golem: Golem.

JCJ: Right. Can I offer you a beverage? An adrenaline perhaps? A cheeky Rage Potion?

Golem: Gemfinder. Upgraded.

JCJ: Lovely. Now, my first question is an easy one. Who do you prefer playing for - Hermes, the False God, or the Elementalists?

Golem: Don't care. Just like quanta and smashing. Good Gemfinder this - pass me that Rage Potion.

JCJ: Unbiased, I think a lot of our audience will like that about you, shows an almost philosophical wish to unify the world - not taking sides. Excellent. Now, let's get personal here - when you first enter a battlefield, do you feel vulnerable?

Golem: I always get to smash at least once. Got any Quintessence?

JCJ: Inspiring! It shows such courage to know that you feel no trepidation in approaching your work with such initial weakness, so long as you can - as you so eloquently put it - "smush"

Golem: SMASH. Not smush, don't missquote me. And that Quint got stuck in my teeth - give me a toothpick - that Shard of Wisdom will do.

JCJ: Sorry. Right... now one last question. And it's really important to our readers we get an honest and heartfelt answer. What are your plans for the future? Do you think the meta is likely to change at all, and if so, will your impact be quite the same as it was in the hay day of Napalm Grenade, and before that, CCYB?

Golem: FOOLISH MORTAL! LEAVE NOW! I WILL FOREVER MASTER THE META! I AM INVULNERABLE, EVER GROWING AND SPELL DAMAGE WIELDING! TIME TO SMASH!!!

JCJ: I feel it is time to end this interview. Pass the reflective shield please Christopaz.

Think rng is on your side today? Try this! A fun and very enjoyable deck, made by MoL's DB in a brawl task where decks had to be made around a horror movie. Play the quanta, play skeleton and use eternity's ability on them. Use fractal to get more skeletons, to create different creatures. Keep skeleton in hand if cc is expected, and play it with fractal.

Death and Time pends: For skeletons and eternity respectively. The no. of pends is absolutely spot on, as i found in my testing.

Fractal: More skeletons -> More different creatures!

Elite Skeleton: The only creature. When used with eternity, it can be really good.

Eternity: Using its ability on skellies to create powerful (hopefully) creatures. Also useful for draw-locking opponent.

Card Idea of the Month: Magitek Factory by Ragnarok

Magitek Factory | Magitek Factory
Have you ever felt that Gravity was lacking a nice buff card other than the classic Momentum? After all, what if you want to buff Sapphire Chargers? A bit redundant, right?

Now, meet the Magitek Factory. This permanent is like a reusable Chaos Power that instead has set stats that it buffs. Just like the sides of a die, it gives +1|+6, +2|+5, +3|+4, etc. on each use, with the final use being +6|+1. After that, it will be destroyed.

This synergizes well with a multitude of cards. First of all, this can work very well in a mono Gravity deck. Use the first few buffs on creatures like Armagio to mainly buff HP for Gravity Pull, and then use the last few for offensive creatures like Sapphire Chargers to boost the amount of damage you can do. Otyughs would work wonderfully here, because of its ability Devour. Another synergy is with Gravity Shield. Continually using the buffs on enemy creatures will make them eventually unable to reach you no matter how high their attack is.

In duos, this has an even bigger repertoire of synergies. One would be with Deathstalkers and Dune Scorpions. Because you can continually use the Magitek Factory for six different creatures, you can just fit a few of these into a Death or Time deck and not have to waste space for six copies of a buff card (like Momentum). It also works well with Sparks and Phase Salvagers because it allows you to have a cheap, quick attacker relatively early in the game.

This card has many more synergies, we'll just have to wait for it to get in the game and see! ;)

Puzzle of the Month

SLITHER LINK
also known as Loop the Loop [and various other names]

Spoiler for EASY VERSION:
Spoiler for DIFFICULT VERSION:
Spoiler for General Directions:
The number in the square indicate the number of lines it is surrounded. So for example, a 4 will indicate that it is completely
surrounded by lines, while 1 will only have 1 line. 0 means it has NO lines, take note of that. Blank spaces have varying number of lines.

The goal is to make a loop, only one loop is to be created.

Spoiler for SOLVED PUZZLE:
That should how a solved puzzle will look like (colors not necessary).
Spoiler for Tips on Solving:
There are MANY patterns that could help you out in solving slither link puzzles. When you see these kinds of patterns, DRAW THEM LINES QUICK!

