Title: Alfred Bester
Post by: gumbeh on October 02, 2011, 01:15:47 pm
...writes things that you should read. The insane mantras that drive his characters are fondly remembered afterwards, like a cherished gift that you hold in your hands to remind you of a friend or loved one.

Quote
Gully Foyle is my name
And Terra is my nation.
Deep space is my dwelling place,
The stars my destination.
I occasionally find myself playing "Tenser, said the Tensor" or "Cats on the Rooftops" in my mind, even though I read The Demolished Man and Psychoshop back in middle school. I'm sure I'll be replaying prose and scenes from The Stars My Destination for the next several decades even if I don't read it again.

Has anyone else read Bester? Did it make you go "whoa"? Did you feel that The Stars My Destination and The Demolished Man were too similar, or that one was derivative of the other? Also, for all the love I have for his books, I'm still trying to decide whether the role women play in them is a fair one considering the times they were written in.
