Surely you have to have a favorite or one you have read more than the others?

My favorite "book" is the series (5 Books) of "The Banned and the Banisched" by James Clemens.
Heck of an awesome story! Read it a bunch of years ago when I was in Ireland and started to re-read it a week ago. Yep, defenitely worth it!

Also, for everyone who can understand german: pretty much anything from Wolfgang Hohlbein is awesome!
Two series that need to be read are: "Die Chronik der Unsterblichen" and "Der Hexer von Salem"

Ten posts and not one mention of Tolkien?  I'll cover that, I guess.  Beyond LotR, some of his other stories are great too.  Ever read Farmer Giles of Ham?

I am also a fan of Walter Wangerin Jr.  The Book of the Dun Cow and The Book of Sorrows are two of the best books I have ever read.  Most people I talk to haven't heard of them; if you haven't, you need to check them out.

Second page already and no mention of Pratchett?

(That's Terry Pratchett, for you un-knowledgeable people. Get it while it's fresh, the great man is sick :( )

Of course, even fanatics like me are forced to admit occasionally that more authors than just TP exist. I tend to go towards the classics, or at least the most known ones.

There are some pretty interesting names in here though, to specify I will definitely check out Walter Wangerin, and perhaps Robert Jordan (??). Probably going to observe SG's response and react accordingly on that one.

I'm going to read this.

It is a great series, I would also recommend The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks.

Robert Jordan was indeed amazing. While Wheel of Time was very fascinating (and vast), my favourite is actually his rendition of Conan the Destroyer. It's so classic, and still beautiful and touching with a hint of comedy.

Another favourite Fantasy writer of mine is Michael Moorcock. He's one of those inhumanly productive types, and the main author that got me into Dark Fantasy, which has been my favourite genre for years now. He uses lots of old English, which I love, and portrays his characters in a very credible, human way, psychologically speaking. His style isn't all that much High Fantasy either, which I enjoy; I prefer a bit of Low Fantasy. I really loved his collection of books on Dorian Hawkmoon (known simply as Hawkmoon), one of the Eternal Champions. Corum, Prince in the Scarlet Robe, is even darker and almost like reading an incredibly long nightmare a lot of the time.

Robert Jordan had some amazingly interesting and creative ideas, but I felt his books rambled a bit and were full of unnecessary filler. Michael Moorcock is pretty cool.

I'm a big fan of Neil Gaiman, especially his Sandman comic book series.

For all the fantasy I've read I can't recall any of the books I've read. :p. Um I like Jack L. Chalker. He writes really fun adventures. Orson Scott Card, well known for Ender's game, ha written a lot of great fantasy. Next to my compy is Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clark. Good book, though the pacing is a little awkward.

Oh, man.  There are so many! Top, three though:

The First and Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever by Stephen R. Donaldson
The Death Gate Cycle by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman
The Apprentice/Adept Series by Piers Anthony

DO NOT READ: The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. The first book is awesome and sucks you in, and then the entire series turns to a handbasket full of dog crap starting in book 3 and never recovers. It's the worst disappointment in modern fantasy.

Sci-fi:
Earth by David Brinn  (probably my single favorite fiction book of all time.)
Steel Beach by John Varley
The Gap Cycle by Stephen R. Donaldson again (yeah, he's a badass.)

The Apprentice/Adept Series by Piers Anthony
Oh god I love that series so much but oh man its pretty raunchy sometimes. Piers Anthony gets a lot of flak but he writes some great stuff. While we're on the subject of guilty pleasures my absolute favourite has got to be the Spellsinger series by Alan Dean Foster with the Myth series by Robert Asprin as a close second. So bad but I love it.

Scifi:
The Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons
Santiago by Mike Resnick. Or any of his space cowboy kind of books.
Four Lords of the Diamond by Jack L. Chalker
Forever War by Joe Haldeman
Gateway by Frederick Pohl
Old Man's War by John Scalzi
Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card
Home series by Orson Scott Card
Caves of Steel by Isaac Asimov

Heralds of Valdemar Series by Mercedes Lackey
Orion Series by Ben Bova (has to be a series I've found 2 books now, looking for the rest... I found the first one in an Ikea)
Nightfall, Isaac Asimov
The Silvermerillion was pretty epic, but a good read.

Hope I give people some reading ideas...