If two 3s are adjacent diagonally, the edges which do not run into the common point must be filled in.

Similarly, if two 3s are in the same diagonal, but separated by any number of 2s (and only 2s) the outside edges of the 3s must be filled in, just as if they were adjacent diagonally.

If a 1 is in a corner, the actual corner's lines may be X'd out, because a line that entered said corner could not leave it except by passing by the 1 again. This also applies if two lines leading into the 1-box at the same corner are X'd out.

If a 3 is in a corner, the two outside edges of that box can be filled in because otherwise the rule above would have to be broken.

If a 2 is in a corner, two lines must be going away from the 2 at the border.

If a 3 is adjacent to a 0, either horizontally or vertically, then all edges of that 3 can be filled except for the one touching the 0. In addition, the two lines perpendicular to the adjacent boxes can be filled.

If two 3s are adjacent to each other horizontally or vertically, their common edge must be filled in, because the only other option is a closed oval that is impossible to connect to any other line. Second, the two outer lines of the group (parallel to the common line) must be filled in. Thirdly, the line through the 3s will always wrap around in an "S" shape. Therefore, the line between the 3s cannot continue in a straight line, and those sides which are in a straight line from the middle line can be X'd out.

If a 3 is adjacent to a 0 diagonally, both sides of the 3 that meet the 0's corner must be filled. This is because if either of those sides were open, the line ending in the corner of the 0 would have no place to go. This is similar to the 3-in-a-corner rule.

If a line reaches a corner of a 3, there must be lines on both sides of the 3 that said corner is not adjacent to, because if the 3's sole empty space were not adjacent to it, the corner would have three lines connected to it. Furthermore, the segment leading away from the 3 at the corner reached by the line must be empty; if it were filled, neither of the remaining 2 undetermined sides of the 3 would be able to contain a line.

There are many more patterns, but the first five are enough to give you a head start.

Countdown for giving answers The countdown has concluded.

Spoiler for Card Idea of the Month:

  • Heir of the False Gods is down to its final 4! Round 10 is underway, as Zawadx has managed a commanding win over Zso_Zso. In the remaining match, mrpaper competes with Regyptic to secure his lead. Will mrpaper win and get the event to reach its finals, or will Regy reign supreme over the current leader and drag the event on?

  • 12 Lives is underway, with players constantly shifting their positions with the deviation of matches. It's still anybody's game as they battle to preserve their marks, and hopefully, acquire a shiny one at the end.

SoBra Silence is an extremely deadly rush that practically means your opponent only starts the game with 50 HP.
It is an incredibly simple deck, but I will break its cards and strategy down:

Use aether pillars to generate quanta, fast. Then, use phase spiders and psions, backing them up with a giant silence chain. Use Shard of Bravery to get more silences when needed. Due to how much quanta you need at an alarming rate, shard of wisdoms replace some actual creatures to deal more damage quickly.

Usually, when the enemy gets out of thier silence chain, they play most of thier hand. Use this opportunity to chain Shard of Braveries and finish them off.
Just make sure you always prioritize silence over playing creatures or wisdom once your chain starts. Even if you shave only 30 HP off, you want the chain to last as long as possible.

This deck is quite fun, and like any deck using braveries, extremely fast. It's not rare to make an enemy lose before your silence chain is finished. But it is extremely dependant on the draw, and thus quite luck-based. There is very little skill involved, and that can offset some people. Not me, though. If my heart wasn't stolen by SoW reflect, this would be the deck I would obsess over.

Mark of the Prey | Mark of the Prey

There are many things I dislike when it comes to the life element. I believe it is an incomplete element, with a handful of interesting cards that make an undeveloped strategy. Which is rather unfortunate.

When I first stumbled on this card, I disliked it at first - it's an aggressive representation of life, which I despise. But I've grown to love this card whole-heartedly.

It takes two ideas - Giving items to the opponent, and negativeDR shields - and combines them into a very flavourful and powerful card. This solves many annoyances life has to deal with - the dreaded Dimensional Shield is always an issue, but sanctuary and the like is much more easier to overcome. This card benefits more the more creatures you have, and that makes it thematic to the life element.

There are obvious synergies with this card - adrenaline and aflatoxin are the obvious ones, as well as fractal. But don't underestimate some more subtle aspects. Whilst it's not properly written on the card, Puff, bless him, is soon changing this card's wording to allow creatures with 0 HP to attack. This allows deathstalker to become a worrisome beast - adrenalining a 0 ATK creature makes it attack five times - so that's either two or three doses of deadly poison for the deathstalker!

Dune scorpion will bolster the underrated time/life duo with this card. Boneyard might become a threat, as well. But the most interesting combination, in my opinion, is what happens when you combine it with vampires - adrenavamps is an interesting strategy, and is one I will gladly recommend even more should this shield be added to the game.

All things considered, this is a very elegant, and simple card, and one I would gratefully add to the game.
Why couldn't this have been bunchie themed so the new bunchie expansion could've added it in?

Puzzle of the Month

Elements Word Search

This time, we're keeping it extremely simple. Simply make all the words you can with at least three letters each, from the following creature names:

  • Abyss Crawler
  • Phase Recluse
  • Schrodinger's Cat

You may only use the letters from a single name for each word. There is no fixed solution. Simply name as many words as you can!

Also, you have to find the largest word which may be constructed from ALL of these names individually, and send it to me! Piece of cake!

If you solve this puzzle and send the answers via pm to Zawadx by the deadline, your name will be listed in my heart!

The countdown has concluded.

SUPER BONUS TASK !

Spoiler for Red Stars:
BRAWL #4 COMES TO ITS END!

  • Some wagers have happened early this Brawl and are already shaking the standings
  • In round 1 Frostbite Borealis snatched 15 points from Meaning of Life, after a wager sent by MoL's writer ji412jo vs jonathancrazyj
  • In round 2 ji412jo had better luck and beat Gravy Train's flyingcat in a challenge, stealing 8 points and gaining an extra point because of the Event Card
  • In round 3 jonathancrazyj and flyingcat tied in 12 points wager. Even though it didn't led to any change in the scores, this wager had dire consequences for our cat ;)
  • Treldon took 8 points from Frostbite's artmies in a challenge
  • 3 more challenges and who know how many wagers are still going on, with results not yet revealed, so the game is far from over.
  • All competitions were on hold because of Brawl, so be ready for new exciting things coming your way
  • Heir of the False Gods is down to the final four players, and mrpaper has a commanding lead.  Can anyone chase him down?
  • 12 Lives has completed two rounds and rob77dp leads the pack with 10 lives remaining.  Will the Master of Death keep the most lives?
  • The PVP World Championship is down to its final four.  Will deuce22 add yet another title to his impressive list, or will worldwideweb3, Zawadx, or theelkspeaks stop him?

  • The Forgotten Cards (4th april) was won by rise4toast, his first win!
  • Fellow NL writter, Krzyekxd won his second tourney, Potluck Rules (11th april)

  • Elements Mafia 47, hosted by skyironsword, is underway with an Ace Attorney theme.  Good luck to all!
  • Elements Tag  keeps eliminating players, but Linkcat has continually built up his store of points.  Will he outlast the pack?

Tea Time with the Bosses:Vangelios

Bringing on the heat!

Spoiler for Interview:

Where does your username come from. What does it mean?
It's based on a biblical name, Arcângelo (Archagel) and Vangelis which is cool name from a greek musician. Putting them together, Vangelios is a greek name, that means to me "the one bringing good news", or "the one bringing hope".

How did you discover this game? How long have you been playing?
I used to play card games like Spellfire and MTG, but had stopped. I also wanted to play online against people, so a friend suggested EtG and I liked the mechanics. I have been playing since 05/2012.

I suppose that :fire is your favorite element. Do you think it suits you? What is your favorite fire deck?
Yes, fire is my favorite. I think it suits me because fire can be at the same time fascinating and very important to everyone. My favorit deck is immo-Novix:

What was your best moment (either in the community or in the game)?
Winning my first Battle League was a great feeling. It seemed like a dream ...

How is the life as "Master of Fire", representing your element?
Polemical because of my decision of not leading Team Fire on War. I personally don't feel myself mess of a master because of that, but many people have accused me of being a coward, or called me the worse master fire ever had, while others say that it would have been much easier to beat fire had I been the general. So my term as a master has been controversial because of that decision, but I don't regret it, after all fire won because I made the right choice :D . On the other hand I have the respect of many players, specially in Battle League, as I use fire there a lot, not just one or two decks. To sum up I am the master of fire because I know how to play with fire.