1. A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin (hence the name...)
2. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
3. The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss
4. The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan (and Brandon Sanderson)
5. Codex Alera by Jim Butcher

And I could go about 10-15 more deep if you really want to get into it...

Has the Wheel of time series finally finished? I did start reading it a good few years back, back in the 1990's I think but somewhere along the line stopped following it.From what I recall it was a good well written series though.

There will be one more book.  After Robert Jordan died, Brandon Sanderson took over and signed on to do the final three.  Two of them have been written and published so far.  I've read the entire series except the 2nd Sanderson one; the whole thing is very good, and Sandserson did a good job both in writing in general and in imitating Jordan's style.  Even if RJ wrote most of it before he died (I think RJ wrote about half himself? Not sure) Sanderson still managed to do an excellent job on the parts that were his own.

Really love the night angel trilogy. Brent weeks manages to include a lot of characters and make every one of them epic.
Also the Dresden files from Jim Butcher. short reads, but good story and absolutely hilarious.
Ender's game and the 3 books after that, after those ones it just got too complicated for me
And finally Legends of the Dragonrealms by Knaak. not as good a quality as others, but amazing story and he has written SO MUCH OMG :o

Ender's Game is scifi :p  It's awesome.  Orson Scott Card has done some fantasy as well, but he's much better at scifi.  His fantasy is still good, though.

The Black Magician Trilogy by Trudi Canavan. I've heard much about the Wheel of Time series.
Someday I'm going to read it. But first I've got to finish the Sword of Truth series.

Trudi Canavan is interesting. but i always feel like her stories are missing something, they have great concepts but im not sure they live up to their full potential. I thought the age of five trilogy was really interesting.

it basically revolves around a fight between immortal sorcerers called "wilds" and gods (who are beings of pure magic). Its been a while since ive read it but what I remember was loving the background to each of the immortals and what powers they had that allowed them to be immortal, and then looking at the main character and thinking her powers where kindof indistinct and under developed. Id give it like a 7 I think. If you liked the black magician trilogy youll probably find age of five to be a good read as well.

I developed a taste for her style of writing. The age of five trilogy was also great. I liked the mechanisms of magic there.

The sequel series even more (I did only read the first one). I don't know if the whole sequel series is released till now.

Brandon Sanderson! *swoon* My favorite is The Way of Kings, but Elantris, Warbreaker, and The Mistborn trilogy + The Alloy of Law are all amazing too!

I can't quite get through The Wheel of Time series. They're vastly overrated in my opinion. I got through the first two books, and I will probably force myself to read all of them just because I'm a huge Brandon Sanderson fan and want to read all his books. The biggest problem I have with them is 1. They're overly predictable. and 2. All the main characters are whiny brats.

Before my Brandon Sanderson obsession, my favorite book series was the Knights of the Round Table stuff by Gerald Morris--my favorite book surprisingly being book 4, Parsifal's Page.

No mention of the Bartimaeus trilogy + the prequel by Jonathan Stroud? I swear, they must have only been popular at my school or something. The main character Bartimaeus is hilarious, and I think this book series is the perfect mix of humor and darkness that's really hard to duplicate. I think even the author has failed to comprehend and duplicate the brilliance of the character Bartimaeus, which is why he then wrote a prequel that doesn't entirely make sense but still amazing, while his other books are dull and drags on and on.

I just recently read Mortal Coils and the sequel All that Lives Must Die. As you can imagine, they're pretty dark and it's a book series that really questions what's right and what's wrong. Is duty more important or is warmth and caring? Do you kill one to save another? Do you kill many to save your loved one? Do you let someone die for the good of all? All the characters are really realistic, sometimes so complex and multifaceted that they feel...hyper real.

For something lighter, I love the Erec Rex series by Kaza Kingsley. I personally like this series better than Harry Potter because the characters are slightly more flawed and the tone stays consistent throughout the different books.

Lord of the Rings is likely my favorite series of books I've ever read. Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson is amazing, and while I can't personally vouch for his other books yet, I look forward to more of his writing. C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia were a childhood favorite as well.

Just quoting one would be too hard for I have several ; I'm very fond of fantasy novels you know...
So...
Moorcock - Legend of Hawkmoon
I enjoyed a lot how the author melts imagination with some reality

Weis & Hickman - The Soulforge (part of Dragonlance saga)
Can't really explain why I enjoyed this one but it did enthral me when I was reading

Williams - Otherland
The plot around a parallel virtual world particularly fascinated me