Who were the people you looked up to when you were starting in the community?
PvP-wise, Odii Odsen, Cheesy, Regen, Vineroz and Majofa. On the rest of the forum, Oldtrees and Odin for their feedbacks on my cards and on chat Jenkar and Higurashi

Your avatar seems to depict always the same character
Yes, Vangelios has always been a RPG character with that general look.

What are your goals in the game at the moment?
Defending my master title, maybe showing up to play War 10 (just because it is #10 :P) and playing leagues and see what happens, as they are great fun (as amazing as it sounds I have always played leagues for fun, even if I try to win fun comes first ;) )

You always had strong results in leagues, but mostly on Battle League. Do you have a preference for the meta with no upgrades?
Being competitive is nice, but it is not everything. On the beggining I didn't played CL because I didn't had enough upgrades and we couldn't play on both back then. I also prefered BL because it has more players, I remember Odii winning a CL with only 5 active players, that was sad. Now I don't have the focus to play on 2 leagues at the same time and some vets avoid playing against me in CL (which is understandable, after all it's hard to beat me :P ), which is one of the reasons why I admire Cheesy and demesne as they are always up for a match. But if CL gets more active players I'll certainly show up.

You gave the leadership of team fire to RootRanger in War and they ended up winning. Do you think you could have reached such a good result leading the team? :fire winning will increase the competition for the title in the next Trials?
As I said before, I don't regret it and am deeply grateful to RootRanger. I'm very happy to see Root winning with fire and I was and still am annoyed by the rules of War. It is not a balanced event, with huge flaws (and lets not dwell on the more sinister details of what may have happened or not on War 8). If I could do well? If I feel confidence on the competition, the answer is a loud yes. Of course, the competition for the next trials will be rekindled for sure, but I never had easy victories here, I'm always prepared for the hardest I expect.

Besides Elements, what other games you like?
Fighting, racing and strategy (like the old "Age of Mythology") games, chess and once in a while, action games and shooters.

How has the experience as a boss been?
I need to confess I haven't done much. I mostly talk with timpa about some points I think are important. I could help with card design and deckbuilding, but the team has competent people on these areas. About writer, Off-topic and Forum Expert, of course I'm no good, but I believe many people would have difficulties on these 3 areas.

What was your favorite PvP event?
If you don't count BL, it would have to be Three-man Team PvP.

What would you change in the game?
Lol, a lot of things like nerfs and buffs. I'd make quests for 100k score, 500k and lv 80 (1000k). On lv 80 we could choose a special card (that you couldn't obtain anywhere else). Some kind of epic card, but not too OP, something like Legendary Red Dragon, 12 :fire with 18|6 stats and every 2 turns it could use a fire breath to deal 10 damage to a target :P , of course each element would have a card on this style and you would have to choose only 1 (no copies and if you up it there's no going back)

Your problems with english are well known, do you feel like people have trouble understanding you?
One of the things ETG helps me with is certainly English. It has helped me a lot and in a fun way. Yes, some people avoid talking to me because of it, but that depends on the person, for example, Regen could understand what I sid and helped me to improve too.

Anything else you want to say?
Zanza come baaaaaaaack.....
I have had some unplesant moments, like in Trials 7, with some people calling me a cheater and some people that don't like because of one reason or another, but the positive experiences more than make up for it ;) . There's always someone nice to talk to, even to give you some incentive. If it weren't for Blacksmith and Spike I would have never got to be a master. They were the ones that convinced me to go back to trials. There's much more valuable things in here than just PvP 8)

So long, and all the best

BALLTOSIS by majofa

This deck review was written by majofa

No one that has any grasp of this game would think about using mitosis on 0 HP creatures, right? (sorry AI)
Heavy Armor is normally used with Otys or creatures that you want to make more CC resistant, right?

Nova - To accelerate the deck and to allow the playing of Heavy Armor.

Condor - These grow everytime a Ball Lightning dies.

Bone Wall - See Condors ^-^

Soul Catcher - Provides quanta for the Condors, fueled by the dying Ball Lightnings.

Heavy Armor - Keeps the Ball Lightnings alive so they can spawn more!

Mitosis - You need more than 6 Ball Lightnings, this will help. Can also be used on Condors.

Ball Lightning - They die... or spawn more, use them how you'd like.

This is a ramp deck revolving around the following combos:
Ball Lightning + Heavy Armor = 5|6 for 1 :earth
5|6 Ball Lightning + mitosis = effective 10|6 + 1 death effect every turn. You'll also always have a ball to play another armor on it when you can.

Death effects are used with Soul Catchers to accumulate  :death quanta to play Condors and Bone Walls, after which the death effects provide both ramp damage and stall for your deck.

It's crazy, funny to play and can even beat AI3!

Kiwi | Kiwi by Team Meaning Of Life
This card review was written by eljoemo.

This card is my current favourite from Brawl #4 so far (up to Round 5), excluding the ones I made because of personal bias. Granted, my opinions on card design might differ from a lot of other designers around here, but I'm going to do my best to explain why I like this card. (This might get a little long-winded)...

Kiwi adds a dimension to stalling with Life which the element typically doesn't have access to. To elaborate, there are 3 different types of stalling that I can see in EtG. Type 1 is CC/PC; if you can kill all their creatures/permanents then you can stop your opponent from dealing any damage. This is something Life has very little access to. Type 2 is Healing; if you heal back all the damage that your opponent does to you then they won't be able to get anywhere. Life focuses heavily on this aspect, and is well known for it. Type 3 is damage prevention; which means stopping the damage without necessarily affecting the creatures (or permanents) causing it. This side to stalling is seen most commonly in shields, and in Sundial, BB and Squids as well.

If you're still with me, I'm going to ramble on about this a bit more. The best stalls come from combining these dimensions of stalling together in one deck. If you try to make a mono-light stall, or a mono-fire stall, or even a mono-aether stall, then you'll find it won't do too well because each only focuses on one type of stalling (healing, CC/PC and damage prevention respectively). The most effective stalls come from combining more than one type in one deck. Take Firestall for example, believed by some to be the most powerful deck in the game. Firestall combines the CC of fire with healing of Light to make an extremely powerful stall deck. If you throw in Sundials, then you can cover all 3 bases and have the potential to win War #8 with a single deck (if you believe what they say). Basically, the more ways to stall you have, the better you'll be able to stall.

That's where Kiwi comes in. Kiwi is clearly a Type 3 stall card, going from what we have above, which Life has no access to at the moment. By combining the damage prevention of Kiwi with the healing of all the other Life cards, you have a monster stall on your hands. In a mono life stall, a free turn of damage to heal yourself up to full health, or just a substantial amount, can really be a life saver (no pun intended). Kiwi is the only card that I personally can remember seeing (and certainly in this Brawl) that is a stalling card for Life which doesn't use healing, and I really like that.

If you need me to spell out some combos, imagine Kiwis with adrenastaves, or Kiwi-tosis with Empathetic Bonds, it would be a very powerful stall deck. If you want to take it out of a mono, the stall is strong enough that you can bring in some Earth quanta and run Stone Skins, like a Life-based immortal. Or bring back the old Fire-Life stalls. Or couple it with Water for its CC and synergy with Forest Spirits for damage.

Of course this card is fundamentally OP as hell. On its own, it's a 4-turn dim shield. Use Shard of Patience and your damage increases while your opponent just sits and watch. Combine it with Purify and Quint and you've got an infinite Dim shield that can't be touched. Yes it will start start healing the opponent eventually (I assume), but that's not hard to out damage, and it doesn't matter if you're running a deckout strategy. If you're looking for my ideas for a suitable nerf, delaying this card for 1 turn would work, it means you'd need 2 Kiwis for complete blockage. Or you could find a way to make the cost / stat reduction get more severe as you use it more often. But this isn't my card, so it isn't for me to say.

So to sum up, Kiwi adds a new dimension of stalling to Life which can really push how good a life stall can be. The balance might be tipping the scales a little bit too much, but concepts are more important than balance in Brawl, for me at least. I would definitely like to see this one polished up after the end of Brawl and submitted to the Crucible.

Brawl Nonogram Puzzle

We prepared a special nonogram to comemorate the end of Brawl.

To those who don't know what it is, a nonogram is a puzzle where a hidden black and white image is codified with numbers along the borders. The number sequences on the lines (to the left) tell you how many black squares in a row you have on that line, with an unspecified number of white squares. So 1-5-2 means:

(consecutive white blocks - at least 0) (1 black block) (consecutive white blocks - at least 1) (5 consecutive black blocks) (consecutive white blocks - at least 1) (2 consecutive black blocks) (consecutive white blocks - at least 0).

The same thing happens with columns (the number sequences on the top). More details, as well as solution techniques can be found on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonogram

Remember to solve this puzzle by the voting deadline, as the answer will be posted once it ends :).
